How many ratchets do you own?

About 50, probably 15 snap on, 5 matco, various others. Flex, locking flex, normal and long in each drive, plus rotos, stubbies. Then 2 of each of all the hf flex low profiles in each drive size. Spark plug ratchet, low profile, pass thru. Bit ratchets. 2 3/4 drive ratchets. A couple gimmicky ratchets. As others said yeah you can get by with 5 or 6 total, a normal and flex in each size, but it can make the difference of an hour less of work by having the right tool for each job.

Just over 20, but I'm going to be selling some, giving away some soon. Nothing overly exciting, just big box store stuff but I'm just paring down. I have a full carry tool box + of "extras". It's got to go.

15 if we have to count them , or more than I thought since I don't really collect tools.
Roughly half of them in my box and the other half in portable sets>

1/2" one > plus 2 others stashed in old tool sets. (3 total)
3/8" four > long handle flex , low profile , RHFT craftsman , stubby plus 2 others stashed in sets (6 total)
1/4 two > a roto and a dinky Wright 2400 plus 4 others in sets (6 total)

1 @ 1/4 (vintage SK) 4 @ 3/8 (2 vintage Snap on, 1 vintage Napa and one vintage SK) 1 @ 1/2 (SK) and 1 @ 3/4 (vintage SK).

Seven in all. I need to off my broken snap on in the garbage.

Without going into too much detail, also without including breaker bars or torque wrenches

My shop box has
1/4" - 3 Snap On, 1 SK
3/8" - 3 Snap On
1/2" - 2 Snap On
3/4" - 1 SK

Service truck box has
1/4" - 1 SK, 1 Armstrong
3/8" - 1 SK, 1 Armstrong
1/2" - 1 Snap On, 1 SK, 1 Armstrong
3/4" - 1 Crescent

Personal truck tool box
1/4" - 1 Craftsman
3/8" - 1 Armstrong, 1 Craftsman,
1/2" - 1 Craftsman

Miscellaneous that have been replaced or aren't used
1/4" - 3 Craftsman
3/8" - 2 Craftsman, 1 Masterforce
1/2" - 3 Craftsman

So I think that's 31 all together. I don't think I'm missing any. The shop box ratchets get used on a regular basis. Service truck ratchets get used often. Personal truck ratchets are mainly in case of emergencies.

You're exempt because you make up for it in padlocks - of which I own only a dozen or so.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ratchets. Hmmm. I give up! There's no possible way for me to guess how many 1/4", 9/32", 3/8", & 1/2" drive ratchets I own. I do not own any 1" drive ratchets.

I think I can count how many 3/4" drive ratchets I own, but it's possible I'm mis-remembering. Not counting T-handle and breaker bar drivers, they are ...

- Craftsman pear head (x2)
- Proto Los Angeles pebble
- S-K round head
- Walden
- Blackhawk
- Williams
- Snap-on
- Wera (torque wrench)

That makes 9 3/4" drive ratchets. Not as many as some, but more than most. I probably have a problem ...

Brian

Now this I might be able to do off the top of my head. 3/4" drive rats:
- Cornwell Gearless x2
- Plomb x3
- Proto x1
- Bonney x2
- Williams x1
- Blackhawk (Baldie) x2, Female x1
- S-K x2
- Craftsman (S-K made) x2
- Truth x1
- Walden x1
- Milwaukee Tool & Forge x1
- Herbrand x2
- Duro x1
- Thorson x1

Probably forgot a couple but again, off the top of my head.:bounce:

Quite a few.

However in each drive size, 1/4,3/8,1/2.. I use mostly 2. Short "standard version" and "long" flex head.
Add 1/4" bit ratchet and you are in good shape with 7 ratchets. Unless you need 3/4" drive or bigger.

Buy once cry once instead of ending up with 30 ratchets you marginally like - only to use few of them.

Whoa. Crapsman? That is pretty harsh for one of the best ratcheting mechaism designs ever made (RHFT). Granted Craftsman has gone down hill but that is a little harsh. I have several snap on ratchets that I skip over to grab a Craftsman RHFT.

I am not even going to pretend to know how many smaller drive ratchets I have, enough that one is never far away anyhow.

My favorite ratchet is a previous generation 1/4" drive snap on flex head followed by a classic proto long handle in 1/2" drive. 3/8" drive is currently out of favor, I'm sure it will be back for me someday.

3/4" drive
1 craftsman that I'll never badmouth, it's seen some pretty long pipes
2 proto
1 wright

1" drive
1 proto
I generally go with bars, of which I have a armstrong and a proto

Looks like I was a little high . Counted 201 hand ratchets so far, refrigeration, cordless and air ratchets and the ones I missed would probably be total of around 225

I think I am at the 80ish or more level, a lot of them don't get used much, but that can be said about a lot of tools. Though ratchets generally shouldn't be one...sad thing is I think more of my ratchets are snap on than not :lol_hitti

I have about 30ish....only need some longer 1/2" rats and a 3/4" to cover all bases. Its easy to buy rats that are similar in spec to what you already have and not buy something that extends you capability. But deals come up and we bite.

Re: How many ratchets do you own ?

Probably too many at around 15. I find myself using the same ones all the time and only using the others to switch it up.

Actually,
Make that EIGHT.

I just remembered that I had inherited two old mini Snap-On's from my grandfather. One 1/4" and another 3/8" that is the same size.

Not sure if these are anything special, but they are special to me.

Any of you experts know anything about the baby Snap-On's I posted above?

Let's switch gears a little bit:

What about sockets?

Do you really need a:
- Standard
- Deep
- Six Point
- Six Point Deep
- Impact
- Deep Impact
- Swivel
- ect........

In each and every individual size?

How many sockets of each size do you have?

That's honestly about what you need to cover all your bases anymore I feel like.

Start a new thread. And yes you need sockets. Do you work on anything?

Who do you think started THIS thread?

To me, it's a continuation of the same conversation, but whatever.

Yes, I work on things occasionally. I'm not a professional mechanic, but yes, I have a couple of drawers full of sockets. Re-read the original post, and you'll see that I'm finally getting settled and setting up my home shop.

Looking for advice on how far I should go to round out my kit.

Thanks.

Re: How many ratchets do you own ?

I'm now up to 161 including oddballs like palm and fingertip...

I do use a lot of different ones as I'l pic what will work best for the situation. and I love the 3/8 in a 1/4 handle and the ones with extra long handles and/or flex heads... But admittedly I don't use all of them by a stretch.
