Well another one off my list.
Pat is moving furniture to make room.
Now I'm starting on this foot stool.
We found it a couple of years ago and she wanted it to go with her living room suit.
It's a mess, the glue joints failed and as usual someone got out the hammer and nails and thought they were a furniture repairman!
I have about 5 or 6 wood projects that I want to get out of my shop so I hope y'all are in!

Jim, I hate to admit it, but we were through Cleveland today.
Our schedule just didn't allow a stop.
Something about a great grandma and a 2 year old great grand baby...
Hopefully, one of our trips will allow us to visit.
I even have a qt of some special "medicine" for you!

I have the base glued back together, plumb, level, and square.
I'm rethinking how I'm going to do the rest of it, I'm thinking about scrapping the springs, horse hair and cotton. I'm thinking about cutting an insert of plywood then stack semi ridged foam on that and a gel pad top layer! What do y'all think?
Started a fire this morning, it was cool in here,
but I left the shop door open so I can watch the leaves change.

I did a little more gluing on the foot stool frame today, I put the chunks that the nails broke out back in.
So while it is drying I started on the next piece,
It's rough but not as bad as the last two projects.
It's a Hoosier cabinet that I bought Pat many years ago.
It has too many coats of paint on it to see all of its problems.

Love the Hoosier. Had one at home in my youth, don't know where it ended up. But I'm already thinking powder coat for the sifter!

The projects have been here, just cooling off and the yard work finally slowed down, I have been mowing three lawns most of the summer totalling about 5 acres!

They had a place for everything a women needed to cook, the hoppers were for flour and meal. They had an enameled counter top for rolling dough. Rumors say they came from Indiana, hence the name.

I got Josh's parts back from powder coat today.
I wanted to do this a year ago but Josh wanted to use it for a while to see if it needed any changes, we'll it didn't, he has to be in Sevierville on Monday to film a documentary for the outdoor channel so naturally it had to be done now. I'm trying to finish the back porch for Thanksgiving. I realized today that I'm at the height of the holiday season for getting stuff ready and I'm so behind
. We're going to the Turkey shoot in the morning at 8:00, then finish the light wiring on the Ranger, then I have a fellowcraft degree at 6:00 pm at the lodge, probably won't move on sunday!

I got the wiring finished on Josh's truck.
I added insulation where it needed to be.
It should be OK for a while.

I been working on the back porch, trying to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner, we started staying home at Thanksgiving because of mouthy relatives, I think there is going to be 17 of them here for dinner. They know that I will personally toss anyone that runs there mouth out the back door, so now they all want to come to the safe house!
We drove up to Pikeville Monday to pick up a shower stall for the cabin, it's about an hour trip up the plateau, that's a picture of it. It's a beautiful ride, as you come around a curve you can see all the way down in the valley, I would like to be able to pull over and get a pic but there is no way to get off of the road up there.

It's 77° today so I got the table saw out and started cutting blocking to go in the bottoms of the cabinets.
I know Pat so I'm adding blocking to the bottoms, she has about 30 cast Iron skillets
in one in the house.
I have the upper cabinets mounted and she already has them full, now I'm scribing cleats to the floor, the concrete is horrible, who ever poured it never intended for it to be finished to this level.
Hoping to be done with this part by Friday!

I had errands to run today so not much shop time, my QST is way off these days.
I did get the second coat on this cabinet.
This paint is real tricky, it's so thick that a stick will stand up and not fall over, but just a dab too much water to thin it and it runs off the cabinet, I sanded a couple of runs off this cabinet.
While I was running errands in Chattanooga, I stopped at Southeastern Salvage and looked at there counter tops, they have 11 Honey Acacia butcher block tops that are 144" long, I need 137", they were at 375.00 +tax, I stopped at Cleveland countertops on the way home, he said they were slow and could do a formica top, custom fit for 264.00 out the door in one week!
I have to think about it!

Jim, we have a beautiful acacia salad bowl. I don't think I could pass up a 12-foot countertop made of that wood for that price. Lowe's sells a 6-foot one for $259. Formica counter tops are very practical but I don't stare at the Formica butcher block one in my garage like I would at a real one. I know it's more maintenance but boy does real wood look nice.

Bob, I have to agree, I saw the acacia top in person, it's beautiful. They had some in a honey finish and some in a mocha finish, mocha is too dark! I'm still thinking.

It’s been a while since I’ve checked in and happy to see you’re still kickin.
Just curious if you ever found the best solution for keeping water and moisture out of basement and crawl space? I’m trying to fix my parents 95 year home basement water issue and I know if I dig down 6 feet around 2 sides and attack outside of wall and add gravel and maybe French drains and paint that would be best but I might end up under the dirt doing that job.
Take care and keep kickin

Drives, it's always good to hear from you.
I did win the water battle in my basement, it was a combination of things.
The brick in the pic is the stairs going to the basement, the other side of the stairs is the wall of the coal room,
the coal room is under the patio! they were completely made of brick, even the treads, as you may have guessed all of the mortar between the brick had turned to dust. I dug out many of the brick, did some hydraulic cement patching to the interior wall, then rebuilt the steps with concrete. I still need to stucco the wall!
At the top of the stairs was the coal door!
I cut out the patio level and exposed the top of the coal room.
I also cut the cracks in the patio and filled all of the cracks and coal door with concrete and hydraulic cement.
But now Pat has a dry finished basement and canning kitchen.
It was a mess to do, and there is a matching staircase going up the front side that is about half finished also, hopefully I'll finish this in the spring then I can stucco everything and pour a slab outside the basement door!
Probably nothing like your battering but water in the basement is no fun. Best of luck, keep me posted!

Well Halloween is over so Pat is making pies!
Can't get any closer to homemade than that.
I did save the seeds to grow more for next year.
The chickens got the scraps. Pat has one more pumpkin to skin next week.
Then Josh just showed up with more meat to can.
475 lbs of bear to dress out tomorrow!
There goes the back porch plans!

How is and what does bear meat most compare to?
I'm mostly just familiar with deer, elk and bird species. When we go to Florida I'll get alligator at the restaurants.

It's a very subjective meat, most people don't know how to prepare it and it comes out gamey and musk like, not very good. I'm fortunate to know two men that can make it tast like a deep beef roast, I have seen people eat Josh's bear meat and thought they were eating beef roast, the same with Jeff T. They know what there doing.
Pat has taught Josh and Haley how to can it and after a couple months in a jar it's even better.
My dog box all assembled and in full use mode!
