Yes, great job on the drawers. I needed that tutorial for something I'm thinking of.

And your last post was #1000 on your 50th page, so congratulations! :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:

Got 3 more draws cut and assembled this afternoon/evening. Bit fiddly getting the sliders mounted in the cabinet correctly but now that it’s past bedtime I’ll try to do the rest tomorrow night.

Profile of the router cutout for the base to slide into…

2 done…

These 2 to get mounted tomorrow then work out how many more need to be made

Nice work! I'll need to build some drawers, when I finally go back to doing some work on the garage rather than in it. I assume you just set the router up with a fence?

Nice score on the bench. Casters would make it a nice mobile work bench, out feed table or dinner table when the GJ crew shows up.

Lyndon, you don't want that bench. It's the wrong color.

Thanks Lyndon, now you'll have to share what you are thinking of. Very secretive lately aren't you ?? ;)

Thanks MH, I just used the standard guide that comes with the router and tried to keep it straight at the start and end - think there needs to be a small router table in my future. All easy except the multiple clamping and unclamping I had to do. If I'd had single lengths to start with I could have done a full router edge first but was just using up the shorter off cut lengths of pine.

Nice job on the draws

Thanks BF.

Thanks shorty, I have some castors arriving in a day or so and I can then try to make it fit in my space. Failing that it will be a kicking off point to remodel my dad's garage that is in need of attention.

Would make a nice dinner table too....;)

Lista green for Lyndon you reckon hey ?

Top job GB..
With my timber drawer cases I cheated and did not do a rebate, I just simply nailed the base to the bottom of the frame.

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup. Plan A was to tack them straight on the bottom, but it being only 6mm MDF thought that it might need a little extra bracing at some point if they sag a little, so there is about 10mm underneath now that can have some ply etc added if needed.

Chipping away at the draws and managed to get the next 2 installed.

Pretty happy with the extension...

and they are even level :)

There is room to make 5 more of the shallow draws to fill that cabinet now so just need to squeeze some assembly in. The shallow draws have just over 2" of depth and the bottom ones have 5" of depth, so should be pretty handy.

Cheers GB.

GB: simple and effective. looks like you are making a lot of progress from the bits and pieces you showed us a few days ago. WELL DONE!

hope the rest of the drawers fit as nicely. another option might be to make a door if you have the room instead of putting fronts on all the drawers, but your call on that one.

cheers

Thanks Drives, original plan was to leave the cupboard doors on and have draws behind, but I would have lost nearly 3" in width allowing room to clear the door hinges.

Apart from the slides and probably a packet of cup head screws (just about out of the ones I was using) I've got no other cost in the draws as all the materials have been sitting for a rainy day.

GB, progressing well.

There is a fair bit of time in setting the drawers up to get them just right I found.

Regards

1/2 Cup you are not wrong, hopefully the last batch being all the same will go a bit quicker as I can just use my spacer block now on all the rest.

Coming out very nice. 5 more drawers will add a lot more storage.

Thanks Gerard, hopefully I can squeeze a couple of hours during the day tomorrow to at least cut the last batch of timber and then can assemble at night if need be.

Looking forward to loading them up...

You are my hero. You show your drawers to the world and get compliments!:lol_hitti

Nice shorts err... drawers:thumbup:

Lol Andy, there you go 5 seconds of fame ;)

Thanks fellas.

Why buy 4 when you can get 12 for not much more ?

View media item 67471
Managed about 10mins today in the garage and got the bench on the 5” castors I ordered earlier in the week.

View media item 67472
So now it’s at least mobile and as soon as I can finish making the draws and clean up the mess I can see if there is a permanent spot for it :dunno:

Note: I have been lazy and not used the dust deputy on the saws, so need to bump the dust extraction up the list a bit too I think...

GB: best of luck with the rest of the drawers and i'm certain you'll do fine. speaking of casters I just picked up this rotating bin that isn't a little thing and i bet the entire top bins will have casters in them. I totally agree why buy 4 if you can buy 10 or 12 or so and get a better deal.

have a great day while i keep trying to get organized at DRIVESITFAR'S HOME HARDWARE STORE.

cheers and hope you are enjoying your weekend. the bench looks great with sawdust and all.

1/2, now that could be "just style" or "bragging"???? either way it looks ****** good.
Keep going GB, I like the colour combo.

Terrick, thank you. I am just pleased with how they come up, its a tedious and a time consuming to get them just right.

I can really relate to what GB is going through..

Cheers

Drives that is one massive dodad. Have you got a use for it or you just had the affliction and had to have it ????

1/2 Cup and Terrick, yep it's a fiddly job. But after a few are in it flows from there (except for tonight though  - see below)

Should have gone to bed instead GB…..

Sometimes you should just go to bed instead.

Got home from work a tad earlier for a change this afternoon and after dinner was all sorted wifie and kiddies were happy watching some tele after a big day out (for them it is still school holidays…) I nipped out to do some cutting of stock to make up these last few drawers (pushing it with the router and mitre saw from 6pm to 7:30pm). Anyway got all the routing done and then cut all the fronts and sides on the saw in a bit of a batch job. Easy…

View media item 67550
Figured I had at least one assembly in me before bed, so wandered back down to the garage around 10pm. Started the same process as the others to find that the 1/4” MDF panel this time does not seem to want to sit in it’s 1/4” routered slot. ******.

Mucked around and ended up chamfering off a bit with the small hand plane around the perimeter to get it to slot in. Can’t quite work out the issue, maybe the router bit has worn a bit from the first round of cuts :dunno:

Managed to get the draw installed, my spacer for these shallower draws is my fold out rule which just happens to be 36mm to be the correct gap between the sliders.

View media item 67547
Anyway 5 down 4 to go.

View media item 67549
I've put my Makita 1/4" bit in the router this time so will give the slots a quick onceover tomorrow afternoon and see if that solves it. Gonna be almost 40C /100F here tomorrow...

Cheers GB.

Nice! Where did you get those from mate?

Thanks TB. Got them on evil bay, have sent you a PM.

Worked it out was the router bit causing last nights grief, hit it again with a new makita bit that came with the router and all good now. Assembly later tonight :)

Stay cool GB, it's hot here too!

Down to 21.3 C now with cool change and storms, only got to 35.3 here so not quite 40.

Cheers GB.

Bonus round QST.

Wifie and kiddies are up at my parents place tonight for a sleepover, so as soon as I got home this afternoon I sorted out the routing edit with another 1/4" bit, cut the bases (including redoing that dodgy draw from last night) and got things assembled and installed.

9 Drawers in total.

View media item 67562
Lined a few with the Kaizen foam I got a couple of weeks back and the rest used up what I had left of the conveyor matting.

View media item 67563
My young bloke now has a draw for his tools :)

View media item 67564
The contents of the truck tool box. We were in the tool section of the green big box store the other week, was on the way out and he says “Daddy, come back check this out”. Needless to say he wasn’t leaving the hardware without it. He pretty much uses my tools anyway now instead of toy ones so I figured he might as well start collecting his own.

Just need to get the melamine fronts cut and installed now - maybe on the weekend, next few nights need to be clean up!

GB: that looks AWESOME. i love the bottom drawer for your son that is PRICELESS. it reminded me about days gone when i would have to buy my way out of temper tantrums (not often), but i did have a weak spot for some of their decisions. GOOD ON for your son knowing quality when he sees it cause that set screams years of use.

i think you need to do a little reading in GJ's tool sections cause i could probably fill 10 of these bins with cool old and new stuff. hell just in my daughter's wedding chair build i bought extra casters everytime i met a new guy selling new ones so i think the top bin might just be all casters in her honor and i've found a bunch of stuff to build to maybe keep me from moving all my heavy stuff by picking them up like i used to.

keep up the great work and love the speech about NOT WORKING WHEN YOU ARE TIRED. yes there is another day and honestly if we don't screw up a project it's also a good time when we could get hurt.

Love the tool box truck.

It's actually a pretty cool set Terrick. Basic kit perfect for kids, has a square and a ruler in there too. I plan on making him a bench at some point that we can adjust in height as he gets older.

Each kiddie has a draw each now as DD wasn't too happy that she missed out which is fair enough. So the two bottom deeper draws are gone. I've roughly worked out what will go in 5 of the 7 shallows draws so I should have some room to *grow*

GB, the drawers have ended up real nice.

What are you doing for the drawer fronts?

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup. Current plan is to use melamine faces to match the look of the kitchen cabinets.

Drives, yep I must admit I have not ventured into that section of the forum much as yet. Certainly can't rush these things.:)

That reminds me I need to see if the extra castors I have will fit where they need to go. Good to let them air out for a bit anyway as they have that horrible rubber smell that you get.

Thanks for reading. Cheers GB

Very nice job on the drawers. Look forward to seeing the tools sitting in the foam all nice and neat.

Thanks Shorty, not quite all in foam - still working things out.

Got to fiddle for a short time today and try out a couple of ideas after much time during the last week or so looking at pics of how others have done things.

First was spanner layout in one of the new draws, tried out the coiled up electrical wire method. Seems to work well leaving plenty of room for spanner growth in this draw...

Haven't really found a nice solution for drill bits other than the huot type drill storage trays. Really wanted to have some sort of curved base to make it easier to pickup the smaller bits. Nothing really jumped at me and all the home made stuff only sort of catered to those that have single bit sets rather than multiple bits.

I had some PVC pipe (ID is 38mm) sitting under the house so I ripped it in half, cut to length and layed it in the draw. There is 6.2 lineal mts of tray in PVC in this pic, fills up quick so at least now I can see what bits I have instead of trolling through a full container wasting time.

I have some strips of kaizan foam that I'll cut as dividers between the rows that can have size labels attached. The lower rows are 1.5-13 mm bits.

View media item 67724
Problem is I don't have a full set of imperial sizes here (there are some mixed in with what is there now), so I might make a very shallow 1/2 size tray to slide in the top of the draw for the smaller 1-6 mm & equiv imp bits and leave the base for the larger sizes.

Will fiddle a bit more and report back.

No progress on draw front making this weekend, last weekend of school holidays so we were packing in the last activities with the kids and I ended up working today too.

Have a good week. GB. :beer2:

I too am struggling to find the best way to store the 60 + sizes of drill bits I've got . . . . .

Still looking.

Lyndon, too many late nights for sure lately, it's back to school this week for the kids so I think will be getting back to the earlier bedtimes :dunno:

How wide is your kinchrome cabinet again, this might work in one of your wide draws for 60 odd bits. ?

GB, love what you have done.

Drill bits are a real pain. Mine are in the plastic tackle boxes divided into their rough sizes.

That sort of works.

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup. Yes I've spent a good few evening hours looking for a solution, I'm liking this so far and with a few tweeks it might work quite well. I figure pulling out a draw is going to be easier than going to the old bit holder, having it flip open and drop bits everywhere or fall over when you try to balance it and do the same

Tonights nocturnal activity involved some kaizen foam half moon cutouts, a hot melt glue gun and the label maker.

View media item 67743
Previously I mentioned about a half size sliding tray in the top, I think I'll still do this but use it for the speed bore storage. I rarely use imperial size drill bits and at most would be using 1/8", 1/4" and 1/2" sizes. If the need arises in the future to store more then I can revisit.

I only had 1 x 8mm bit the other night before I started this and sorted out the container of other bits, now I have 10 :) But do need to restock on the 2mm bits, only 1 left, damn things break too easy.

Cheers GB.

Bit storage looks great. I've been looking for something and I think you've got it!

Is the PVC pipe just in the drawer by gravity? Does it try to roll when you grab something?

And one last question: do the bits try to jump slot if you happen to close the drawer too fast?

GB, The drawers came out nice and your drill storage idea is well done. Adding the foam and labels really improves the original idea. Now you got me thinking about using a drawer for this. For years I've always had many home made drill indexes sitting on top of the bench. Many times just a wood block with drilled holes and the bits sticking up. Never liked it really so it's time for a better way and I think you found it.

GB, are you headed down this way at all?, I have bits starting at 2" and down to 1mm that need sorting.
BTW, I use a digital Vernier to check the bits because I can't read the imprint any more.
Job well done

Hey GB, I finally caught up on your thread - great work on the insulated garage door, the cabinets, the Kaizen foam (I'm gonna have to get me some of that one day), the drawers, the drill bit storage, the ice-cream container shelves and anything else that may have slipped my mind.

Oh, and as for the (free) work bench - I think the customary "YOU ****" is most appropriate.

I have trouble with that too Terrick, most of my drill bits aren't etched deep enough for this to work - but on my taps and dies I filled the size markings with white paint pen, then wiped/sanded the surrounding area.
