Is there a way to detach the locking mechanism on the Top Chest so the drawers won't lock when the top is closed? It would be more convienent for me to not have to open the top in order to open the drawers. thanks.

Yes, look for the plunger mechanism and disable it. You might have to bend or cut it. I bet HF has the tool to do that. :D

Yes, and without any cutting or bending.

  1. Disconnect the gas lifts from the lid and support it straight up. Don't let it go back too far or it will bend the locking bars.
  2. Use a pin punch to, well, punch out the pins that connect the locking bars to the lid.
  3. Tilt the lid back a bit farther until you can remove the locking bars completely by pulling them straight up.
  4. Remove the bottom drawer, throw the locking bars underneath, put the drawer back.
  5. Remember where you put them if you ever want to be able to lock them again.

The 56" doesn't "seem" to be as rigid. For the same money I'd buy two of the 13 drawer units. Then have a custom bent aluminum top made to span them both. That way you wouldn't need any top box that is hard to see into the TOP of - just add a side drawer box if you need more drawers.

Two 13 Drawer units - $800.00 {the current "Sale" price I see is $399.99}
The iPad I just bought was $700.00....

Hummm.... wonder who is making the most money...:headscrat

Just a though.. or two..

I got the OK from the wife over the weekend and finally bit the bullet!

IMAG0195.jpg

Just an FYI, on a compact pickup bed (in my case a 99 tacoma), the pallet will hit the wheel wells in the bed so the guys at the store were nice enough to strap the two together and wrap them and we just put them behind the wheel wells.

The tool chest are SUPER HIGH QUALITY in my opinion, they blow the $1000 craftmen units i have out of the water! They are also SUPER heavy. Me and a buddy of mines had a super hard time getting it off the truck, in fact, we sorta just "dropped" it off the truck slowly and they didn't sustain any damages at all. Even the lock felt way better quality than the craftman. Overall, LOVE THEM! would definitely buy 2 more if I had the room for them.

I just got my big box from Harbor Freight and very happy with the investment, however I told them to take out the packaging and the crate because it would be a pain in the *** to get out of my dads truck.

Anyone have a saved screen shot from where your cart showed the 15 or 20% off for the 13 drawer tool box? I'd like to print one out and give it a try at my local store ...

Have you read any of this Thread?

There is a coupon in some of the Motocycle Related Magazines - that prices the 13 Drawer at $359.99 That's about the best one can do at this point.

Just in case everyone did not realize it - If I understand it correctly - If you have already purchased the 13 Drawer with the last 30 days - - You could get the coupon from the Motor Cycle Related Magazines this month - which price the 13 Drawer units at $359.99. Take the coupon to the store along with your receipt - and get the lower price. {refund if you paid more than the $359.00}.

On two tool boxes - that's an extra $80.00 off the Sale Price of $399.00. You may have to take the coupons in one at a time... as they have a limit of one per day and or 5 per Customer.

The least expensive magainze that contains the coupon is $5.95... so best if you find a friend that gets the magazine... Or perhaps a local motorcycle dealer that has it in their waiting room etc. Even if you have to buy a couple of magazines - you still save $70.00 on a purchase you have already made.

Yes I have :shoot5: ... was wanting to see if I could do a screen shot for $319.99 and try that ... I'm well aware of the $359.99 deal and will go that route if needed ...

I think I understand what you're wanting to do. Those % off your order coupons are labled in store only and state they can't be used on tool cabinets.

Several pages back there were some online coupons in which people were getting them to apply to their cart and giving additional savings to the sale price of the tool box ... Harbor finally fixed the loophole ... No biggie ...

I stopped by my local Harbor Freight yesterday and they still have the old style tool box both on display and according to the employees in the crates ... but who knows ...

Hope I can find a newer style or two soon ...

Anybody else's HF lock the display box now. You can't even test the drawers out :headscrat

I've tested them out in the past before they locked it, but still, makes no sense.

My HF locked the drawers and lost the key... then I bought the display at a great discount

Yeah, they lock them at my HF as well. I wanted to check the drawer slide and they never did come back with the keys...

I bought a display box several years ago from Sam's (like Costco). They had two of the three keys. I called the manufacturer and they said that they would sell me a complete set of locks for $50.00. I'm a DIY and there's not much traffic in my garage so I don't lock it. In fact I found the paperwork for the box the other day and the keys were still in the bag...

The way I have the garage arranged you have to come ALL the way into the garage to see the box so anybody passing by can't even see that I have a large box.

I was at my local HF store today, and was actually offered one of the 349 coupons. I already picked one up on ebay for 2 bucks...We had a fun time sliding the box on the pallet into the side door of my Sienna, but it fit and made the trip home in one piece. I also picked up a side drawer assembly for this box on ebay tonight for 40 BUCKS!

That is good news. I'll keep watching for it then. I need four boxes, so that's a $40 savings over the $359 coupon I have now.

I didn't even realize that the drawer designed change and I have the older version.

I like the newer design drawer better.

I picked up another one of these yesterday. I think the old design drawer feels sturdier. Mine feels a little flimsy but it may be because the drawers are new and a little hard to open. I tried to buy the store display which was the old design but they wouldn't cut a deal and one of the drawers was broken and the lock was missing.

I think it's funny when they do that.

Smart business would be to figure out what it cost them to manufacture and ship it to the store, then add a small profit and lower the price from retail so you'll buy it.

They told you they'd rather you buy a new one than help them be profitable on one that's probably going to cause a loss when it finally sells.

Businesses are really dumb some times.

sorry didnt read all 65 pages about this box.

I just got a new garage and have a corner spot where these would fit nice, I was thinking about getting 2 of these boxes and make a table out of them.

Has anyone done that before? Can they take some abuse from above, being a table?

Any pics of anyone's table top setups?

My setup would be in a corner so it would be an L shape table.

Yes, yes, and yes. You are going to have to go back through the 65 pages... :)
You don't have to read them, just scan for pictures. Or use the thread search above.
