Some yutz bought all 3 of the 13-drawer base cabinets yesterday from the Grand Rapids, Michigan store....

Can you post pics of your base setup?

Can't really without emptying it again and turning it upside down. I just made a simple rectangle that fit in the underside of it and drilled/tapped for 4 small casters. The frame I made is entirely under the side cabinet. Could easily do the same with a few pieces of 2x4 too... I wanted this separate from my toolbox, but wanted it mobile too...

from which magazine did you get the coupon?

Car Craft, Hot Rod, Popular Hotrodding, Home shop Machinist etc. I think somebody even said Maxim had one recently.
Just drop by the magazine rack and start looking. Usually the mags have an advertiser's index in the back, that'll save alot of searching.

this thread never ceases to die. it almost reminds me of the gladiator cabinet thread.

i'm doing my best to hold out on buying one of these on the off chance i'd catch a deal on us made box. i guess i have until the 25th to find something but it's not looking good.

looks like the sale is over on these bottom boxes. Has anyone looked at this set that they currently have on sale:

I need a spare box for tools in the house.

My buddy was interested in this box, but after inspecting it a little, I told him to stay away.

It's one of those things that, if you look at it too hard, it might fall apart...:wtf:

that's what I was wondering. I like the crinkle finish on the HF boxes, I hate the shiny black crapsman box I've got that looks dirty if I fart upwind of it....

I was interested in this box. They had one on display. After examining it I passed. I think if you want to store fly tying materials or something extremely light weight you could use this as a good organizer but add 2 screw drivers and a ratchet and you will overwhelm the sliding drawers.

Does anybody know if harbor freight has a mid-chest (2-3 drawers) available? The pictures of the assembled set in the coupon above show a 2 drawer mid chest. I have a craftsman rolling cab and top chest and need a mid chest. I looked on the hf website but cannot find a separate item listing for the mid chest.

Thanks.

Kept meaning to make an introduction post for my first post, but now I have a question. Love this place.

Anyway, has anyone looked at the stainless HF boxes? The red ones are a great deal, but I can't get on board with the ugly red crinkle finish.

The drawer configuration of the stainless boxes are a bit different, and the load capacity is less than for the red ones.

note:
I have the 41" Cman box and the 42'' HF box
the HF box is just a little wider than the cman so a HF top or mid will not fit neatly onto the cman bottom

Went to buy one of the 13 drawer bottom roller boxes today and out of stock so had them issue me a rain check. If your store is out, just ask for a rain check and buy it later for the same sale price.

I just picked up my bottom box. With the sale and 20% off coupon it was about $303 out the door. I got it home and unpackaged. I didn't think they would pack them so well but they actually did a good job. Mine only had one small thing wrong. One end of the top drawers silver handle is a little bent, but I'm not caring as you can't touch another cabinet for the price.

Now I just have to unload everything from my cheap Craftsman box to this one.

Don't forget to save the emblem from your cheap Craftsman box. So you can put it on your new box. Seems to be the new trend.

I took that back off. I just wanted to cover the epoxy before I painted it.

In a perfect world, I wouldn't have any corporation's logos on display in my garage. Once I buy it, it's mine. Right?

I bought a 3 pack of craftsman emblems for mine- but then decided to make some Proto emblems since the HF and Proto boxes look so similar, so thats whats on mine now.

I had a brain fart today. I have been hell bent on not buying Chinese stuff. Then I thought - most of the chinese stuff is stuff that is manufactured for companies in the United States and other "free world" countries... So if I buy chinese, then I'm supporting American companies right ?? That's a good thing, right?? If so, it comes back around to buying quality stuff - no matter where the label says it's made right ???

Am I off track here? I promise I have not been drinking today.

Yes and no. You are supporting the American companies that sell it of course, but at the same time validating their decision to move production overseas thereby eliminating manufacturing positions for American employees, increasing unemployment and contributing to the decline of our economic base. Personally, I go for quality wherever it may be produced, on the assumption that an equilibrium will be reached at some point between nations. Also that improving conditions in these other nations will lead eventually to fewer wars and we will all be better off, or at least our children will.

In this case. I think you are supporting a retailer that bases it's entire existence on sub-par chinese ****. Defend your purchases all you want. I've bought there and have never been really impressed. It all falls back to you get what you pay for I guess.

Something to add to your thoughts. The Chinese stuff is shipped over here on a boat. Unloaded by American Union Longshoreman. So you are keeping them employed. It is then transported by American Truckers, maybe they are independent or teamsters, it does not matter, they are Americans and they pay taxes just like you and me and that keeps them employed. The truck driver has to have maintenance done on his truck and he stops at truck stops to by gas and food and guess who serves him. Americans.

There are some items at Harbor Freight, like their tool box that I can not justify buying the American brand because the price is too high. If I don't buy HF then I do without. If I do without then look at all the folks that do not get to work.

Consider the folks that work at HF or any other discounter like Walmart. They are Americans and the money they make may go to pay the mechanic that owns nothing but Snap on and American made tools to fix their car yet he that refuses to buy from their store. Kinda funny if you think about it.

very well put

If harbor freight couldn't buy from overseas the company wouldn't exist and they couldn't employ US workers. There are 2 Harbor Frieghts in my area and they are always packed. Seems like a good idea to me. Quality might **** but my friend who is a union tradesman buys a ton from them because if he buys the nice stuff it will get stolen from other union tradesman.

Just went this afternoon with my friend who has a full size pick'em up and we each picked up one of the bottom boxes (last two in the store).
While they were loading up the boxes, I went back inside and used another 20% coupon to pick up a "quick-open" handgun safe. It was a good day!

I guess someone could rationalize further by claiming that spending money at HF gives the Chinese government more money to lend the US (with intrest) to keep our failing economy afloat another day.

Here it is from another angle figuring Harbor Freight, or made in china never really started and everything was still made here:

There were a heck of a lot of mechanics who made a living before Harbor freight existed and customers had no problem paying the bill because they had good american jobs and could afford to pay the bill.

I never had any problem buying tools and stuff before Harbor freight opened. I bought them from stores that are now put out of business because people go to harbor freight. So the people who currently work at harbor freight would have worked in the stores that they put out of business, so that is a wash.

The same truck drivers would deliver the american products so I guess that is a wash.

The longshoreman would probably be working shipping and receiving at all of the american companies and I bet allot more would be needed.

The boats that take the stuff over here are all foreign owned so those jobs don't count.

Now lets add additional jobs that would be created it the product were made in america.

The factory workers who make the product

All of the people who work a the factory/company. ie. secretaries, managers, Janitor, maintenance crew, mail room boy, cafeteria staff, the list goes on.

The factory loading dock people who unload the raw materials that go into making the product.

The truck drivers who bring the raw materials to the factories.

The people who process the raw materials.

The utility companies employees who provide, electric, water, gas, sewer, etc to the company.

I'm sure I missed a bunch, but I think this is enough.

Everyone feel free to chime in with additional American jobs that were lost when everything started getting imported from China.

They say, to date, 800,000+ jobs related to manufacturing have been lost. When the UAW and the politcians actually endorsed NAFTA years ago claiming "free trade" was going to be good for Americans....well, I guess that didnt work out so good.
But big business and certain coroporate executives got very, very, very rich outsourcing our jobs...and continue to do it to this day. HF and the tool business isnt the first industry to go away. Look at the electronics industry, textiles, aerospace, etc, etc.
Your politicians continue to take pocket money to vote the way these companies (and countries) TELL them to vote. Thats the reality.:(

Why on earth would you put Proto emblems on a Harbor Freight tool box? That's like putting Cadillac emblems on a Yugo.
