Re: Garage Refurb

You're running a conduit just for internet? Why not go wireless? You can even get a wireless repeater (bridge) if your current wireless is too far from that end of the house.

I have wireless right now but it seems to slow. :dunno: I'll have less than $100 in this project, so it's going to be attempted. Once it's done, I'd be more likely to stream Pandora while I'm out there too.

The wife saw the trench this morning and rolled her eyes. :spit:

I have read several of your posts since I signed on. I finally took 3 days to read from the start. All I can say is outstanding! A great eye for detail and
the ability to make it look first class. Congratulations.

Re: Garage Refurb

I started today by opening the garage wall up. I pulled out the insulation, which I never stapled in, and tried not to touch it too much.

I measured for the hole to run the conduit and LB and put a hole saw in the drill.
After it was open, I glued up some conduit, the LB, along with a 90°, placed it under the sidewalk and into the wall.

I guess I should have taken a picture of the tunnel under the sidewalk that I dug out.

Re: Garage Refurb

It's hard to tell but I believe the sidewalk is 48" wide. It took a bit to get it tunneled under and conduit run underneath.

Then I got this idea. . . . If the conduit was the same color as the siding, would it blend in more and not stand out as much ? So I broke out the SEM Plastic prep and spray paint.

and laid it on. . . .

Re: Garage Refurb

Once the conduit was run outside, I used an LB to turn it upwards inside the garage walls. This will get covered back up with insulation and sheathed over.

The first LB and connection had dried enough to attach it through the wall of my garage. Then I run the rest of the conduit in the trench.

Re: Garage Refurb

Since I already had the conduit through the garage wall, I had to mask it off in order to paint it. While it's not a perfect match for the paint, I think it'll be alright to help it blend it.

Next, I pulled the wire across the garage and through the conduit. I need to finish running it through the garage attic but that is for another day. I mixed up some Quikrete and filled in the hole that I made for the conduit.

All that was left for the night was fill in the trench. The neighbor has my tamper so hopefully I can get it back tomorrow and tamp it down. I went ahead and put some grass seed down, it's supposed to rain Sunday but I'm not sure how much the grass will take this late in the year.

Re: Garage Refurb

Nice clean job on the conduit. I have a friend that is having me wire up a generator and transfer switch for his house and shop located about half way in between the two. He's a over kill kind of guy and ran a 4" sleeve from the side of the house to the generator pad, going under a 4' concrete retaining wall. He will be pulling Triplex, PEX (for air at the house supplied at from the shop), and some other low voltage wires through it as well as a string for future. His idea is, he only has to go under the wall once. I'm not sure I would put the air line in the same pipe as the electrical, but it's his house.
IF I ever get to build a shop, I will run at least a 2" sleeve from the house to the shop for a multiuse raceway.

Re: Garage Refurb

When you run the wire for your friend, don't forget the string like I did. I walked back into the garage and was putting something away and looked on the workbench. As soon as I saw the brand new roll of green mason string, I just shook my head. Luckily, I didn't have a hard time pulling the wire so if I need to run something else, it shouldn't be too bad.

If u did forget u could take a sand which bag and tie it to the end of the string, stick it in one end of the pipe and a shop vac on the other end and **** it through

Thanks, that is one tip that was offered to me by a neighbor. Luckily, the run where I might need it is only about 15-18 feet long. I'm not going to sweat it and wait till (IF) the times comes and worry about it then.

Are you running power AND video (low voltage) in the same conduit? I was told that would cause distortion on the video and that you should have them separated by about 18-24".

Re: Garage Refurb

Do CAT5 conduit not have to be buried below the frost line in OH?

Don't know but I didn't as you can tell. Many around here will only bury conduit like this a short depth. I'm not worried about it heaving or having it inspected.

I was talking to the neighbor the other day about it. He has a conduit ran from his house to shop, just slightly deeper but way above the frost line, and has never had a problem with it.

I'm not running anything. I'm only doing the terminations for the generator. But in regards to your question, There is some truth to that. But there are ways around it. Properly shielded wire can be run parallel to a electrical wire. NEC does require however that any low voltage wire run in the same conduit as high voltage(120vac and higher, needs to be rated for 600v.)

Thank you for the compliments and be sure to take plenty of pics. When you stop to take a break, grab the camera and snap a few. You'll be surprised how pics you'll have at the end. Later in the future, you'll be glad to you took that many.

Re: Garage Refurb

A little update to some progress. Unfortunately, it's not to my garage but to the house garage. There will be some storage and work happening in the Nutt House to make the "wife's garage" more comfortable for the cold Winter and hot Summer.

5 Bundles of R13 for the ceiling of her garage. As we are not heating/cooling the garage but creating a barrier from the outside temps, this will be fine.

The ceiling of her garage, notice her Christmas decorations hanging around ?

The start I made today since it was crappy out. I think this will be a poor weather job to occupy my time inside.

Hopefully next year, we can put up some white ribbed metal for a ceiling.

Re: Garage Refurb

Is anything other than staples holding up that R13? Any reason you went with just R13 and not R19? I can't tell if those are 2x4 or 2x6 from the picture.

The bottom chord is 2x4 and I used staples alone. Since the garage isn't heated or cooled, there wasn't a real need for more R-value as this is a "parking" garage. I'm just trying to keep out some of the cold in the winter and some of the heat in the summer.

If the next guy wants more insulation, he can add it when he buys the place. :lol_hitti

Re: Garage Refurb

Do yourself a favor and pick up some 1X4X16's and place them perpendicular to the rafters. That will keep the insulation from sagging too much until you get your ceiling up. ...and the 1X4's will keep the paper on the insulation from getting torn on the staples. You can always use the 1X4's later for a different project.

Awesome job man! So many little things to take note of and nice to know that someone else does things to make them work! More than one way to do the job right!
Congrats on the place!

Re: Garage Refurb

Have you had the wood burner fired up yet this year? I'm thinking about not using the cabinet & blower this year and just letting mine radiate like yours and see how it does. Not sure there is enough in the budget for duct work and a ceiling this year but I do have a shitload of wood that needs burned!

Yep, probably about a dozen times. A few all day but others just enough to warm it up and let it go out. I merely use a 20" box fan to move the air around. It seems to move the air slow enough that it doesn't create any turbulence.

Pick up a cheap box fan and try it out. I also let that fan run year around to help with the humidity/moisture in the air. It probably wouldn't hurt to do the same in your big building either, a box fan doesn't use much electricity.

Re: Garage Refurb

I think I will. Yours is the only other I have seen with the heat exchanger hanging on the back. The basement is full of broken boards and wood pieces and there is still about 2 ton of coal down there that I could use as well. I will be trying the box fan for sure.

I'm not sure where they will be going but I did pick up some used (Free wood) cabinets for the garage. Just some cleaning and black paint.

Not much going on, did finish up the house garage and put the scuttle hole cover in today.

You can also see the ladders are now hanging up. I fabbed up some brackets about a week ago.

Re: Garage Refurb

I tried out my internet last week and it didn't work as well as I had originally thought it did.

I'll admit, I'm no computer or data tech guy. I relied on the internet to solve my problem. The jacks that I had used weren't cutting it. I thought I could wire them just like a phone jack, worked somewhat but not what I was expecting. I racked my brain one night and was getting pissed. What I found I needed was a switch or hub, so I bought a Netgear switch from Office Max. I also bought a crimper so I didn't have to borrow the neighbors again.

The Netgear ProSafe 5-port switch and crimper set I bought.

At work and in progress, the down hill slide to getting it working. A nice work table to spread everything out on and a cord reel above make life easier.

Re: Garage Refurb

The new internet outlet on the garage side. The wireless router wouldn't work on this side of the garage.

On the other side of the garage where the wireless does work but the wired is faster. I could actually stream Pandora out here now if there's nothing on the radio.

I started thinking that I oughta try dump and reload the old computer and leave it out here in the garage. I'd probably buy a new monitor for it, like a flat screen, but could be a winter project.

Re: Garage Refurb

So what was your problem with the internet? Did you simply have no connectivity?

I wired it into the first jack, and right to the next. I twisted the wires together to make a good connection and used the screws on the back off the jacks. The second jack would work but not the first. It was like the data would go right past the first jack.

Beats the heck out of me. :dunno:

Oy vey...
You can't wire data like phone (as you learned). Ethernet requires a star topology, home runs going to a hub or switch. Glad you got it figured out!

I was about ready to PM you and pick your brain Jeff. Fortunately Google helped me out once again. Live and learn, the best way to get experience.
