Thank you for the update GB:thumbup:

Great scores on the WW equipment..

Thanks 1/2 Cup, also amongst it were these clamps.

View media item 86064
The red one cleaned up just by wiping over with some cleaner, the other 2 have been sitting in a vinegar bath. I've just checked them and they have cleaned up a treat - just need a rinse and wire brush I think now before paint or perhaps I'll try Drivesitfar's BLO treatment ? Then need to see if I can knock up some new swivel's for them and a timber handle for the F clamp.

Great finds!! I can't fathom people who don't want more tools.:willy_nil

Andy me too, it's pure crazy talk I say :lol_hitti

Good to see you back. And it sounds like there were some nice scores.

Thanks kirk, just no time to work on said scores at the moment :(

Hey GB,
You have been busy since I last checked in ! I also particularly like the spray can holder, great idea. Still riding your bike ?

Thanks Coolabah, glad you made it back from your travels all well.

I've ridden only 5 times since mid April unfortunately (some work travel upset the rhythm). Although I did get a couple of rides in during the winter evening dark after 5pm, so I know the front light works ok (cygolite streak 450 lumen). 500kms on the cross city so far and just coming onto 700kms since I started riding near the end of last September. Certainly less kms than I had thought I'd get in. Should be getting back into it more regularly over the next couple of weeks.

How was the O/S cycling trip ?

Looking good all around. Seems we’ve been in the same busy boat. You’re going to like having the bin storage. Are you using a Mac Mini? That’s what I have for a desktop.
I see the one wall needs some painting in the future. Might I suggest trading out your paint duties with Gerard’s need for labels?
I like the vise brake. Used my last weekend. Can you post a pic of the blue brake and how it’s mounted? I’d like to get a shear like that.

Thanks Shorty. The mac mini has been pulled out now, it was old when I got it and it just struggled to do anything as time went on.

Yeah that non-painted area bugs me too, once I finish the overhead updates I'll be able to tidy up some cracks/holes and repaint. I still need to label all the parts trays also :(

The sheer isn't mounted properly yet - just clamped. Here is the pic of the vise brake - is that what you are after or just the sheer mounting ?

Thanks Bret, my fall temps are the non-snow, low single digits C variety. Only a week and a half to spring and we'll be straight back up into the 80's F.

All, it's been horribly windy here last couple of weeks. It's the windiest August winds I can remember for a while anyway.

My planned clearing of horizontal surface areas in the garage was a fail. However I did manage to get a repair done on the camry. It's 19 years old but the door fabric adhesive had deteriorated on all 4 doors, it looked horrible and was an embarrassment to open the door. Kids pulling on it didn't help either.

I won't ever be an auto trimmer, but managed to get them back to looking almost normal.

View media item 86065
Used this sika adhesive available at the green box store, worked quite well.

View media item 86066
The back doors needed a slight cut and tuck (near the top of the lever).

View media item 86067
After that I gave both vehicles a deserved wash and light detail over the rest of the weekend, which lead me onto a few nights of watching chemical guys detailing videos on youtube ......and well the delivery man dropped these off yesterday.

View media item 86068
I already use the speed wipe and love it. Picked up some gallon sizes for regular high use items but just a small bottle of the blue guard dressing to try out - what's everyone's favourite tire/tyre dressing? Currently finishing off a bottle of Bowden's Own Tyre sheen (which is good) but it's expensive at $22.99 for 500mls vs $11.95 for 470mls of blue guard.

Cheers GB. Hopefully a sunny non-windy weekend coming up :dunno:

Hey GB,
The OS trip was awesome. Started in Roscoff in Brittany, then cycled down to Nantes often through muddy bush tracks (that really needed a mountain bike !) Then followed rivers and canals eastwards across France to Germany , followed the Rhine northwards ( just watch "Getaway" and look at Rhine river tours - Castles everywhere) then to the Netherlands. There is a lot of time to think philosophical thoughts on a bike ( as you would know) , and when life is reduced to the main stress of where will I next find food, wine and accommodation, not necessarily in that order - then it becomes pretty great. Met some fantastic people along the way . VERY different culture re: cyclists compared to Aus . In the Netherlands , cyclists are actually top of the food chain. Go figure !
I rather eccentrically took my Brompton , and was kinda chuffed by the disbelief from some of the locals I came across who were then gobsmacked when they realised I had already travelled thousands of kms on this little clown bike :)
I recall looking with interest at your DA polisher- it has prompted me to get one I think. You seemed to be happy with the Monzerna products when you did your ute ?
cheers,

That sounds like a great trip coolabah, I'll message you a couple of blogs cycling related that I like, you may like them too.

I'm no pro but I am happy with the menzerna products, if I get a chance on the weekend I'll try to give the Camry a claybar and polish and do some updated pics. Just found my notes on the polisher back a few pages, post 1176 page 59.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6451908&postcount=1176

This was the kit I got (still looks to be the same contents)

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6184650&postcount=901

https://www.carcareproducts.com.au/ro-polisher-das6-kit-plus-mint-protools.html

and the sealer product

https://www.carcareproducts.com.au/power-lock-polymer-sealant-250ml.html

CCP have some good info on the site about the polishers (although it's been a while since I looked over it)

Hope this helps

Cheers GB

GB: i'm trying to catch up on a few of my favorite threads today and it's been a while since i stopped in and said hi.

I just noticed you might want to clean up some clamps (or almost any steel looks better naked in my opinion) and put on some BLO. one tip is to shake the can well cause I heard that if you don't it might take forever to dry. and also just put on light coats and 2 or 3 work great especially if you can set your project in the warm Aussie sunshine. this time of year it might take a while for the BLO to dry inside your garage, but it will dry eventually so you don't have to wait til summer to try BLO on small items.

good luck and keep up the great work!!

Look forward to seeing some detailing photos soon :) are you going to do the old masking tape line for photos of before/after?

Ken, no car play today - showers on and off. Think I'll skip the masking tape step, you'll just have to take my word for it :lol_hitti

Your US trip looked good mate

Nice job on the door panel. More than good enough for what it is and who it's for, right?

xtremek, yes indeed :pimpflash. Fabric is still holding well 2 weeks in.

Thanks Drives, I visited the big box store this morning and hadn't written BLO on my list so hence forgot to get it. We don't seem to have a spray can version as you describe though.

Do you think these are candidates for BLO or paint ?

Here are the clamps after 2 weeks and a day in vinegar. It did a billiant job cleaning them up, I only had to use light hose pressure to wash them clean - you can just see the flash rust starting already in the pic.

View media item 86184
Managed to get them a little cleaner with a wire wheel, still a couple of tight spots to hit maybe the imitation dremel tool might work.

View media item 86185
For BLO I guess they might need a bit more TLC with a file and some emery paper to clean up some rough areas.

My Dad's birthday is coming up this week, so I've made him a 6 tray organizer. Didn't take too long as I've got all the measurements sorted from the bigger one I made a little while ago. Just need to get some backing on it and it's good to go.

GB: I put in BLO with a rag cause it’s like olive oil. If you decide to buy some and use it be very careful about where you put rags when you are done cause they can self combust and start a fire. Put in a metal can with lid or I just hang outside to dry.

Clean up metal as much or as little as you like before applying BLO. I sometimes do a light cleaning and wipe on over old paint or patina or sometimes I go all out to make the piece NAKED and then wipe it on.

Another tip for you and others using vinegar to de rust make sure you rinse if vinegar and dry cause vinegar will EAT STEEL IF ITS LEFT ON IT

Just dropping by quickly, but I agree with Drives, once you pull anything out of the vinegar bath give it a quick rinse with a Bi-carb soda mix to neutralise the vinegar, otherwise it all starts again.

If I get a sec I might give you a call later in the week.... (note the - "if I get a sec" bit. They're rare these days....).

Thanks Drives, I may have a chance to grab some BLO in the morning at the big box store. Yes gave it a good rinse after the vinegar bath along with blowing out with compressed air and drying in the sun before I gave it a hit with the wire wheel.

Might take a while to get back to cleaning them up, but even if I do a quick wipe over it won't let it get any worse.

The rags do get rinsed and dried or otherwise dried and disposed of. Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Lyndon, good to see you still about. I'm behind myself and struggling for time also. The garage and projects are what keeps me sane from the daily grind at the moment so trying slowly to get a few things done.

This evening I made no progress cleaning up, but did get my Chemical Guys Grime Reaper degreaser diluted into some 1 litre spray bottles, 1:5, 1:10 and 1:20. Keen to see how this stuff works. I have a heap of grease under the front of the hilux where the CV boots on the front driveshafts had cracked and thrown grease all over the shop. Only managed to get them pulled out and rebuilt about 3 weekends ago but never had clean up time. Supposedly 1:5 should work well on the bad areas and the lighter mixes for in and around engine bays etc.

In true fashion my label maker ran out printing a label for the wheel cleaner mix I was going to do as well, will have to wait for the ebay fairy to drop me some replacements now :(

Thanks for stopping by.

Can I ask why the different dilutions? is it just to save product when you don't need full strength?

GB: I had a couple pics I hope you don't mind me sharing on your thread. one vise is my 185 pound Reed 4c that was sandblasted and had 2 or 3 light coats of BLO put on it about 4 or 5 years ago and i've just had it sitting on a shelf since then while it waits patiently for me to find a spot for it and build a stand for it.

the other vise is my Reed 2c that i just wiped the grease and dirt off and put on a couple coats of BLO so you can see what something looks like when you put BLO over original paint.

good luck with yours and I'm betting you'll like it. one thing to mention is that since your weather isn't very warm at the moment that it might take a few weeks to dry even if you shake the can good before putting it on your rag and using it.

good to know you know about BLO on rags that can self combust.

kenfab, the chemical guys grime reaper is supplied concentrated and their label states a 1:20 mix. In some of the reviews on their product page several people are recommending 1:5 for cleaning the really nasty stuff, then I just made the 1:10 to be somewhere in the middle.

My plan is to do a bit of testing cleaning up some caked on grease around the front drive shafts on the hilux so I'll take some pics of what works best if I can and make some notes. It may be that I have a sprayer or 2 spare again in the end :dunno:

To date I have always used the kenco degreaser from the big box store but only ever used it straight, so we'll see how the CG stuff works.

I also guess that yes, if the product works well in the suggested dilution it should make it last longer too. :)

Might make a bottle up for my dad to try on some machinery, he regularly enough has the odd excavator visit for a service and clean.

Cheers GB

Hi CB, thanks for dropping in. I've used several sika products also for various things, no complaints from me.

QFT and weather permitting will see if I can get some testing done on the weekend of the purple stuff, hump day today just starting for me so a Saturday will be here soon, never soon enough though.

No worries posting pics Drives, I did do some forum searches based on BLO and ended up in the depths of the vises thread somewhere :lol_hitti

Typically the weather warms up pretty quickly as soon as spring hits where I am, so should be ok to try it out soon.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I don't think those old reed vises could be improved upon, they look perfect.

Thanks for stopping by.

Great idea on having the different ratios of cleaner. Guess I need another case of bottles. Look forward to your reviews.

I will be very interested in your findings as I've just ordered some Grime Reaper. I must've missed the explanation but what on earth is "BLO" ??
edit: never mind , googled it ... I never knew you were a member of the Barbie Liberation Organisation ? :lol_hitti
I will need to keep my eye out for spray can Linseed oil I have not come across it here either.

I've been thinking I need to go back through my thread and pull out all the projects I've listed but not finished or started, shop slide out bin and shop air lines come to mind...although I look to my right and there are 24 fastener trays that need labels too.

A little QST let me get the open face overhead cabinets finished and mounted today, I cut the panels for the last 2 when I made the parts organizer cabinet for my dad last weekend, and I'd already made the first cabinet a couple of months back.

View media item 86416
View media item 86417
View media item 86418
So it's coming together slowly and there is some horizontal surface area appearing again which wasn't there when I started today.

There are shelves cut for the 2 RH side cabinets but not installed. I hadn't really planned what was going to go up in them apart from the computer tower. The liquid bottles fit easily and are out of the way for now so the shelves can go in later.

There is room now for a small cubby to the RH side of the screens (perhaps for soldering station storage), I also have a full 6" from the RH side of the tray organizer to the wall so it could slide over and give a little extra room also.

At some point Gerard will be able to come and paint :spit:

Anyway was a great start to spring.

Cheers GB

Nice, very nice!!

Thanks Andy

Wow, that’s a super nice, clean set up.

Thanks Shorty (you just watch dem toes)

^^^ ditto on that, looks great!

Thanks Duker

Very nice Rod! Those little spaces beg to be filled.

Thanks Bob  I was thinking about squeezing in a drill/battery/charger area last night into those inches of space. Often I just want to grab a drill and go. I'll shuffle the tray cabinet to the right during a weeknight and see what room is there to work with.

Thanks Drives, I've determined that FSD is only temporarily curable, symptoms start to reappear within 24 hours.

GB,
Good job on the cabinets!

Thanks Jon

GB well done.

Thanks 1/2 Cup

Looking great GB. You are quite the good cabinet maker and it's giving your space a very clean and organized look.

Thanks Bob

Those cabinets look good! The whole space looks very organized.

Thanks Matias, I'll be sure to jump back in your thread, I've got a feeling I had it bookmarked before and lost it. Thanks for stopping by.

DANG!!!! It sure is pretty.

Thanks Kirk

All, thanks for stopping in and for the comments I do appreciate them. Standing here tonight doing some work related work rather than garage related work, however it is good to have some room to do what I need to do.

Full disclosure there is a bit of clutter on my big mobile bench behind me to go yet but mainly tools and screws etc that just need putting away and weren't because I couldn't get to the organizer trays (yeah that's my excuse). Maybe I can potter with that tomorrow night.

Cheers GB :beer2:

Well, I am a little late to congratulate you on how great a job you have done as I am trying to get over my dismay at my own lack of abilities compared to yours- couldn't you have at least gouged something or hit it with a hammer somewhere like I would have done? I can show you how if you like ....
Seriously , I agree with hewey,- and FWIW my kitchen is even more jealous than me ! :)

Thanks hewey, lol yeah it used to by my kitchen before we renovated the house.

Coolabah many thanks. However without my favoured table saw and slide compound mitre saw these would be somewhat less pretty. It's amazing how easy things become when you can get a square-straight cut and be able to repeat it.

I couldn't agree more. That's why I like metal, I can always fill the dings with weld or bondo.:lol_hitti

Thanks xtremek, yep once you make those 4" errors with wood it's a bit harder to fix :lol_hitti

All, had a few hours of quality QST today as the family were out on play dates and such. So I filled that little void area with a drill storage setup.

Didn't really know how it was going to end up, I looked at a lot of pics online and on the journal, but in the end hanging upside down was the go.

Squeezed a couple of small shelves in after to hold the chargers. Just need to find some lumex or rubber tube to line the inside of the cut slots for the drill to tidy that up, but otherwise very happy with it.
