Installing Casters on Garage Cabinet: Advice

I weld frames from repurposed bed frame and set plywood into the frames. The casters can be mounted to the frames or to the plywood.

To the best of my recollection, I believe that all my shop equipment is on either wheels or casters.

Very nice. I was going to do it like you but this other guy said he got some casters on amazon and just replaced the feet with them

I have all my heavy stuff on casters

I have found that HF does a good job in the caster dept
But their assembled dolly’s are cheaper than 4 casters!
the end pieces are placed on top of the stretchers so a 2x4 filler is needed for a smooth top
I am not afraid to cut the wood so adjusting for depth or width is no problem

they sell them in 2 sizes
I found that 2 of the smaller size friction fit in the bottom recess of a base toolbox just fine
no customizing required and 8 wheels to s[read the load

Sorry I was not clear. Remove the entire foot. Verify the thread size. 5/16-18 is what mine were, but they could’ve changed. Makes sure it’s not a m8 or m10.

Iam installing them right now and they fit, however did youncut the side of the cabinet lip to screwed it more or did u stop where it hits?

They work but they don't go all the way in

I don't know who should I ask but maybe you know. Do you thinknit will be safe to put one of my gladiator cabinets infront of garage water heater to cover it? It's a gas water heater.

pssst, they sell casters that attach with a threaded rod, you can probably find some that thread right into those rivnuts.

The rivnuts were there to support the weight in the cabinet on those threaded feet in the first place.

I purchased these 3/8 that fit perfect however they are only 1" long. Iam thinking about buying the same but with the steam 1.5" long so it can screw in more and caster will clear bottom cabinet lip when swiveling.

That looks great. I wish I’d seen your thread when you first started it. I have the same type of cabinets. I ordered a set of stem casters from amazon with the same thread and put them right in. I like how your wood base supports the whole bottom shelf, but I like how my stem casters screwed right in and took less than 5 minutes.

I got the once with the steam 1" long but I don't know gow secure they are since they don't screw all the way in. Iam thinking on gettingnthe once with the longer steam 1.5"

What kind of caster have 1” steam? Where were you looking at casters with longer steam?

This guy on this thread told me to get them in amazon. Just click on his link. They work but I think the once with linger steam 1.5" will work better.

Yep, direct swap for the feet. Do yourself a favor and double check the thread size before you order. Make sure there was not a change to it somewhere along the way.

I used the stem castor’s recommendation from Amazon and the revitit nuts bent immediately after loading cabinet trying to roll into place I had my hands full keeping the cabinet from toppling over while unloading cabinet. I would not recommend the stem casters that screw directly In existing mount. Back to the drawing board for me. Am I the only one that experienced this bending of stem mount?

His method using wood looks solid. I made a rectangle frame out if 1-1/2” angle and set the cabinet inside the frame then bolted through the cabinet, angle iron frame and casters

You might be the only person who will admit.
I use only ALGOOD from Brampton, Ontario Canada. Excellent quality and durability. I may have more than 30 in service.

as long as the water heater can get combustion air you will be fine
your cabinets look to be high enough off the floor for air to flow
so you should be fine

I am looking to do similar on a new Gladiator cabinet - but the wider 48in version; the threading matches 1/2"-13 bolt. The actual base otherwise shares similar measurements of 1-1/2" height, and so a 1-1'2" long stem isn't long enough to go thru to be captured by a nut on the top/inside. For those using the 1in castors, any issues with it not being secured with a nut?

also, any thoughts on installing two additional wheels in the middle of the cabinet width (using a wood cross piece to mimic the depth of the rivets at the corners -- to help level the then set of 6) ?

I think everyone is overthinking it. The absolute easiest thing to do is use two of these dollies per cabinet. https://www.harborfreight.com/mater...in-1000-lb-capacity-hardwood-dolly-58312.html. I doubt I'll even bother attaching them with screws to the cabinet. Dimensions are perfect.
