Great news, hope you got some free time & the weather complies to put it in and get it all secure.

I have two tarps up, one in and one outside. The outside tarp will stay up while I install the door. The wood burner will be stoked up and I can plug in the space heater for additional heat if needed.

That wasn't a horrible wait. It wasn't good, but better than some. And you've got decent weather right now. Congrats.

It was plenty long enough but the door company is in a bind too.

Door time!

Yes sir, after working a 48 it will be.

So what happened yesterday is that I went to the door company before they called. I pulled into the parking lot, 2 trucks and it looked empty. I see a sign on the door, and it said they were quarantining and had a number to call.

I call and talk to the owner. He's running the office and his brother is running service calls. He calls me back and says the door is here so I pulled around and loaded it up.

Talking to him they are so far behind and says they have a few semi loads of doors in limbo. They had one customer trying to sell a house but needed a door so they got one from and order (with permission from that owner) to install so that guy could sell his house.

In talking to him, I think he thought my door was an install for them and just backed up. It may have been sitting there for a few weeks, doesn't matter now, I have it. Just waiting on the replaced panel for one of the other doors to come in.

Reading your last update and seeing your patience, it's a good way to start my day. Looking forward to seeing the door install.

NUTTS: I need to catch up on your thread and see what all you've been up to besides making a new access door. that said it looks like a good install and I bet you are smiling that you don't have to tarp or worry quite as much about security too.

I'm not sure you know about or have seen the stones you can buy for a 7.5 inch hand grinder (if you own one or maybe they have 4.5 inch ones too if that's the size you own). i've smoothed out more than a few cuts with mine or made room for a rack in a sloppily poured stem wall in my storage unit, but dust does fly so get a good mask and eye protection too.

if you'd like a picture just ask either here or on my thread or PM me with an email.

I think I recall you stopped racing even before Covid BS, but I bet it's in your blood so when are you going to load up the car in that cool trailer and hit the tracks again?

cheers

I can't really say patience, I was starting to get garage depression. . . didn't even want to go out there.

Doors and heat....moving along very well.

Normally, I would bulk at moving 20 some sheets of plywood but I was happy to move it. It was the opportunity to make progress.

Thanks.

Eric,

that is great progress.

I hope the people who are positive will be ok.

I think they will be, test results should be back on the other guy soon or have already been given to the acting chief. I guess we'll see if he works his shift on Saturday.

One of the other guys went out and got the vacccine yesterday, his arm was getting sore last night.

I've put in my vacation days for this summer to go racing. I'm the senior most guy on the shift so I get preference on days off first.. . .

4th highest seniority in the small dept but out ranked by four capts, no comment there, and by age. . . 3rd oldest guy on the dept. . . . but by no means does it look like it.

:rocker:

I'll be filling part of the concrete work in with some Sikaflex concrete repair. We'll see how that goes after the O/H door is in and I have regular heat in there.

So door install started yesterday. I found a mistake in the rough opening. I either **** at math, reading a tape measure or laying block. My opening was short about a 1/2".

Fixing the problem required notching the block. Instead of taking it out of one side, I took it out of both sides. I also cut about 1/2" for for the extra clearance.

After I had cut, ground, hammered and chiseled this little pieces out, I began to install the door. The vertical is in and I need to fab up some brackets to hold the horizontal tracks.

Oh, did I mention, after taking the interior tarp down, I had to finish putting plywood on the interior front wall ?

This was a nice view last night.

I also realized the attic access is going to have to be moved. The door track is going to be right under it. So it needs to be moved back probably 6-8 feet. It won't be a big deal and I'll do it after the door is done. Where it's at will make it easier to install the door brackets.

sorry to hear your measurement was off a bit, but looks like you recovered. just an FYI. my youngest bought some tools for her new home last year and even though I might own 30+ tape measures I always ask to use her Stanley FAT MAX tape when i'm over there doing any work. I should buy a few (they seem to disappear almost immediately after I use them, but I haven't lost hers yet).

nice work on the doors!!

best of luck on getting the days off when racing is happening and hopefully you will. :dunno:

Thanks Drives. I should get the days off, no real reason I won't unless. . . . well, nevermind.

Door installation should be done tomorrow, if all goes correct.

Good to see you are now "wind and watertight" as they call it here and can work thru the cold & wet months in relative comfort.

Just about tight, still need t get weather strip up and wrap some trim work.

Looking great! That is such a nice addition onto your house!

Addition to the house ? Well maybe "my" house.

I know, I got lucky and quite fortunate, not only for that span of nice weather but a fair share of OT that allowed me to pay for this project.

Well the plan has been for a while to add some pallet racking along one wall and possibly across the back for storage. I've been searching CL for some and went to look at it. Priced all the same no matter the size. I passed and kept looking.

I found another place farther away about 40 minutes. Sent some emails to see if they had any left and they had a sale pending. I waited patiently for my chance at what was left if there was any. I got a response back. Fearing I might get called for OT and have to work the next 2 days, I went yesterday afternoon, cash in hand. I picked up a buddy to assist in loading if need be and to have another person as it was a rural area but off a main state route.

I picked up 3 uprights, 12' tall and 3' deep. 14 beams plus a dented one, all 8' long. Then added some wire shelf units at $8/ea. These are 48" wide. I bought 5 and he tossed a 6th one in on the deal. Cash my hand to his, $320. Which was way cheaper than the other "deal" I looked at. That deal would have been $350 for the uprights and 8 beams alone.

I fabbed up some hangers for the hangers for the horizontal portion of the O/H door tracks. I simply do not like the looks of that perforated metal.

You can see how I attached the brackets and had to pull the insulation down to get it accomplished. Double 2x4 screwed to the bottom chord of the trusses.

attachment.php

The bracket through bolts with the track bolted to the vertical of the bracket.

attachment.php

Once done, I restapled the insulation and taped around the opening.

Here's from another view.

attachment.php

I moved to the other side and did that one. Once it was done, I raised the door but something wasn't right. The door was still heavy, way too heavy. Keep in mind, this is the 5th Wayne Dalton door I have installed, all 9x8 of the same series.

Doors was level, cables had the same slack, nothing binding, and the torque-master torsion tube was installed correctly. I raise the door and at 4 feet it makes a sound from the left side. I took the tension back off the spring and readjusted it. Nope, still doing it.

I made a call to the door company and talked to one of the owners, went through all that I had done. The only thing I could think of was a spring defect or it broke as I was winding it up. The owner was nice, honest and helpful. He thought I covered all the bases so he had one of the techs call me back as it was about end of the day.

About 45 minutes later, I get a phone. We go over a few things and found the problem, verified by the owner with my order paperwork. The newer doors have 2 springs. The older doors like I already have, only have 1 spring.

So I get the other side tensioned. . . . . and

THAT DAMNED BLUE TARP IS STILL THERE. I thought it might just disappear.

attachment.php

So on Thursday, weather permitting, I'll be wrapping the door trim and adding the weather stripping.

Eric,

The big question for the new door- have you installed the locking hardware yet so everything is secure?

The project is almost over. Like others have said l, first would the weather cooperate, funding the project and now it’s almost over.

Latches on both sides but I still have to buy a set of padlocks for it.

How much more do you have left to do?

Other than wrapping the trim work, it'll all be inside work as the addition is getting warmer. Its taking a while but the concrete is coming up to temperature.

After this morning, I'll be sidetracked for tommorow. I get one door and **** up another.

Leaving for work this morning, I hop in the truck, hit the opener.and did something I normally don't do. I checked for a ticket above my visor...yep, its there. Throw the truck in reverse and bam, back in to my garage door on the house garage.

It finished going up, one roller out of the track, I backed out, unlatched the door and lowered it, locked and unplugged it.

Damn, I can't win for lose.

Eric, every time things are going well I look over my shoulder to see what's sneaking up to bite me. You just showed me it's a good idea to keep doing that.

That attic access actually looks like it's in a decent location. It requires the door to be closed but that's not a very useful part of the ceiling. My garage needed a second access for the space above the garage. The garage door and opener tracks were in the way but I did a little measuring and a staircase would work if I located the opening beyond the door rail because the ladder would be at an angle. Your opening location might work if it was a little larger even if you use a regular ladder.

That addition is coming out nice! I'm sure you can't wait to finish up the interior and get everything in that addition that you planed to do.

As for the mishap, it was just a door and it wasn't a kid. I know it *****, as I've done stuff like that many of times. But as I tell my wife, it could of been worst and I can have it fixed or replaced.

On the up side, you know what to order and you know how long it's going to take for it to come in now.:D :headscrat

Having the door closed won't be an issue, but the track nearly splits the opening in half.

It'll get moved, not a big deal before the ceiling goes up. It's just for access, no real storage.

LOL, I still have the bottom panel for the one I hit with my JD after pouring the floor to show up.

This panel didn't look too bad. Worst case scenario, I have to order another panel. Give or take $140.

If need be, I can put the new panel on the house garage door, the less damaged panel on my garage where it won't be seen as often. Doing this prevents me from having to swap out the doors seals too, which I was going to have to do anyways.

I hate that when that happens. have you tried pounding the dent out or is it worse than that. the metal is pretty thin on the garage doors I've dented so maybe using a few body hammers and dollys if you can get them behind the spot might make it look GOOD NUF?

nice work on the door and glad you figured out the SECOND SPRING issue.

summer is just around the corner now that every day is getting a bit longer. (it helps me to think that on these cloudy cold and rainy days here so thought i'd share) :D

I finally got a decent day to finish up some exterior stuff.

I fueled up and fired up the space heater to give some extra heat with the door open. I fit and nailed up the garage door trim. Once that was done. I added the weather stripping. I also cracked one of the pieces at the top. I'll see about getting a replacement piece when the bottom door section comes in.

attachment.php

Once that was done and there wasn't any snow flying yet, I proceeded with the wrapping the fascia. Side and gable ends done.

attachment.php

All exterior work is done with the exception of dirt and stone work.
