I have a couple of newer 5 gallon plastic gas cans that do not have the bleeder vent that lets air in when I am empting them. Has any body added a venting vent to one? Or have any suggestions? They sure are hard to hold at the proper angle to pour the gas out.
Thanks,

In California, it is illegal to sell gas containers with the vent hole now; lucky I still have two 5 gallon containers that still have them.

It should have a tube inside the spout that is supposed to let it vent while you pour. They don't work very well, though.
While we are on the subject, how do states like California pass all those wacky laws? Do the citizens support this kind of stuff, or do the lawmakers start smoking crack after they get elected?

[rant] I can guarantee that I have spilled more gasoline on the floor from California's stupid gas cans that would ever have been lost from my father's old 1960's style metal jerry cans. I think I'll have him add them to my side of the will.... [/rant]

California passes a bunch of stupid laws and you don't know about it until you go to buy a product. For example, brake cleaner, you can't buy the Chlorinated ones; windshield washer, you can't buy any with alchohol content. There are many more stupid laws that regulated the buying public ...

Once California does it, it spreads to other states like the plague. Never heard of no alcohol in windshield wash, when did that happen? and why?

I had to drain ~18 gallons of gas from my truck a couple weeks ago so I could replace the tank. Went to Home Cheapo and picked up four 5 gallon cans. To refill the new tank, they vented ok. BUT! It took me about 30 minutes to figure out that the collar on the can's neck was a sliding collar that operated a valve. No gas comes out until the collar slides back!

With respect to crazy California laws; I read a few years back that charcoal grilles were to be outlawed, and from some point forward (2008 I think), only gas grilles would be allowed. Is this true? If so, I would never live in Cali for that reason alone.

Also, if that's true, are other types of open pit fires outlawed? i.e. campfires, bonfires, etc?

Thanks guys for the ideas & comments. I ended up drilling a 7/16 hole in the top just out of handle area. I took some small rubber cork like stoppers and drilled a hole length wise through them. Then I installed a small cotterpin in the hole and attached the cotterpin to the gas can (plastic). I also found sme 7/8 diam rubber stoppers like they used to use in thermos bottles that would work.

I cannot stand the NEW gas cans. i modified mine and it leaked while pouring.
Also, spilled out when transporting. I ordered 4 universal caps from amazon ($6 est) and they fit great and no hassle. Decided that i shoould have a vent so i ordered 5 vents from amazon ($5 est) and will install them. That combined with a funnel that i have attached to the gas can (not a small funnel) in a clear plastic bag will hopefully end the nightmare created by some stupid lawmakers who coould be on the take from manufacturers. I know what i need and they dont have a clue.

What are the caps under on Amazon? I had two of those cans and bought 6 more to have for my generator. Of the 8 cans, two have functioning spouts and three were replaced by the manufacturer. Worst **** ever made. I sent the manufacturer a complaint and they didn't bother to answer. Customer service at it's finest.

punch a hole in it. works good!

this. about a month ago I got sick of my 7 gal non-vented taking half an hour to fill the mower so I drilled a hole in it where the vent would be. stuck a big ole' 5/16" lag screw in the hole to keep debris out, it's loose enough I can pull it up/out for venting. shoulda done that years ago...

Look for EZ-POUR on Amazon. Spout and vent for a "water"can at under $10. I have a few, they are exactly what you need. They also sell vent plugs separately

I have added the small retained caps to new style cans but they leak even when closed. The hole requires a 31/64" bit or something odd. I used a 1/2" bit and it was still a bear to push the barbed end in. Really miss the old school cans.

EZPour kit. Easy, cheap and makes the new gas cans work like the old ones.

I had to, since the stupid new ones spilled gas all over my Harley tanks when I fuel them up.

Yeah, actually that is the only "safety" can that I like. But only in the small size. The push button control can't be beat for filling small engine tanks like chainsaw and trimmer.

Those who destest safety spouts ( like me) don't be put off by the safety aspect on this one , at least for filling small tanks. It works great for that.

I think it actually is better than most old spouts. I also like that they have plain caps too. Nice when it comes to transporting.

Just punch a nail in it and leave the nail in place when not pouring. I also delete any valve locks.

^^^THIS. I've done this on all my newer cans. The kit comes with a vent valve also. Tractor Supply sells them.

The EZ pour kits do not fit the spout threads on all cans. Just a fyi. I bought a bunch of those a while back and most did not fit and leaked, but the little vent works great. It is good to know you can buy them seperate.

They make two different caps / spout ring caps. Yellow and black. One is for fine threads the other for coarse. There is also a spacer ring that is needed on some cans to prevent leaks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are one piece spouts that fit small diameter fuel tank openings. But also a high flow spout. Attachment for the high flow that fits small openings, and a spout extender.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a bunch of the EZpour stuff for all my water cans.

If you don't add a vent to those, the constant inflate and deflate of the container will over fatigue the plastic it will start leaking. My next one will have a vent.

The vent is supposed to stay closed. You only open when pouring.

The real problem is that you are storing your gas improperly if the temp is swinging that much
