I am either late for the last spring cleaning or getting a real early start on the next one!

3 more trash cans filled with most of my leaf piles and the rest of (3 big piles) of leaves from my neighbors curb.
Porch cleaned off.
Julie and I are going out to lunch tomorrow on another coupon deal. Good way to celebrate the week together. I treasure every week with her. :bounce:

Here are photos of the stairway clean and empty. It almost feels too wide. The cats think I made them a new playground and are racing up and down the stairs!

Also included are a couple of photos of a place we went out to brunch last weekend. One thing I am learning through all this, is that life should be lived in balance. It is an odd lesson to take from a group where the biggest garage with the fanciest cars is celebrated. But what can a person do with 18 pop up trailers. All my energy is spent dealing with finding places to store them and protecting them from damage or theft. Not much time left to enjoy them. So what does this have to do with dinner out? Well, I discovered there is nothing wrong with eating out at a nice place once in a while. Balance. And the cleanup is proceeding in the same fashion. No herculean efforts, but rather, a slow steady progress. Each day I make purposeful changes. And I am enjoying the work. There is enough change to be satisfying. And I am learning to enjoy giving things up. There is freedom in having just the right things and no more. Part of the balance is knowing I don't have to sell and throw away everything I own. I know the financials are being taken care of. The taxes are on track to be paid well before the deadline. I don't have to give up my shop and all my tools. It will be a well organized usable shop. The secret is that I am now facing things I never faced......and dealing with them. That gives me a feeling of control. Before I felt out of control and had given up. Now I know, I just KNOW, that I can do it. I can do all the things necessary to have a good life, a balanced life. And that, compared to what it has been, will be extraordinary! I just set up Dr's appointments for both of us and will be setting up dental appointments as well. Saturday, Susie our dog, will go to foster care in preparation for a new home. So I am hitting a lot of different areas and making changes and improvements. It shouldn't surprise me. You all do all these things daily. Why shouldn't I?

Bill, all I am going to say is...great job  If you keep that attitude, you CAN turn your life around for the better. Good luck at the Doc's.

I haven't posted on this thread in awhile, but I'm really happy with all the progress. Cleaning up the stairway is a great thing. It serves as a big visual reminder to you everyday that everything could be as open and clutter free. Keep up the good work, Bill! I need to cleanout my garage and basement. I have 10lbs of **** in a 2 lb. bag right now!!!

I saw that stairway in person - and the piles that were on either end - that is an accomplishment to clear out.

I am still thinking that what most in this area consider "normal" heat and running water inside a home is most important, but I guess you've done without for a couple of years - you know how to handle it.

Good to see noticeable progress Bill.

Part of the growing up that Julie and I have to do, and part of the man'ing up I have to do, is to realize we haven't the time or resources to care for all our pets. Susie is a rescue dog we went all the way to Bloomington Indiana to get 5 years ago. She is a mutt but a very cute and friendly dog. But her time with us hasn't been the best. She has a bladder problem which causes accidents. That has caused her, and us, to prefer she be an outside dog for the most part. And that in turn meant we didn't give her much attention. With all the work I am now dedicating myself to do, I didn't see things changing for the better. She deserved better if I could find it for her. So I contacted a local no kill rescue organization I had adopted a dog from years ago. They agreed to take and foster her and find a new family for her. Hopefully a family with the time and resources to care for her properly and even more importantly, to lavish attention on her and make her days rich and wonderful. It took a while to get Julie behind this. In fact it has been hard for me as well. Susie is a wonderful dog. And we could have kept on as before. We didn't want to feel we failed. But we had to think we had at least provided her an alternative to not having a life and home the last 5 years. And now, by letting her go, we could insure her a better future than we could give. So it is, after all, the right thing to do. And doing it is satisfying. But we miss her already. We miss her every second. She went to foster care today. Julie couldn't bear to see her go so I had to take her. And guess what? She's been to the vet already and they found the reason she pees so often and a surgery is scheduled for Mon. She gets along with her foster family and will be a great addition to the new family they will find for her. Here's a photo.

Bill I agree you did the right thing " for Susie " and she will be happier for it . I am a firm believer that pets go outside to do their business and then come back inside as they are part of the family . SWMBO was raised where animals went outside and if you spent time with them you went outside .

There are different attitudes about animals in different locales. My brother lives in farm country and has 16 acres and a bunch of animals. The only animal that comes inside is a small dog. But an important lesson I learned after talking to him was that even with acreage and a giant barn, they have a limit on the number of animals they will keep. And they maintain a petting zoo and keep chickens and horses.

I haven't read every single reply, so this may have been said already. I reached the conclusion about 2 weeks ago, that if I lost EVERYTHING in a disaster, what would I replace with the insurance check? If its not on that list, it needs to go.

I'm a paper hoarder, its all in file cabinet and file boxes neatly, but I have every financial document since I entered the workforce at 16, and I'm 39 now. I could likely chuck everything but the tax returns lol.

Bill,
Its been a while since my last check in here. It sounds like some progress has been made. And it sounds like there have been setbacks as well. But always keep in mind "PROGRESS! NOT PERFECTION!" It is good to hear your wife is getting on board with the work. This alone helps a lot. Being on the same page of what you are trying to accomplish( and why) makes both of you accountable to the other.
My main concern here is the basement. All of the sewage damaged, contaminated, and desease infested stuff is still down there and festering with poisons unimaginable. and you are living on top of it! I am worried for your health dude! If you get sick and croak, Julie wont be able to carry on alone with the clean up and might lose everything in a county health dept. action.
Keep on keeping on!

Thanks for asking Jeff,
Only 5 dumpsters this week as getting ready for Thanksgiving. Wrapping presents for a bunch of missed family birthdays this evening to drop off at Thanksgiving gathering tomorrow. Gifts are a bunch of things we already had including gift cards that were received as gifts and are being repurposed (Regifted). A great way to save money and cut down on the stuff cluttering our house. And as we have been getting to the bottom of stuff in these rooms we have come across lots of wrapping paper and tape and gift boxes and things we had bought for future gifts. Win, win, win!
I now have a full dresser cleaned out for my clothes and my side of the bed cleaned out except 3 boxes worth and her side except 3 boxes.
A big project the last few days has been emptying half of the 3rd bedroom/office. It was so full that things were stacked to the ceiling and coming out the door so you couldn't even see into the room. That's the way the other bedroom and garage were too, and they are also half cleaned out and accessible now. But all three are still what I call standard hoarder condition. Piles of stuff around the perimeter with access to it all through the middle. Before it was what I call extreme hoarder condition, no access and full wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so progress is great, but so is what still needs to be done.
In my mind I see a bedroom empty save a bed, two dressers, a dressing table, a stereo/TV table, a couple night stands, and a chair.
In the spare bedroom I see 2 dressers and 2 hanging closets and maybe a chair and dressing table.
In the office I see just two desks and two bookcases.
The living room will have a couch, coffee table, 2 wing chairs, TV and stereo and a bookcase. Oh, and a bird cage.
That means that each of these rooms still has dozens of boxes and bags of stuff to still be removed. So where will all this stuff go?
Well, much of it will get pitched. Catalogs from years ago. Old magazines and newspapers and bills and paperwork. I am about to toss an old school Sony TV and a few very old computer carcasses picked up off trash piles.
There will be storage in the future. But it will be normal family storage. Out of season clothing and recreational things like skis and kayak gear. There will be a shed kept for yard equipment and tools and machinery.
As I get rooms back and dedicated for their intended purposes I won't need to have a coffee pot upstairs in the bedroom.
I am filling the work van with dirty clothes that will all go to one big laundry session.
The whole place is in a state of change and flux. I am getting ruthless about removals. Once an item is out of a room, nothing comes back in.
We're down to two dogs and while I miss Susie, I know she is in a far better place. We have the Cockatiel and cage listed for sale which will leave just the African Grey.
Photos after the holiday when there is substantial progress.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all. Treasure your families. One of my remaining two brothers just got out of the hospital after a gall bladder removal that was so far gone it was gangrenous. Life is precious. Time is precious. Your support and friendships are precious to me. Thank You.

Bill,
When you put the brakes on things last month, many of us were frustrated/discouraged. For the simple fact that we wanted the best for you as quickly as possible. In the grand sceme of things, while taking longer, by you taking control, I think it has been better for your mental health. I suppose I liken it to alcoholism. Its one thing for us to come in and take away all your alcohol, but for you to continuously face you demons and pour out one beer at a time, is YOU making the change, not the change being forced upon you. In the end you will know that you had the strength to actually do this, rather than feeling like a victim of your condition and of the situation.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I'm thankful you had the courage to share this with us. For you own well being as well as an encouragement to others to get out there, clean up, and get organized.

Keep it up.

-Jeff

+1 With you and your wife doing it, you are winning more than just a clean house. You will have a much better chance of keeping it that way.

The holidays have always been hard for some of the folks that I am close to that struggle with addidctions/issues. It takes strenght from deep down which you have been showing on here. I read this whole thread, and wow, just wow. It looks like you are on your way, Bill, I am impressed! I know from personal experience how it feels when you have too much, but can't let it go.... At one point I had 15 cars on my half acre. Now I am down to 8.....
Some of you guys really have no idea how it feels to be overwhelmed by your own stuff, yet unable to let it go. It is not something you can just "throw it all in a dumpster" and be done with it. That is like telling someone with clinical depression to " just cheer up!". Or telling someone with anxiety " just stop worrying!" ( I actually told my mom that when I was a teenager!)
I just joined this forum last week, after lurking for a couple of years.....then I found this post. Read all of it, and I have to say I am proud of all the members here who have offered their advice, help, and time. I think I am going to like it here!
