Plaistow and Salem NH, and Methuen MA turned up nothing this weekend. Seabrook NH and 2 stores in Danvers MA is where I found the nails.

A bunch of nailers that were supposedly in stock, couldn't find anything.

Seabrook NH has 2 Bostitch flooring nailers for $55 if anyone in the area is interested. 1 is a display model with no case or hammer, one is an open box (pretty sure the hammer is in it). I passed on them.

I'd trade someone a different nailer if they need one and go buy one for me.

because it may already be a penny

I guess. I haven't look looked up a single SKU from GJ in over 3 months. It's easy enough to search for clearance. The only SKUs I look up are whatever I find up in the rafters that may be questionable.

If it's a penny item, looking up the SKU is just gonna give you an "item not found", meaning you have no way to know if there's actually anything there.

Struck out today. Thought I found these 2 but nowhere to be found.

Found these but looked cheaply made so I passed.

^ Thx. Been here for most of the week. ;)

If anyone finds the Bostitch N80CB-1 or the Dewalt coil framing nailer, please send a PM my way. I'm ready to trade, or just buy it outright. Same for the Paslode F350-S or the Paslode F325R compact framer.

Only thing I came home with today. I was happy as I needed a shorter level. All the other empire levels that are at clearance price are gone. My regular store that usually has deals was super clean...must have recently done inventory.

So I've learned a lot reading so far, but have a quick question to help me maximize any potential items. Can you just snag one of the store computers and use search term "clearance" and find what the computer thinks is in the store or ?

I sure wish I could get one of those 41" tool chests for $132. Do they clearance items at specific stores due to lack of sales or what? We already determined it's not by region as I would have suspected.

I'm one of the folks that actually needs a few things for the garage. The T8 bulbs I asked about 2 weeks back dropped from $34 to $28 a box but store manager still wouldn't accept my $100 offer for 6 boxes. Strange. I'll keep watching them.

Policy is they have to sell for .01 if that is what it rings up. You need to call the corp number tomorrow, be polite, and tell them what happened.

I had employees tell me no. I asked for the mgr and told them to verify the hd policy as it says they sell items for what they scan for it they ring up cheaper than shelve price. Two minutes later the head cashier comes back and says sell it for .01

Some mgr just give it to you so not to have .01 sales

You are the 2nd person I have read here that as told no by the corp number, First guy I think said he was short and not too nice. I may be wrong though.

Quicker than 2 jiggles of a jackrabbit's ***. Scan it and pop in a penny. Grab your receipt and go. Once you have your receipt, they can't do ****.

This is a bit off topic, but I think it's the right place for it.

Visited two branches of a local pawn shop over the weekend. They stock a huge amount of (massively overpriced) pawned tools, but they also have a small section of unused, brand new stuff. It's pretty clear that all this stuff (Estwing hammers, Ridgid items, Husky hand tools) is coming from HD stocks in large lots. For example, one branch had probably 50 Estwing hammers piled up, priced (of course) at the exact same $ as Home Depot.

Is Home Depot somehow clearancing large amounts of overstock on the secondary market, or is there a chance that they have a deal with the local pawn shops?

Curious if anyone has thoughts or similar experiences.

You also see this a lot at swap meets and flea markets in bigger cities. Personally, I think it's hot merch, but I don't know for sure.

There was a post a few weeks back of a CL ad for random pallets of HD stuff for sale in Cali.

My store does not have computers on the floor for my access...only behind the pro desk is there computers...not quite sure how to play this game...

There's other computers around the store.

- by Garden Center door
- usually a few scattered around in Appliances
- sometimes one in Lighting
- sometimes one for customer use at Customer Service
- sometimes a computer for employment applications near Customer Service

Try any one that isn't behind a desk. If an employee questions you, just say you're checking prices. If they say you can't use it, say you're a contractor. They will walk away.

If that doesn't work, try what I said about giving them your best Jack Nicholson look from The Shining. Heeere's Johnny!

one of the stores by me is that way. The only computers are behind desks (ie no garden center one or one in lighting). But I found just asking and the employees generally let me on the computer. I just tell them I want to look at the details for products instead of just the box on display. As long as an employee didn't need the computer they have always let me use it so far. But that store also tends to have older guys who work there and they are the type who you can actually ask questions about projects and they can answer them instead of the other store by me where its just kids who don't have knowledge of the products

Yes, although that's not the exact method.

Yes, click on each item that pops up.

Hmmmm, ok will look around next time I'm in the store.

I worked for Home Depot for 5 years while I was in college and they didn't do this back then that I remember. They did clearance things and I'd sometimes want to ****** them up but the policy was that it had to be on the floor for some amount of time before an employee could grab it. I don't remember any .01 deals though, but it's been a while

I've had no issues getting access to a computer at the stores. I just walk up like I belong there and start typing and clicking away and say hi to any employees that walk by.

lol just realized the sticker on the mosquito traps were from 2013!

I may have to take another trip and verify these.

I scanned an item at sco that was from February, had a clearance price at 49.03, and an origional price at 65.09 or something like that. Figured since it was so old it would ring up as a penny, but rung up at the origional price. Thought it was weird.

800 C/S *DOES* refuse to sell penny items. It happens every time I call.

Their initial response is *ALWAYS* to back up the store managers, to say that the store manager has the final say, and to decline to help you buy a penny item. That response has become far more standardized in the past couple of months, due to the large number of people who have jumped on the penny hunting bandwagon. Now that there are people who are only going to HD for penny hunts, HD corporate doesn't like it, and they want to put an end to opportunists who come into the store just to "steal" merchandise. In case anyone hasn't noticed -- they've changed the behavior of both the web site and the price-check app while this has been going on. The price check app is now outputting both false positive and false negative results for clearance item searches, and everyone here is scratching their heads about why it's happening, as if it were some sort of coincidence or "misteak".

Without a doubt, HD doesn't like what some people are doing, so they're trying to put and end to it where they can.

That said, I have never left a store without a penny-priced item. It's all about your negotiating skills. Quite frankly, now that I have to negotiate over penny items I don't think it's worth the trouble any more. I'd rather just buy an 03 clearance item go to SCO and be out the door, rather than wasting my time bickering with someone over something just to say that I caught a penny deal. At this point there has to be something I really want or need for me to bother with penny items; otherwise they're just not worth my time.

I don't really bother looking for them either. I'm happy with the 75% off. Usually the 75% off takes enough time to find, nevermind looking for a needle in a haystack (or a unicorn in a Home Depot). I'll take a quick glance around the area for any penny items that are mentioned here, but I don't go crazy with it.

My last penny items were the Porter Cable nails, which I was shocked rang up a penny, since price check said 42 cents, and the Hitachi staples which I knew right away were a penny because Hitachi is non-existent in the stores around here.

I get frustrated arguing with them about them having to sell it for a penny, and at the same time it's kind of embarrassing when other customers are looking at you like a thief

Can someone point me to the definition of the .02, .03, .04 prices as mentioned previously? For example, $28.03 (apparently the .03 means something).

Also, has anyone correlated a rate of price decay on items in clearance? For example if the original price was $39.99 and it's now on clearance for $19.03 is there a way to monitor the price drop to know when to check back for a target price you may have in mind or is it 100% variable?

Posts 1 and 3 say all you need to know. As far as timing the price drops, pretty sure there is no longer a set schedule. It's variable now.

.04 and .06 are 25% off, .02 and .03 are 75% off (for the most part), then they go to a penny.

^^ Read up on the link you shared, thanks. I'm with you and don't really care about getting a penny deal, but 75% off would be great for the things I'm needing.

Like you, I have a hard enough time finding the 75%-off merchandise. To find those deals -- deals that you are supposed to get -- I have to drive my **** off visiting every store in the area. Given that it takes so much effort to find the 75-off items that HD wants you to buy, searching for the penny deals that you are not supposed to get amounts to a ridiculous waste of my time.

I can see how some people become enthusiastic about trying to hunt for the elusive penny deal ... there is definitely a thrill the first time that you get one. but that thrill fades away pretty quickly, given the amount of time that you have to commit to chasing unicorns. To me, penny deals are just not worth the effort unless they're a pleasant surprise on merchandise that I'm otherwise looking for. I just don't have the time to commit to sport-shopping for things that I don't really need. It takes me long enough to find deals on things that I have a legitimate need for.

Going one step farther, hoarding what I find isn't something that I find appealing either. My attempts to trade people here to get what I need have been a bust, selling things on CL is a royal PITA that I want no part of, and I can't get too enthusiastic about ebay either. At this point I just buy what I can use and leave the rest for other people.

The exception, of course, to the "it's not worth my time" condition is when you can land a pallet or two of one SKU. ;) Still kicking myself for hesitating on the nail checkout.
