Chicane, if that's all you are seeing, then you have missed the point. Its not actually a garage thread, its a man who is taking his demon head on and incidentally, kicking its rear quite well.

I like what I see - I like it very much. Needs more pics, but that staircase definitely looks like you'll be all smiles every time you walk up and down it. That's the kind of thing that keeps you going, and in the right direction too.

You've also taken on a number of things at once AND dealt with them, which is all the more impressive, but still something to watch out for. As long as you keep finishing things, you're good, but don't start more "sub-projects" than you can finish in the foreseeable future. That'd make it too easy to fall back into old habits.

But you're doing good. Enjoy what you've already achieved and go for more!

It's also amazing to see the general tone of response in this thread improve so much. It was all negative when I first posted, now it's enthusiasm and encouragement all over. And that's not because of us - it's because of YOU!

I fail to see the point of this thread. Just some guy who is unable to clean out his junky garage. Am I missing something?

Maybe you need to start at Page 1 and read through instead of starting two or three responses ahead of your response.

Wow, very sad. Feel free to stay out of this thread if you don't see the point.

Bill,
Add my name to the list of people who are watching this thread and hoping that you reach your goals. As with many other here, your story has inspired me to do some house cleaning of my own, and my wife thanks you for it.

Chicane,
You may be one of those lucky people who go through life with no muss or fuss. You just do things the right way first time and every time. You never go out on tangents or get out of touch with reality. I truly envy you. It would be so much easier for me if I could live that way. You plan and act on every task and responsibility in a timely manner and have no missed opportunities or drama in your life. I see how you wouldn't understand why others wouldn't just "do it", why they wouldn't just live like normal people. What's the big deal? Just clean it up and keep it that way.
You are right. It should be no big deal to me to have and keep a nice garage, house, and life. That is my goal. One day I won't give it a second thought. I'll be living just like you. But I will never forget that other people struggle with things like this, and I will understand and have a little compassion for them, because I did walk in their shoes.

All of us who have been through life on this thread know, at some level, what Bill and his wife are living. He's the one choosing to make some difficult, but necessary, changes to get to the life he envisions (which I think he once had). We can't do it for him, but we have helped by hanging in there with him. Sometimes emotional support is more important than monetary or physical support. And sometimes it's easier to "bond" with a remote person or group than someone who is "in your face" every day, trying to hold you accountable to their vision of what is needed.

All of us who have participated through all Bill's ups and downs have had our eyes opened to our own struggles. How many of us could reveal so many details of our lives to this many people and not shut down (by leaving the thread behind)? Bill has "listened" to all the advice, even hosted on-site visitors to his "work in progress" and is taking more than baby steps toward getting his life in order. And helped many of us along the way.

People who by chance open this thread cannot understand what's going on without reading the entire thread before responding. This thread is the story of many people in this world. It's more sensational than reality TV, but more satisfying because Bill and Julie are doing their own intervention which has more chance of succeeding than anyone doing it for them. There's a real strength there that can't be given to someone to get the same results.

Well, the Office/3rd bedroom is far from complete but a couple of photos to show progress. Note that it started out as many other rooms with stuff literally bulging out the door and filling the room and door floor to ceiling and wall to wall. The photos here show the stuff from in the doorway already pulled out into the hall. Then the middle of the room with most of the stuff removed leaving quite a lot of things still stacked around the perimeter. When complete, this room will be warm and inviting but without any extra elements. I picture one desk with 2 computers and 3 chairs, a bookcase and maybe a TV.

This thread is perhaps the most fascinating on GJ. For a while it got quite nasty and I stopped even watching but then there were hope again when it could be seen that Bill was doing the right thing by doing it his way. We've had here some real life wisdom but there have also been idiots posting quite mean things here. Thanks for sharing it with us, Bill, and add Estonia to the list of 'pullers'

Bill, I'm seeing some progress here...keep it up.

I want to give you a little advice here, which I do all too often ;)

Go into each room, and take a couple pictures from a couple different angles. Save them to a folder on your computer. Every time you feel overwhelmed, go back to the original pictures. You'll see what a huge difference you made, and it'll make you feel a lot better about the progress. It's hard to see every little step when you are doing it, and it's easy to forget where you started. I bought an old house, and started renovating it Aug 2010. It ended up being a lot more work than anticipated: all new wiring, new bathroom, new kitchen, new plumbing, new front and back deck, I gutted the basement...now I have to work on finishing touches (new trim) upstairs. I was going crazy thinking about how crappy the house looked, and then I found my old pictures of the house I took when I was looking at purchasing it...and even though it's not done yet, it's one hell of an improvement.

The fact that you made it into the middle of the room is progress. Keep it up but please remember that if you are just shuffling from one area of the house to another, you aren't getting to your goal.

Thanks for posting pics.

Last bunch of photos of the office. Sure is a bunch of stuff in there (And that is only half of what WAS in there. Photos with a cheap point and shoot make it seem more cluttered than it is, but it is still PLENTY cluttered. It is not pleasing to my eye like it used to be. I used to think of piles of things as potential things to use. Now I think of it as an impediment to what I want to do.

If it were me, I'd try and take this room in a few stages. First I would collect every book and magazine and throw them into boxes and take them to the local used book store. I would also say that within this room, I can keep no more than 7 books/magazines. The local used bookstore would probably give you a huge credit for tjose books which you could someday use to get a few back if necessary. Then I would try and gather all of the Computers and call the local High School, Goodwill or Junior college and see if they wanted them. If not, most PC repair stores will recycle them for you and you won't have to worry about the environment. LAstly I would collect every lamp in the room and donate to Goodwill. Someone needs them more than you ever will.

Keep on Keepin on, Bill!

Glad to see that your views of value are changing for the better. Just think your cell phone is smarter than those computers :)
Keep it up Bill and you will soon see the fruits of your labor. And remember your quote "COMPLETLELY clean things out".

If you're even remotely like me, you will have to remember that nothing will ever be worth (usually) what it was when new. I cleaned a hall cabinet over the weekend. Among the discards were 2 humidifiers, one cool mist and one warm steam. One needing a filter thats no longer available, and the other I was going to disassemble to see if I could fix it.

They went to the trash....life is too short. Along with a few bottles of 10 year old vitamins lol.

Keep in mind you are likely motivating as many people as are helping you out, and I want to see us all succeed!

I had a Sony TV just like the one in your photo (well maybe bigger, my was 27") that I bought in 1991. About 4 years ago I replaced it with a flat screen and moved that Sony, unused, to the floor of my guest house. It sat there in the way accumulating more junk around it until October of this year. I finally had to get rid of it because I needed the room to store my son's stuff while he is away for two years for work.

I don't know why, but when I see your old TV it is clearly junk to me. (I mean no offense!) But my TV, which was identical to yours, never seemed like junk at all. In fact to get rid of it I had to donate it to Goodwill because in the back of my mind it's the same $1000 TV I bought in 1991 and it's not junk.

Your thread (with a little bit of necessity thrown in) helped inspire me to clean out the guest house. I must have filled up a dozen large trash bins (I blame most of the junk on my wife.) and donated as much. All that **** sat there for six years doing nothing for us, except making us curse any time we had to go out there for something.

I shouldn't interrupt the work to post, but your post got to me. (I get email notifications on my phone from the thread). I have been tripping over that TV (Also a 27") for many years because it originally cost over $500.00 and it still works and I could use if on cable (If I had cable) or for a closed circuit TV security system or...............???
Well, it has a cracked case that is coming apart and today will go in the dumpster by nightfall.

And I have contacted the very nice guy from Swisstrax and in the spring, when this is all cleaned up..........!!!

I will have to photo and document the "Great Little Garage".......a successor to the "Grunge Garage"!

Bill, I am glad to see that you are making more progress than talk these days. I do admit that I had become a naysayer at one point in time and even one who had no faith that things would ever be accomplished.

That being said... It seems like things are clicking more and more for you. Keep up the good work.

Great Little Garage... by spring. Great little deadline that you have given yourself.

Hey Bill,

It's been a while since I've posted. I've been quietly watching and riding the waves of emotion. I'm glad to see steady progression. Posting pictures is great for accountability. Plus, it sounds like you have quite the motivation now... The flooring is a great incentive but personally, I find the unspoken acknowledgement to yourself of your progress AND your vision and determination to have things in order by next Thanksgiving (that you would openly speak of hosting it to family) as pure awesomeness. That's not to say you won't be able to show off a cool garage floor either!

Keep at it. You can do it.
