as far as i'm concerned, as long as the SCO will allow you to buy penny items, there is NO WAY they can tell you they can't sell penny items. Store policy, corporate policy, whatever.

All it takes is one programming statement to stop the transaction.

If (price == 0.01) {
transaction.stop = true;
}

In other words, the stores have no leg to stand on if they tell you they can't sell penny items. Corporate could have had all of these SCO's patched at any point in time but haven't, so apparently they don't give a **** about selling penny items.

Not totally sure but I think they may have a way to set the SCO to pop up with the "please see attendant" screen if something rings up for a penny. Was in a store way away from home two weeks ago, got a pancake dewalt compressor through with no problem.spent a long while browsing Te store Then went back for two moen faucets, a vale and a haysfield. Boom, "please see attendant" popped up. SCO attendant had down sydrome and tried to help me out but I just left the faucets with her. Bought some stuff at last clearance price,.03. Then went back in again for some watts valves that were penny and boom, "please see attendant" popped up again. Ended up getting the valves for 2.55 a piece somehow.

Found the head cashier and told her that the SCO with DS was very helpful and was doing a great job. She asked me to say it in front of the SCO attendant and her face lit up and obviously made her day. Good deed done while penny shopping.
Jake. Screw penny items. I don't even go after them. I've had a few on items I still thought were .03 but that's my goal. I know they write off penny's but it really is kind of a scam.
A good deed like you did is worth more than money. Going out your way to help someone is priceless. Screw what others say. Morality is the basis of humanity.

We'll done Jake!!! Getting penny items is cool but I like the "bigger" message in this story. Something simple man, and you may have made her week,not just her day.:beer:

It was the least I could do. Made her look that much better in her managers eyes and when I complimented her hard work in front of her it obviously made her week. Hopefully helped her out the best I could.

I'm the same way. If I have my receipt then it's mine. Don't care what manager/associate says I'm walking out.

But last night I had a husky 30 gal compressor, model # C301H. That has been on sales floor for awhile with the C302H tag on it for awhile now. So I walk in and get compressor up to check out. Tell check out lady to put in the old model number (C301H, which is what was the model number on side of compressor) and it rang up a penny, of course. Manager is mad as hell (same stor that called the cops on me a month ago.) and denies last clearance price. So I call corp and they tell me that as of 4/15 the policy has changed that if an item rings up as a penny they have to charge last clearance price. Even if it's on the sales floor, as this compressor was. Corp lady tells me that she can sell to me at last price and will get back to me as she talks to the store. Comes back and says she they can't sell to me at last clearance price and that she will get back to me on Wednesday after upper management reviews my case. Either way, MOD took the C301H to the back of the store to take home with him tonight probably.

Too many people called corporate over penny drill bits and pressure washer heads, finally broke the camels backs. Said as of 4/15 the corporate policy has changed. No penny items what so ever. And might sell at last clearance price at managers discretion, but with how 98% of the managers I have dealt with, good luck with that. Corporate will not have your side at all. Even if stuff is supposed to be last clearance price.

Made it clear I would pay the $110.03 for the C301H and the manager and corporate still said they wouldn't sell it to be for any less than $439

Slap a GPS tracker on it before you leave, then setup a web page where we can all track which employees house it goes to

You know how it goes, unless they patch their software at the sco this will continue. If the register allows it then there will always be items slipping thru on cashiers busy or just not paying attention. To me, the worst part would be if most or all managers started refusing to sell at last clearance price. That policy would worry me more. So far except for one instance haven't ran into that around here.

Also sounds like that store got your "number" as they say.Could have trouble everytime you go in there, hope not!

Well it sounds like the fun may be coming to an end for you guys. Hopefully you will still be able to find some good deals in the future. I don't remember ever getting in on any of these deals myself, but I do enjoy reading this thread to see what you all end up with and also to hear the funny stories about angry cashiers, calling corporate, the police being called, customers trying to sneak their purchases out without anyone noticing, etc.:lol_hitti

Has anyone based in the tri-state area, especially the metropolitan area shared their penny-item success stories on this thread?

My question is if anyone in SE Michigan have had any success? Detroit and surrounding cities? Seems to me all of the stores around here that I've been to have their A-game on when it comes to inventory.

Has anyone picked up the winter work gloves for a penny yet? Every store I go to has like 2-3 giant boxes of them somewhere in the store. They haven't reached a penny here yet.

I picked up 5 Kwickset deadbolts and handles this morning at the $0.03 level.

Penny deal wasn't worth waiting for, $55 total to re-key and add deadbolts to the new house is cheap enough!

Things I am looking for if any of you are willing to pass on your deals:

-kitchen faucet
-chainsaw
-leaf blower

I think the penny deal days are limited. Yesterday, I jumped on a computer at an HD I frequent. They still have several 14 and 16 Homelite chain saws on the shelf at full price--I need one for my rental property. Last week, I had no issue using the PCA at this store--same terminal even. Yesterday, the PCA pulled up but listed "no items found" for any search I tried. Found a penny Ryobi hedge trimmer I needed on an upper shelf--out of box. Scanned at PCO, and it immediately popped up "wait for attendant." She then called the assistant manager to the front. The assistant manager was pissed when I quoted corporate policy, and never gave me the opportunity to buy at last clearance price--he wanted to sell it to me for last sticker sales price--$79.99 from 1/2016. He called the store manager and I got it for a penny but it was ugly and I felt dirty.

Point of the story is it appears they are closing the public PCA loophole, and flagging penny items at SCO.

Yeah don't look at one stores computers/servers/whatever being slow or ****** as sign of them stopping public access to computers. Just go to the one down the road and it'll work fine. It'll be slow as **** like each one I've been on but it'll work lll

Worked fine for me at other stores, but this one was an anomaly. I don't think it's a HD wide change, but this particular store appears to have made an effort to cut down on penny deals.

Just got for last clearance price. Almost got it for a penny but the damn thing froze up when I chose payment type. The attendant window never popped up. I just played dumb and told her I bought one two weeks ago. Showed her my last receipt she gave it to me for that price. She had me pay at another self checkout because that one always breaks she said. Of course I chose that one out of four that had issues.

I think all the people worried about the changes are just paranoid. I think that penny scheme is just a tiny blip on their radar. I highly doubt they are scheming up ways to stop it. This has been going on for a long time and they are writing those items off anyway. I think most of the issues boiled down to lack of training of their employees

I wonder what the new policy means for states with register accuracy laws. Here, if an item rings up for a penny and they sell it for a higher price the store can be fined. This probably means they either will not sell the item or give it away (cheap items only).

They know me well there but what I have a problem with is the associate who pulled up a picture of me on her phone from a previous incident over penny compressors and then proceeds to tell me she has taken a picture of my car and license plate and will be giving all my information to her coworkers at the police department banquet next weekend.

This. Massachusetts has these laws and price scanners so i'm sure i'll be getting the deals for a penny or they will be reported

Take her picture and state the same.

Just tell her that whenever someone asks if you work at a Home Depot or if you know someone that works there, your going to say "I have a friend of a friend named (her name) that works at (her store) that always tells me when stuff is going to marked down or dropped to a penny in exchange for a cut of my profits."

I told this to an SCO cashier who was interrogating me while waiting for the manager to get there. She hasn't tried to stop me with a penny item since then.

Damn, yeah that is a little serious..Most definitely an employee over stepping their boundaries.

The funny thing is, some of these employees act like HD gives 2 cents about their asses.And we know they don't!!

My local HD has removed all computers for customer use! I asked about using the one at customer service that used to face out and was told that was for job applications only. Hopefully the HD by work doesn't do the same!

If they don't have one available I normally try to use one by appliances. I am normally pretty quick when using that one because they will come up quickly and bug you.

I always use appliances. Or I use the doors and windows computer so I can sit down. Associate may ask if I need help but that's it.

I would definitely call corporate on this employee. That is not an acceptable thing to do ever.

I typically use the Appliance one as well. Was in an HD this morning and was on the computer for about a minute and employee comes over hovering. Asks me if I'm an associate and tell him no and I'm just looking up some prices like customers are allowed to. He then proceeds to tell me that customers are to use HD.com only. I point to the PUBLIC on the Store App and kindly tell him I can use the PCA and if he doesn't like it, he can go talk to a manager.

He saunters off to the Flooring section and talks to 2 employees. About 2 minutes later, here comes Bob, the stereotypical senior citizen employee. He gets right up next to me and asks if I need some help. After telling him no. He almost insist. This pissed me off so I point to the word PUBLIC again and tell him that says public and that's what I am...The public! These apps are for customer use. He then tells me he knows what it says as he can read. I tell him great, than leave me alone while I shop. I told the other fellow and now you that I don't need your assistance. He shook his head and slowly walked off.

I probably was a little bit more of a **** than I should have been but damn, it gets annoying dealing with some of these people. I'm literally on the computer for less than 5 minutes every time. Most employees either don't care or simply tell you to let them know if you need anything but there always those few who just can't help themselves. They have to try and act all important.
