I have/had mine in in a plastic bag, in a plastic tub, and it just ended up oozing all over the inside
of the bag,
I was thinking of getting a smaller cartridge type of gun
Any tips?

Don't own any... nothing really needs it these days.
If you look closely you can see my hand grease gun on the track. Never leaked a drop. My cordless one hangside on the pegboard.
Most new are sealed for "life". However, the better replacement parts are always greaseable. Moog problem solver for example.
I usually will try and do my replacements as OEM or equivalent though. If I do run into a situation where I need a grease gun, I'll get one then... I just haven't yet.
