Here's a vintage Genuine Norlund rock hammer that I recently restored. I picked this up last summer off ebay. The head and handle has seen better days. I refurbed the head with some sanding, then a soak in ferric chloride to etch away most of the fine sanding marks and finally a new handle.

This is an old ball pein hammer head from Tor made in the thirties.
Never used (but will be soon :)). Weight 152g.
They only stamped numbers on the heads at this time.

Where do you purchase your replacement handles?
I picked up some from HJE, but they appeared to be 2nds with chips and missing wood.

This place is always causing me work, now I'm going to need to restore my hammers. By the way, does anyone know who made snap on hammers ?

It probably depends on the type of hammer.. for instance I know the dead blows are (were?) made by a company that specialized in them. others... :dunno:

This. When I sold Matco Tools, I got a Blue Point compothene hammer in a shipment. I read on GJ who supposedly makes their ball pein hammers, but I can't recall who it was.

This one is brand new from an old stock.
Do you guys know, Mjölner means "Pulverizer"?
This hammer certainly does that. :D

I posted this pic in the 'big tool' thread. This a 168 ounce Lixie dead-blow. I used a C-note in the pic to show size because it will cost you TWO of those (plus change) to buy one! I have 5 different sized Lixies; we use them in the mold making trade to beat on stuff without damaging it.

I also have an assortment of ball pein hammers, copper hammers, claw hammers, etc.

A Couple I added yesterday:

attachment.php

One is a 10 oz. Maydole BP, one with the skinny flex handle. (not for serious beating..); Not sure of the age but MayDole was in Business for about 130 years, ending in 1957 after a fire. they tried to re-open the plant in 1961 but failed.

attachment.php

They were acquired by Mahew becoming Mayhew-Maydole in 1939, but the hammers retained the Maydole name as Maydole was apparently the largest hammer MFG, (at least during part of their history)

The marking History apparently went like this:

"The early marks will say Maydole, Norwich. Then, Maydole Cast Steel; then, Maydole Made in U.S.A.. After that, Maydole in large block letters, and finally Maydole in script letters."

So this one looks like the second to last marking iteration.

I've been wanting a Brass Tack hammer like this since High School, I just never found one reasonable until now.

G. W Mount, and the patent, only the patent No. is Stamped wrong! it is actually Pat, 2821222!

The non-Magnitized head needs dressing since a PO saw fit to do some heavy hitting or it's REALLY well used.

Thank you for sharing this research, Outlaw. I have a tinner's hammer and a claw hammer made by Maydole and was getting curious about the lineage. :rocker:

A couple of vintage USA made hammers I cleaned up. Not perfect, but better than they were. Nothing like a nice fitting and balanced head with hickory handle, IMO

A 30's Craftsman soft face hammer picked up a few weeks back. The faces are pretty hard. Trying to decide if I want to fool with attempting to replace them. Maybe I should just warranty it. :dunno:

Do you ever use them?

sure. but i don't really do much with old dirty greasy stuff and when i do i wear gloves that i change often. also, ocd mandates that i'm only allowed to use one side of the deadblows. the hf's are for anything old and dirty and the tc's are for new things i don't want to get gunk on that might have come off something old and dirty. with ball peens there are a couple new unused ones in there. mostly just the ones i have multiples of as i got a bunch back when hd clearanced them out super cheap. i also like taking care of my things and it all gets cleaned before it gets put away.

How do you guys store your hammers? Also, where can I find decent handles that have the old slim profile near the head. They seem to be much nicer for work where you aren't beating on something.

You shouldn't cut the top of the handle off flush with the hammer head. Leaving 1/8-1/4 inch above the head strengthens the connection. The "excess" handle material forms a wedge/mushroom that aids in holding the head in place. This is a little trick I learned about half way into my collection. Also, that's a nice collection you have :)
