Even better that the hoist has a fixed load not subject to operator abuse. I got in a hurry on a large job of 4 inch pipe and was going so well got distracted and burned a chop saw up. I broke a couple things over the years, pretty much all **** with manual control where I did it incidental. A couple 4 1/2 grinders which didn't suffer from low voltage, hell we saw a case here run 7 1/2 comp just fine for 18 years on a 12 cable 50 ft, guy only found out from here it didn't look right. Didn't burn the place down, ha, wire sposed to be a 6.

I am pretty code compliant and cant think of anything I may change cause I got a better idea. I don't lose any sleep putting my Buds comp on a 10 cable wired to a 30 in his garage or my own for that matter. I understand it is what it is but no one ever burned the joint down from it. I think they got a way around it now to fall in that class?? Don't lable it HP,,, ha/.
I think that there are a couple deals where we are sposed to up the ground if for V drop which makes the use of a cable a problem. Wonder if a guy was to say the welder needs a 10 but I want to use a 6 for drop I should increase the ground wire?
Heck want to get rid of it all hard wire it to it. Breaker would probably qualify as the disconnect if it was local.

You do know that the guy that emailed the clerk is the same who 2 weeks ago came to a DIY forum to argue the code was faulty for allowing 15 amp switch and recept on a general circuit.
That's just the start of the gems in this thread.
The op was really right to ask for electrician help or he worded the question wrong. Should have asked for 3 engineers didn't know wtf they doing.
Even the op understands its not going down on thermal. If they now say it goes on a 20 it still sposed to have a 12 feed wire and a 14 whip. The problem here is too much start current, changing out the wire is not going to help and only hurt. Its going to allow more inrush. There is no danger of overheating this with a wire dedicated to it.
Same is some other motor cases for example, unless there is some compelling reason due to distance the installer follows the instruction in regards to wire size on an AC for example.
If it trips now thru a 14 cord changing it to a 12 will let it trip that much faster, this is really my point in the whole thing,,, basically some genius rushing off to tell some clerk they don't know squat and they do not fully undertand the problem anyway. Thats my point, its not about a **** hoist aint got a decent manual but tell me how to give advice and don't even know how toi size a cord whip on a motor,,, says it all.

What does that have to do with what the rep at Atlas said about loosing amperage? Lakeroadsters thread has NOTHING to do with this thread.

And u do realize that lakeroadster wasnt the one that said that incorrect statement about amperage.

If you are going to bring this back up at least write it correctly.

There were two threads, one was about the code allowing a switch, clearly labeled 15 amps, on a 20 amp circuit. The other thread was about allowing an outlet, clearly labeled 15 amps, on a 20 amp circuit.

What does that have to do with what the rep at Atlas said about loosing amperage? Lakeroadsters thread has NOTHING to do with this thread.

Man you guys have some stamina!

Threads like this make me quickly look at who's posting most prolifically and then move on....once I see the tail is wagging the dog again, I give up.
