Looks like fun. . God knows you guys are doing more work in your spare time over there than any of our guys do in a year here.. Most of our fd couldn't spell remodel.

Re: Garage Refurb

Finally got got caught up after reading your thread a few pages at a time.

You have completed many projects that turned out great. [emoji106]

I just got my drill press light working. I purchased a 100w equivalant LED bulb from lowes for $14. More expensive than a regular bulb but will last nearly forever and if hit will not break due to the plastic cover.

Thanks for sharing and keep those pictures coming.

Between the other stuff at work and picking up supplies, we cleaned and painted the walls, laid the underlayment and ran the new water line for the icemaker. I need to grab a few pics of the remodel in it's current state when I work on Sunday.

Thanks for the compliment, I need to grab a picture of the light bulbs that I bought to use in my drill press. It seems that even with my schedule, life is busy right now.

Just finished the whole thread to this point and will enjoy future posts. Great job re-purposing many items from cabinets to machinery. Just my style as well. Keep up the good work in the shop and I'm subscribed.

Re: Garage Refurb

I've been out in the garage making about no progress but it is garage time. I started on this corner cabinet instead of the modifcation of the upper cabinet.

Started with a layout on the worktable. The 6" squares are for more than just looks, they help in layouts.

I started with the face. I'd rather have done this differently but all things considered, this will work, I hope. (all things considered; where it's going, who it's for, the abuse it will get, materials on hand and amount of funds to be recouped:none) I framed around the door opening with some clear pine so it shouldn't splinter like plywood and help with the hinge screws.

Added some shelves and temp bracing for set up.

Re: Garage Refurb

Added a back support and covered it with some 1/4" plywood.
You can see some pocket screws on the facing, thanks to my Kreg jig, other than that everything is put together with glue and brads.

Not quite in a corner but you get the idea.

We're putting Dura-ceramic down on the floor and it's also going to be used on the toe kick of the cabinets.

Re: Garage Refurb

Not much to share but a few pictures since I had the camera out in the garage today. I picked up another set of stools for the garage. I believe these will get hung on the wall until they are needed. I found them at TSC and posted in the Hot Deals section.

These are bulbs I bought to use in my drill press. They are coated with a material to keep the glass together if they are broke.

Re: Garage Refurb

BTW, I almost forgot. I snapped a few pictures with my phone the other day at work of our progress. It's not pics of my garage but of the kitchen at the firehouse.

The kitchen is still in disaray but the cabinet under the coffee maker is the one I worked on.

Cabinets still being cleaned and a few doors off. We put the dura-ceramic floor down Wednesday. Since the carpet in the hall needed some work, we'll be replaceing it with the same tile.

We still have some things to finish up. The new counter tops are on order and they are also laminating the kitchen table to match the counter tops.

Since we need the space to work, we did what we had to do and find a place for 3 fridges. One of them went in here.

Re: Garage Refurb

I had a little tool delivery from a family member Saturday morning. I had an Uncle pass away and I received his Grizzly planer that him and my step-grandfather had bought. Since my Step-dad had his trailer here loaded with the snow blower for my step-brother, it the perfect time to load up his older Cman box. It created an empty spot so I figured it was a great time to do a little repainting.

I cleared the corner out and caulked the joints between the OSB.

After putting on a lighter shade of gray and continuing around the wall.

Re: Garage Refurb

This would be the planer I mentioned along with a stand build by my step-dad's father.
It's a 15" Grizzly.

The home built rolling stand the planer sits on. Notice the wheels, they came off and old corner planter. It also has handles that slide out to make moving easier.

To me, this is the cool factor of of old school engineering.

The axle is mounted in the center but kept in place at the ends. This allows the planer to sit level on an uneven floor and not walk off while it's running.

Re: Garage Refurb

How many firefighters on the floor for each shift at your station?

What units are staffed?

In my battalion I have station staffing levels of 5, 7, 8, 8, and 9. This includes basic and ALS transport units.

I have a 13" CM drill press (with the backwards table!) and I'm going to add a LED bulb in the hole in the casting. And, uhh, turn the table around. Thanks for the ideas!

3 shifts of 5 guys. We run back up to the private EMS service. We have two '98 Smeal Engines (1st out and 2nd out) with an '88 Seagrave as a back up. We also have a '05 KME 100' mid mount ladder, '02 F250 as a utility vehicle, a '95 Horton on a Ford chassis for back up, a 12' Avon boat and a Arctic Cat 4 wheeler, donated by Arctic Cat (local warehouse dist) and the Chief has a blazer. Being a small dept, we do it all as needed.

Make sure to post a picture of the LED light once you get it mounted. I haven't had the chance to get back to my DP.

Not much, I'll try to get a little something up in the coming week. I picked up a few tools from the family estate. Life has just been busy at the moment, honestly I should be studying for a promotional test instead on GJ. :spit:

Re: Garage Refurb

I did a little update to my box arrangement. I decided it was time for a change to make use of it.

This is what it looked like before. I had two side boxes, one on each end.

I took one box off and hung it on the other one.

I was afraid that it might be too much weight hanging on one side so I came up with this brace.

I put it underneath the side boxes and used a car jack to take the stress off the side box and tool box.

Re: Garage Refurb

I'm going to add something around the bottom as skirting later. I first wanted to add a top so it would be more user friendly. The seam in the middle does make it odd.

I figured a little plywood "wood" solve the issue.

Then dress the edge up with some pine.

Re: Garage Refurb

Then I added some black Rustoleum to cover it and match the other benchtops.

While I was at it, I mounted a lock box in one of the drawers. I picked this up at HD (Husky brand) several years ago.

I actually had it mounted in my locker at the FD but took it out after an incident happened at the station. It's nothing more than a deterrent if somebody were to break in. If somebody wants something, they are going to get it. This is more of "keep the prying eyes" off some stuff that is in my box, no cash.

Re: Garage Refurb

Nice idea on the box swap and adding the work surface. But, will the jack be permanent to keeping it from sagging? Or, could a couple more casters be added to keep it fully portable?

The jack will be semi-permanent as I don't move my box around the garage. I could very easily add something with casters though, good idea. Maybe that will be a winter project.

Re: Garage Refurb

I came home work the other morning and the wife handed me a letter. It was from the people who own a house down the road which they bought from one of the previous owners of our place. There was a plot plan from when the origianl owner/builder of my garage owned the place and a copy of the drawing from one of the additions in 1969.

I picked up a cheap frame from Hobby Lobby and tried to flatten out the plans. Notice the ring from somebodys cold beverage.

Front view.

Wall view with rafters of the addition

and the floor plan with the addition. . .

Re: Garage Refurb

Thanks Busted Knuckle.

Trying to get a little touch up work done before moving some stuff around. I'm going with a diifferent shade of gray and one that I actually have the color code for. You can see I also caulked up a few spots too.

Moving right along....

Another section done and not the best picture also.

I believe before I move stuff back, I'm going to start repainting the ceiling too. When I first put this ceiling up, I painted it a very light gray. I've since caulked some seams and going with Kilz 170 Pro-X like I did on the walls. It should help reflect more light in the end.

Huh, go figure. I thought I posted a picture of the plans in the frame hung. I'll get on that.

Thanks, standard Ford color scheme I believe.

I appreciate the compliment.
