Went to get pallets today and they had been stolen, so no work on the shed today.
So instead we went to Conasauga and cut bamboo to stake the tomatoes!
20230613_114139.jpg
Got all 71 plants staked.

While Josh and I worked on the tomatoes, Haley picked some beans!

The cucumber trellises!

Things are really starting to grow.
We also planted five more rows of beans while we were at it.

Larry, The bamboo was free, that was the driving force behind that decision, they were around 15' long when we cut them.
Tony, there are two families doing this garden, we both want to can tomato juice and sauce and eat our fill, I hope I planted enough.
I'm going to feed the birds and get back to the kitchen and help Pat start canning beans.

That's a great garden. Mine is so hap hazard.
To make sure I get tomatoes, I pollinate them with a tuning fork.

I have never heard of that. Could you please elorbate.
The idea behind is how bees get the pollen out of the flowers. They use their wings and vibrate the flower. It shakes the pollen loose.
There are a couple methods to artificially do this. One way is to use a tuning fork in the key of C. Although, I don't know if the key of C is really necessary. The other way is to use an electric tooth brush without the brush on it.
I prefer the tuning fork. It's much more Zen. Especially in my bathrobe. You can see the pollen being blown out of the flower in the picture. I attached a ZIP file of a slow motion movie of the method.

Lenny thank you, that was very cool, I didn't expect the pollen to shoot out that fast.
I saw a video a couple of days ago where a man touched the seed stem of a plant and it triggered a rapid fire of seeds shooting everywhere, sometimes nature can be so interesting.
I'm looking at adding bee hives next year, we have plenty of room for them, and I love sour wood honey!

Around me there is a plant called Shot weed that will have exploding seed pods if you touch the plant when the pods are ripe. If you pick the weeds before they are ripe you are good to go but if you wait too long they explode while you weed and you are spreading the seeds of the next generation of shot weed. I tend to put things off but I always try to beat those Shot weed from getting ripe.

Nice work canning those beans! I was impressed by that 5 gal bucket.

I I spent the day in the shop, I'm trying to get a quail cage built before they fly away!
20230615_130051.jpgabout two or three days they will be able to fly out of this water tank so I got busy.
20230615_135552.jpg
I wasn't real sure what I was going to do, I watched a couple of YouTube videos that weren't very helpful, but I started forming an idea of what I wanted.
20230615_135600.jpg
I know for sure that I want pan's to catch the poop, I don't want to spend a lot of time cleaning poop, so these will support the poop pans.
20230615_154942.jpg
I made two uprights, they are six ft. tall and 20" deep, there will be two cages in this rack, there is room to add a third cage to the bottom but I don't think I want to bend over that far so no Bueno!
20230615_163654.jpg
I left the pan runner's long, I'm not sure if the pans will be 20" or 24" yet, I'll let you know when I know!
I had to quit here, my new neighbors, the Mlackers bought the house across the road from me, and turned the house into an Air B&B rental, who knew I live in a vacation destination area!!! Anyway they still live in up state New York for now, but they had some patio furniture delivered to my place.
20230615_183338.jpg
I assembled it and put it on there deck.
20230615_183400.jpg
It is rented out for the next three nights and the listing says it has patio furniture.
20230615_183353.jpg
So now it has patio furniture!
My Son and his family are coming down from Chicago in July, and the Mlackers gave him the house to use while they are here so I call fair deal on this one. I live in the best neighborhood in the world! Now my GJ friends can rent the Air B&B next to me and party in the Mountains ⛰️.
So now I'm tired, beer30 was a long time ago and there are screwdrivers in the fridge so, see you soon!

Looking like we'll be passing through your area on 10-17, Jim.
Won't have time to stay in the Air BnB, but might have time for a quick visit, if your schedule allows.
We'll be coming from Black Rock Mountain state park on our way to Goodlettsville.

Got to work on the quail cage for a couple of hours today.
20230619_151516.jpg
I started making the poop pans.
20230619_160102.jpg
Then I made a floor panel.
20230619_160112.jpg
The floor is four inches deeper than the cage, and is tilted two inches higher in the back, this allows the eggs to roll out into the extra four inch piece for easy collecting, a lid will be added!
I need to make three more pans and one more floor, then I can start on the fronts and end panels.

Got to spend a couple of hours working on the quail cage, too many adult things have been going on and cutting into my work time.
20230620_134633.jpg
I have worked out a feeder idea, this will let me fill there feed from the outside.
20230620_160028.jpg
This is the lower cage, I made a block off plate for the hole so the birds cant fly away while the feeder is being cleaned. The plate will fit both holes.
20230620_134626.jpg
There will be a cap to keep mice out.
Today I'm going to work out the waterers.
