Impressive build! New around these parts, I've made it through pg. 70... will continue to wade through. Really dig the 4 eye, deep into a complete nut & bolt on a "fobra" build myself.

Thank you and glad you're enjoying the thread. Are you taking plenty of pics of your build ? When you think you've taken enough pics, take a few more.

Re: Garage Refurb

One of the daughters bought me this Sony receiver for Father's Day. I'll be making a new shelf or cabinet to put it in the next few days. I'm also working on building aJ-pole antenna for better reception. I'll try to get an update going in the next day or so. . . . I'm also considering picking up a CD player to stick in the cabinet too :dunno: On second thought, maybe I should just get a blu-ray player, I believe they will play CDs like a DVD player will.

Nutts, the blu-ray players have dropped in price to the point it's a no-brainer. I have two suggestions you might want to consider.

1) If you have a collection of CDs and want a place to store (and play) them, Sony made quite a few CD changers over the years so used ones are plentiful. I have two Sony CDP CX455 400 CD changers. I use one to play audiobooks and the other to play music through the intercom and stereo system. They sell for around $100 used on eBay.
Sony%20CDP%20CX455_zpsrfggtews.jpg

The weak link in the changers are the two skinny drive belts and they run about $12 on the internet.

2) If you have music stored on your computer but you don't want to tie up your computer, you can pick up an iPod. New ones cost several hundred but working used ones sell for around $50. I picked up three 30Gb Classics a few years ago, loaded 1,200 songs on them and play them on shuffle mode through the stereos in the two cars and the third through the system in the garage with a couple of switches letting me also play it through the living room or outside speakers.

My wife and I like listening to commercial- and chatter-free books and classic Rock&Roll.

That was nice of her.
I would support Bob's last option. Ipod or a Blue tooth connector. CD's, DVD's, and Blue Ray Disc's are going to be obsolete soon and it is much easier to control the music from you phone or a harddrive of some sort.

NOOOOOOO!

Ok, yes. I am mostly digital, but there is something about seeing cover art on the shelf. Digital is definitely better in the shop, any moving parts are harder to damage than a CD changer.

It was very nice of her and somewhat unexpected that she would buy it all on her own. She's 23, with a daughter, working about 32 hours a week, going back to school and has really showed her maturity in the last year or so. We see it first hand as she does live at home with us but she recently bought herself a nice used car, got her own insurance for it and has made her Dad very proud. She made me a Father's Day card, with Sophie (granddaughter) doing some coloring in it, and wrote some really nice stuff in it, it actually brought a tear to my eye.

Re: Garage Refurb

Totally serious, I have had two disc changers kick the bucket from grinding dust and other things. I constantly use an older ipod and of course my phone. No issues with them ever.

I really do like album artwork and I miss my CD collection, but I enjoy having all the space that it took up. It is also nice to have thousands of songs on tap so if you fit the mood, sometimes I like Frank and Sammy or maybe some Metallica or even the Spice Girls!

I knew you were serious. I'm considering making some type of cabinet for it to fit into, Hopefully, that will keep the saw dust down to a minimum.

I honestly don't think the sawdust is as bad, unless it is from MDF, that stuff will kill everything. If you build a cabinet make sure there are vents, then just get a furnace filter or something like that to keep the dust out.

Stop picking on me! (gratuitous post) Of course as a mod, Nutts can just delete them.

Let us know how the antenna works out, I may build one just to see if I can get a station form the next state over.

It won't be MDF, I try to avoid that stuff. I used it twice. The first time, I used no mask and hacked stuff up for a day from the dust. I came to a quick realization, that stuff is bad if you're not careful.

The cabinet or whatever it is will be plywood and I'll have to make 2 new corner shelves as the ones I have are not big enough for the older Sansui speakers I'll be using too.

I used to make speaker boxes for car stereo systems, lets just say I picked my nose a lot back then.

I used to have some nice Sansui equipment, loved that setup. I am a marantz groupie right now, but it has been 10 years since the last upgrade.

I will see him for Christams, I figure Nissan Crawler is a stationary target I can hit by next week.

Re: Garage Refurb

I didn't get much done as I wanted. I did more running than I planned but I did get a start on the reciever cabinet.

It'll get some type of door on the front. I'm going to cut the filter down and put it on each side after I make some type of provision for ventilation.

It is a good start.

The way you took the picture, the bench looks like it is the floor, at least for a second. Kind of an optical illusion.

On the used Ipod route, a few years ago I got a handful of used 30 and 40 GB Ipods from a pawn shop that weren't working for $5 each. Figured that most of the problems were bad batteries. Ordered some replacement batteries off the internet for about $10-12 each and got about 75% of the Ipods working. Turns out they also had a bunch of music already on them and one had a whole set of someones wedding photos. Go figure.

Re: Garage Refurb

Finished up the audio cabinet, except for the knob which needs some paint. I put a glass door in it so it should still receive remote signal if need be.

I put some holes in the sides to give it some ventilation and to keep the saw dust out, atleast most of it, some filters too. These were a larger filter that I cut down in half. I bent up some sheet metal brackets to try to hold them in place. The top isn't closed in as it sit up against the ceiling.

Re: Garage Refurb

Then I went outside and proceeded to put off some soffit, breaking one piece in the process. This gave me access to the area where the coax for the antenna is coming out.

I added some fiberglass when I put the overhang on. This is the area above the windows and I always felt it was a heat loss as there were gaps and not sealed up tight. The OSB that you are looking at is the ceiling.

I cut some 1" polyiso, put it in and filled the gaps with some expanding foam. It was nice and hot along with remnants of fiberglass in there. I had to squeeze my *** through the left side of those rafters. I'm not sure if anybody would have rescued me if I would have got stuck.

I some a few extra pieces that I think can make a third layer over most of it, along with a few more cans of foam. I'll do that after I get the coax fed through there tomorrow.

Re: Garage Refurb

I've got the J-pole antenna up and running. The receiver is just sitting there and hooked up to one speaker. Picking up a station about 90 miles away.

Nutts: great job on that insulation that should stop some of the cold and might even keep the hot days of summer out of the shop too.

i didn't envy you climbing through those rafters because I've had to do similar things and my 6'3" 230 pound body doesn't squeeze through much.

cheers

Re: Garage Refurb

Trust me it was tight and hot. I put a third layer on top of what you see in those and emptied 4 more cans of expanding foam trying to seal it up tight. I'm not sure why I was so worried about it but once I got it started, I figured I had the cans, might as well use them.

Re: Garage Refurb

Nutts: be a little careful with that expanding foam because if it doesn't have any room to expand sometimes wood can crack or break I've heard.

hopefully it will help with your heating and cooling of the shop.

Re: Garage Refurb

I don't think I'll have a problem. I was careful when I filled some gaps and the rest of it all on the surface covering the edges, basically creating a blanket.

Re: Garage Refurb

Nutts: when that stuff expands it's like an animal. I've had to cut my share of excess off that came out the backside of a hole.

it will wear out maybe in 30-50 years so let your great grand kids know. :bounce:

seriously i'm not sure of the breakdown of it when you need to re apply, but I've got some on the backside of my house's foundation at an access hole i made 30 years ago and it's in the direct weather and still there. my 30 year treated deck is needing replacing now after 30 years and wondering how the lumber guy knew it was only going to last 30 years.

cheers and have a great week

30-50 years, I'm good with that. On the low side, I will still be here and on the high side, it'll be nice to still be around.

Re: Garage Refurb

Somewhere on the GJ, I read that the spread of the expanding foam can be stopped in it's tracks by brake cleaner - I've tried it and it works great.

Another GJ handy hint. ;)

edit - If only a young Steve McQueen had a can of brake cleaner, "The Blob" could have been a much shorter movie. :lol_hitti

Nutts: I like the way you think.

BB: if that's true i'll have to try it because i'm usually having to cut it a day or two later. any idea how long it lasts in an unopened can because i have several that are maybe going on 15 years now on a shelf?

I assume you are referring to Great Stuff spray foam. If so, your cans are about 14 years past their useful life. According to Dow's spec sheet:
GREAT STUFF PRO Gaps & Cracks Insulating Foam Sealant has a shelf life of 12 months when stored at 75°F (24°C).
