HF just sent an email with the top box for $269. Is the top box as good as the 13 drawer bottom?

Now 245 lbs. The current coupon (November 2013) states that the box weighs 245 lbs.

Was 306 lbs. The previous coupons (Summer 2013) stated that the box weighed 306 lbs.

Wonder if in addition to raising the price over the last 3 years (from $271 to $369 on sale), if they also cheapened the materials. The current box may not be the value that the previous box earned a name for itself as.

Also, previous coupons stated the limit was 5. Then 4. Now, the current limit is 3.

Interesting observation :scared:
I wonder if anyone on the board has first hand experience with both the new and old units.:headscrat

Probably an error? When I look up the product info page on archive.org for March of 2013 it has the product weight listed at 245 lbs
http://tinyurl.com/pfrza5x

it is possible they are calling it a "shipping weight" and have padded the product weight to include the pallet and crate, etc.

I bought one of these in the spring and another one recently and they seem the same to me side by side. The detents were set slightly differently (adjustment), but the materials seem the same. The new one was manufactured in September of 2013 according to the box.

Also, I do not remember the thread, but someone measured the steel thickness between the older style rough finish box and the new gloss and it was discovered that the steel was actually a tiny bit thicker in the gloss version. it may be that the steel is the same, but the difference in paint may account fore this.

The drawer slides and casters I believe have been downgraded from the "original" version, but I do not have an original crinkle finish version to compare to.

All I know is they need to make these in green!

Both of the ones I bought a couple days ago were marked 306 pounds on the sides of them...

Daveo... do you mind proving if John 3:16 is correct?

Not the scripture verse... the poster above you.

His theory is that the 306 lbs that HF advertised on the older coupons (this past summer, as seen in images posted several pages ago on this thread) is the shipping weight, including the pallet, box, and packing. The 306 lb. weight mark on the side of your boxes supports this.

But, what has not yet been proven is how much the actual tool box alone (with casters and handle) weighs without the packing.

Do you mind weighing one of yours, to see if it is indeed 245 lbs? I'm asking you, since you just got two, in the hopes that you haven't gotten around to filling up the second one yet. But if anyone else who has an empty one wants to weigh in, I think a lot of members and lurkers would appreciate knowing the actual weight of the box itself.

There is no way the packaging weighed 61 pounds! 10 at best

checked my boxes and they each have a sticker on the back which gives the total load capacity, as well as each drawer capacity. It is the same between the two rollers (one purchased in spring and one manufactured in September and purchased in October). I don't see how they could remove 60lbs of structure from this box without reducing load capacity.

My top chests have stickers that state the weight as being 142lbs and the load capacity of 559lbs. The website does not give you the weight for the top chest.

I wish we could still get them for $271.99.

I've got a booklet with coupons good through Dec 31 2013 for some of the cabinets HF sells.
The 44" bottom coupon is for $359.99. The top is $269.99
5 drawer cart $164.99
56" roller cabinet $699.99

I'll be using all of them soon.

They did change the weight ratings. I believe this happened when they changed the slides and casters. The total weight of the box did NOT change with relation to the capacity though. The capacity ratings were changed quite a while ago, but the question is whether the total weight of the boxes available today is less than ones that were available in the spring.

Here is an example:
https://web.archive.org/web/2012110...drawer-gloss-red-industrial-uality-68784.html

This is an archived snapshot of the product page from 11/7/2012. It lists the shipping weight at 302 lbs, but as you can see the capacity is still 2633.

SO based on this should we expect that the product went from 302 to 245 with no change in capacity rating? To me..... no. It's the same box.

yes the casters and slides were a bit better on the crinkle finish version, but other than that I believe it's just the paint that is different.

What do you think about fastening two of these boxes together? I realize I'd need to change the casters on one of the boxes to have four swivels so in total there would be 3 sets of swivels and 1 pair of fixed bet went he two boxes. Could put a butcher block counter top on top of both or a steel plate.

I got one of these today, went around the back of the store to load up, i asked the guy if he had any discount/damaged stock.
I got the 13 drawer chest for $215 and the side hanging drawers for $113
Pretty stoked
great thread, great ideas. Thanks for all the pics and inspiration

Seriously - good deal on the damaged one.

I just got one of these bad boys home... well, bought it a week ago, just got it unloaded. They loaded it into the back of my Dodge minivan from a fork lift. I would not suggest any smaller a vehicle.

I had ordered a slightly smaller HomeDepot special -- no comparison. This is a tank.

Glad I bought it before our CDN dollar slipped even further.

I called the two locations just over the border for the cabinet and a generator. Amherst confirmed both. From all I read here it did not seem like it would be a problem to get the cabinet loaded in the minivan, but when I showed up they were not sure -- so make sure you confirm the loading too. The young guy driving the fork lift seemed pretty nervous loading a minivan.

Edit - Just noticed my "join date"... I've been looking at this cabinet for 3 years!

I'd like to see someone throw some 56" cabs together.

If you can wait a few weeks I should be able to show what that looks like, at least done in a workbench, hutch and corner cabinet style. I have one set of benches done, one small corner cabinet and am finishing up a tall corner cabinet and the hutch over the next few weeks. I had to take a break from the project as I am welding up a few "Lista" style storage units I needed done first.

Definitely post that set up. If I had the space and money for something big, I'd go for it.

Currently at 389. Is this as low as they are going now? Don't mind waiting for them to go on a deeper discount but if this is as low as they might as well pick one up.

I finally went to pull the trigger on the 44 in lower box but the workers at HF said it wouldn't fit in my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I asked how they knew and if they tried it before? The worker said no but that the only way to load it was with a fork lift therefore it wouldn't work. Needless to say they just didn't want to help me load it up. I'll just take my $400 somewhere else where they don't mind lending a hand to paying customers. Now I just have to find somewhere else where I can get a quality 44 in toolbox for $359 +tax. :lol_hitti

Go back and tell them you know someone who fit it into an Outback and they're much smaller. Hope you can get it. Love mine.

Go speak with a manager. If I can fit a 56" roller uncrated in the back of a 4 door s10 blazer AND still close the tailgate, I'm pretty sure a 44" will fit in a jeep, even though it is a little smaller.

It's probably more they don't want to mess up your jeep than if it will fit. I would not be surprised if the manager only allows loading into a truck bed with a forklift.

Great advice fellas!

Honestly, I'll be heading back up there here in the next week or so when I catch another break from school and work. The box just gets too good of reviews and is a great buy for the money for me to go somewhere else and pay double the money. And at the end of the day not all HF workers hate their lives, so I should have no problem once I speak with the manager. I'll definitely be calling ahead of time this time around though to make sure the manager is in.

Maybe so, but that don't mean it won't fit and they can't hand load it. The Hand loaded my 56" topper
