The bench came out great! I love the design.

I have a quick thought on the gap under the boxes. I'm not sure what the height of the gap there is but if its high enough what about some thin roller drawers under there to store flat stuff like saw blades or sand paper? Gives a little extra storage for oddball stuff and keeps the dust and parts from getting under there a bit.

I've been lurking in the forum for a while since I decided to do over my garage. I'm a woodworker and have built several woodworking workbenches. I have to say this is one of the nicest garage workbenches I've seen. Its elegant in its simple, practical and well thought out design and of course beautifully constructed. I'm sure lots of readers will be copying this great design. Congrats on a great project!

This post really got me motivated to begin working on my permanent workbench in my garage. I went to HF today and looked at these 44" cabinets. Up until now, I just walked past these cabinets with my nose up in the air whenever I was in HF but after reading the reviews about the quality of these cabinets, I decided to have a closer look. Ok, so is it me or does the flat finish on these cabinets look sub par? Sitting right beside it was the 56" model which has a nice glossy, clean finish while the 44" cabinet looks like some gang banger took a couple of bottles of Krylon and went to town. Just me?

Yes and no. They actually look better if you hit them with a couple of bottles of Krylon.

Five minutes on each side with a DA and 150 grit to knock the texture down and paint them up. Mine are now navy blue with black drawers. Much better than the crinkle pink finish they come with.

I actually plan to use the cross bars on the ends to store clamps on, rather than cap them off.

I like the idea of a magnetic apron, rather than screwed/riveted/glued in place, because then I can remove it to vacuum underneath.

I'll look into that, thanks for the idea.

I struggled a bit today, trying to decide whether to mount the Columbian swivel base vise or the big Athol on this bench.
In the end, I decided that this bench deserved the Athol.

I might. I made the wood bench that the lathe is on now, but a steel frame would give me a lot more vertical clearance under the bench for a couple of small Craftsman rollaways. It already has the right top material and steel cap like the benches.

11 ga is 1/8" so 12 ga is just a little thinner

I was just pondering that as well. Although its not a complete maximization of the space I thought maybe you put the matching side cabinet at an angle between the two banks of other cabinets. It would extend the bench out a little in each direction but would at least utilize some of that void.

If your technically minded, a couple of electronic rams could be used to raise some shelves out of it.
Or how about putting the bench top in the corner on hinges and placing a bin below it

Looks awesome. I'm planning nearly the same thing but with the boxes spaced from the center 2'. And adding an L shaped door to access the space in the corner.

Steevo if you were close I would hook you up with some nice 2in sq tube for some legs for that lathe bench then you would have to build it just to see you have to go to work cause thats the kind of guy I am.lol

The uprights and cross pieces in the legs are 2"x2"x.120" square tube
The horizontal toolbox supports and surface supports are 1.5"x1.5"x3/16" angle.
That is all it is made of.

perfect answer for the 'void space' in the corner. drop the trash can down there. put a small covered hole in the corner to drop the trash through. then when it is full you lift the whole can out with your forklift.

Have you considered something like roll out bins for under the bench? Granted they would be shallow, but space is space.

I had this image saved (Not mine) that shows an idea that could be dressed up to look pretty nice IMO.

I just wanted to say thanks a ton for sharing this fantastic idea!!! I am really close to finishing a similar style workbench that was 100% stolen from Steevo's build thread.

It had to be a little different as I have no forklift to put my boxes in the frame. Also, there is another one just like this that is the other side of the bench with the top spanning the two of them. Metal top is in the works. I was able to repurpose some tables at work for the feet and stole some parts from a bin for the inserts in the legs. Trying to keep this low buck. Have $99.00 into the two frames and the top so far.
