I found a couple unusual hammers at the swap meet. The first one is a stone mason's hammer I'm told but I don't know it's use or even if that is correct information. The end pieces are inserts that fit in slots about 1 inch deep in the ends of the hammer. I liked the shape. There are no makers on this one though which seems odd for such a nicely sculpted hammer.

The 2nd one is a one sided body hammer that I originally though may have been sculpted from a slice of rail track. However after comparing it to some track I doubt it. It's hand made though and not too uniform at the mid to back section. I polished it up some and it's ready to join the herd.

I found this hammer in a junk pile in a shed at my wife's family farm. It is interesting in that it seems to be factory made, but has noticable flaws on the top surface of both sides. I'm not a hammer expert, so I can't tell you what it is called or what it was for. It seems to be close to a pound in weight.

The handle has been textured, perhaps by hand. Because it is so rusty it is hard to tell what the original finish was, or how well polished. I can find no maker's marks, except the four dots on each side of the head shown in the last photo.

My father-in-law was a logger who also raised cattle and had a cherry orchard. His father was a finish carpenter. I don't know if this hammer is related to any of that. Both died before I met my wife, so I have no knowledge to pass on.

Prov, in the last pic, there seems to be faint letters or numerals to the left? The dots I suspect were owners markings so if it got mixed up in with someone else's tools it's an easy call whose is who's...

I'd say that was for metal forming for light/soft metal.

The faint markings are just scratches, perhaps from the forging dies. I was thinking metal forming, but hoped the GJ crowd would come up with a definitive answer. I was thinking blacksmithing smaller items.

I wonder if this hammer was made in wartime, when cosmetics would be less important than practicality.

It's hard to tell the pics are pretty low-res... Definitely metal working, I can see the need for some basic blacksmithing type work having a cattle ranch / orchard / logging...

I picked up my 9 year old daughter yesterday afternoon from her friends house and instead of going home we stopped by a couple of the local antique stores. I'm pretty sure she loves old stuff and tools as much as me.

We found this little GAM manufacturing hammer thrown in with a bunch of run of the mill old hand tools. When I spotted it and showed her we both knew it was pretty cool and I quickly realized it had something clanking around inside the handle. Obviously found the middle sized screwdriver once the endcap was removed. It actually wasn't until after we left that we realized there was an even smaller one that threaded out and a larger one that made up the bulk of the handle. Also discovered that there is actually one missing when I started googling GAM manufacturing and Lancaster, PA.

The lady attending the shop initially told my daughter $5 but also took the opportunity to give her a quick lesson on haggling and quickly accepted her counter offer of $4. Since we left my little one hasn't stopped talking about her find. I'm already thinking I'll need to buy another off Ebay for me because I'm thinking this one has been claimed.fce66c4232b05a48ffa0dfc558e4ac2c.jpgc2bf22483a09eba75cdfb9fdfdb35b4d.jpg

Iron worker's left a broken back out pin hammer laying around.

Brought it home and gave it a new octagonal Ipe handle.

Not bad for free!

I posted a picture of this hammer as an example of my new electrolysis tank in the Vises thread, and DUTCHGRAY commented on it's somewhat obscurity so I figured I'd throw up a pic here. It was caked in rust when I found it @ my dads house and I figured it would be a good test. I also thought I would try my hand at a new leather replica handle ccfb31dcdd8cc203abd619d3ff6779f8.jpgcd48d55224ce8a12cc41f0e5a47a5c90.jpg20171001_195807.jpg

Extended the life of a Pexto Ball Pien hammer tonight.

Tightened the head, smoothed the handle, glued a chip at the **** end, and gave it a wrap of tarred marlin twine.

Ready to go!

And here's a little different handle treatment.

I like the look of that handle. I generally try something similar but I use Samson lashing cord and do half hitches to create a spiral for the same effect, and a nice grip as well979ec947ff9725d3ae92998bd3fbf7ca.jpg877c9863884d480db620648cfc0a2a10.jpgbfa632cb09f1c31d9b771bb149e2d6e8.jpg

Here is a Chicago basa type hammer head that I acquired earlier this summer. After an overnight bath in Evaporust, it got a BLO treatment.

DSCN4023.jpg

Then it got a handle (from HD) and finally got new hickory faces.

These things are handy when you need to whack metal but in a gentle way.

RIVENNHEWN: Thank you very much.

DRIVES: Thank you as well, I learned how to do that @ work. After tying a Bolen in the rope that connects the anchor chain to the boat. Both tailing ends are lashed back to the rope to eliminate any possible untying. And the very end is lashed to prevent fraying.

Fifty cents. Amazing! That will be a nice addition. I can only imagine the cost of a new one if they are available
New brass hammer prices are ridiculous I was looking all summer at garage sales then within a week I found 2 Proto 1lb'ers, a replaceable brass head 1 lb and a nice unmarked about 3 lb.
All were picked up at great prices, anymore if I see any brass almost anything I buy itda284bbcec40ad0ba192e3cf0ac23703.jpg

Brett & Riv: WELL DONE!!

did you both learn that skill from your dad or a co worker or just learn it on your own?

I went through a spell where I was interested in primitive tools.

Had to learn by trial and error and interweb searches.

Not really a hammer, but an elbow adze I made out of a branch and an old chisel.

Nothing fastening the head to handle other than deer sinew.

Made a few $$ selling it on Ebay.

Two hammer post in one day. Is that some kind of party foul?

Here's a panel beater/ assembly mallet I turned last weekend.

It a hunk of Lignum Vitae I got at the Goodwill store for a buck(score!!!)

I added a steel pipe at the end, fitted tight and pressed on in the vise.

The handle is some Elm I cut up a while back.

I picked up this Proto 1431 brass head and aluminum handle hammer at an estate sale for a $1. I put it in my basket without looking at it much, looking at it later I found the Indianapolis 500 markings on the other side. This was used on the knockoff hubs on the wheels on Indy 500 cars to loosen and tighten them.

Hammer toofer!

I got a large mattock handle at HD and used it to rehandle the hammer a few posts up. It was waaaay too long and I cut it at about a foot. Then I used the rest of it to rehandle another head I had around.

Once I turn some hickory faces, this brute can sit anywhere he wants in the shop.

Saving the re-handling of these for when I'm bored and stuck inside this winter. Gave them both a 48 hour vinegar bath, a good scrubbing, and a light coat of Rotella (it was handy) to keep flash rust at bay.

Atha 2.5 lb sledge and a Pexto English-pattern claw, guessing 16-20 oz. I think I'm going to try BLO for a finish.
