Good hose reel?

I'm looking to get a hose reel/retractor to hang on my shop ceiling. The air hose always seems to be in the way, so I'm going to get one of these. For using different air tools, not just airing up tires. I want one that is spring loaded or something, so that I don't have to hand crank and wind the hose back up manually. That would be a real pain since I want this thing to hang from the ceiling.

And as with all types of tools, I'm sure there are good ones, and ones to avoid. So I thought I'd drop by and ask you guys which one I should get.

Oh and this same question again, but for extension cords.

And then you've got the cheaper ones, like this. But it does have 4.5 out of 5 stars, with 55 reviewers. My guess would be that its not bad, but would probably fail after a 5 year period had elapsed. Then again, on something like this, I'd probably want a new hose after all that time, anyway.

Bennylava - the reason that Snap On is 75 bucks and not 750 bucks is because it's not truly Snap On. It's a Snap On licensed product.

Snap On has foolishly been licensing out their name for royalties on products they maintain zero control over. In fact it's a big issue between the Snap On Reps and Snap On corporate. When these cheaply made licensed products break, people find the Snap On truck driver to warranty the item and he has no Choice but to say "go call corporate". Which of course the customer becomes angry and bashes the dealer and not corporate which is who the responsibility lies with.

Me personally, I will never buy a Snap a on licensed product, I'd rather buy from my dealer.

Hannay -- the absolute best - they survive on mobile equipment driving around and working in the field every day.

Cox - ok for stationary use.

Reelcraft -- we call 'em "reelcrap" in our shop 'cause they are usually falling off and won't retract anymore.

I guess just being used to lousy tools failing prematurely. I read some reviews saying that one gets weak after awhile, and doesn't want to retract anymore. So I'll be skipping the green cheapo and going with the brands recommended here.

I feel like I should know this already, but what size is your standard air hose? I want to say 3/8, but somebody posted a link to one that says 1/4". That seems a little small. Half inch seems like it would be more beefy than I need. Not working on heavy equipment, just light duty cars and standard trucks.

Another important question: Is it best if these things swivel? It seems like it could turn out to be a problem if they don't swivel to the direction you're wanting to pull the hose.

Hannay the best that money cab buy. It's all we use on our trucks because they can take a beating. They are also made in the USA right here in New York State. You get what you pay for stay away from the HF ****.

Yes, 3/8 is standard for this kind of shop work. I got a 1/4 that came with a comp, still havnt figured out what I might do with it.
I agree that Benny wants a retractor if it hangs. At ground I don't mind a manual.

That is NOT made in the USA.

I like my Legacy, I would only buy the level wind version. They are (or were) made in the USA.

Finally went to actually purchase one of these things, and another question arose. I like this one, its brand name and is one of the top hose reels other than Hannay brand.

Problem is, does it actually swivel? I can see problems arising in the garage, if it won't. Doesn't the whole thing need to rotate in the direction that you're pulling the hose? Or would you just pull out everything you need, and lay it on the ground? Seems a bit counter productive in this case, since the whole idea is to get the hose up off the ground and out of the way. Sorry if these are noob questions, I've just never worked with one of these things before. Anywhere I ever worked that had hoses, we always just had floor mount hand crank reels.

I have the 50' reel from HF in my garage and it works great. The hose is kind of cheap but the reel is solid. When the hose starts to go I'll replace it with a good hose and then it should be good to go. It's been in my attic for almost a year now though and it's still in great shape. I did re-enforce the hose at the fitting with some cloth tape the day I bought it so maybe that's why it's still in such good condition. Either that or maybe I just got lucky.

I did a lot of research and for the money, I went with the HF. I have had it for over 3 years and only issue was the red rubber hose. It failed after about a year. I replaces the hose and everything is working GREAT. It looks just like the TEKTON 4678. Don't know how I ever did without it.

Reels like you linked (and like our 3695) don't swivel i.e. turn in the direction they are being pulled from. That's what the rollers are for.

It doesn't make a huge difference the direction you pull from as long as its mounted solidly.

Another vote for the legacy 3/8 50ft flex zilla. Only hose I have that will lay flat at freezing temps. It has a pivot on the Mount that allows it to seeing 180 degrees.

Heh, take a look at this thing. Looks pretty nice, and what do you know, its made in USA. But it does look like its more for house use and not really "shop" use. Not sure how long it would live in a commercial setting. Other than that though, it looks pretty cool. Electric hose reel.

They also have a giant green one for your garden hose. And one for an electrical cord. The electrical cord one is probably the one to have. Might want a more industrial type for an air hose.

I have one of these, they are pretty nice. The hose is rubber and made in the USA. The reel has a two arm mount instead of a single sided mount like most cheap ones.

I have a red one from tractor supply. Probably 8 years old. About 5 years ago the end of the hose was swelling up at the end so I cut it off and used a friend's crimp tool to reattach the end. Have not had any problems since. Paid $69.

My old shop got a bunch of kobalt ones & they didn't last very long. We got one good one from carquest that was still working like new 3 years later when I left. I don't know the brand but it was about $350 which I would guess is more like $500 without commercial pricing.

For extension cords I went with the green zilla thing. Someone here recommended it, and there doesn't seem to be a "hannay" of extension cord reels. Or if there is, I don't wanna pay for it lol

Cox makes cord reels too. They are pricey though. This little 25 footer was $260ish.
