Just picked this up for $20. Is it worth $20?:D Haven't plugged it in yet but it has to be worth $200 in just parts alone.

If it works, its worth it. If it dont work and you make something more than $20.00 on parts.....

Kind of a moot point because I plan on restoring it and using it. I'm pretty handy at fixing stuff (just not electrical). Should be fun to bring it back from the dead. My Mom's next door neighbor picked it up at a storage auction. Damn thing is heavy as hell.

I'd suggest you try to manually turn it over, spray moable parts with some lube before applying power.

I spun it and everything moves freely. Table adjusts, the blade guide works (the bearing needs to be replaced), The motor pulley is dented but I found one on "the bay". If the motor doesn't work that would be a bit to replace so I hope it works. He also had a delta scroll saw for the same price. I didn't need one but how can you pass up a deal like that so I will just flip the scroll saw.

Why replace it? Open it up, fine sand all the copper you see on the rotor and stator until it looks new, clean it all out with brake cleaner, grease the bearings/bushings and put it back together. Should take an hour, and it'll run fine. Worst case you might have to put new brushes in.

Done it with the starter, window motors and generator on my Thunderbird. As well as countless other starters, alternators, generators, fridge fan motors, vent motors, dryer motors, etc. The guts are all the same.

You are assuming an AC/DC motor and odds on its not...

Yeah that I can handle. I used to do that on my Chevy starters & alternators all the time. The funny thing is it has some kind of safety plug on it. It has a little black button.:dunno:

You have already checked the essentials, so all it can really need is a motor. that has the slow speed pulley jack shaft, so worth a lot more than the average band saw without it, as you can cut metal with it...

That's what I have planed for it. I build hotrods and do a fair amount of fabricating so it should come in handy.

Theres nothing to sand in a a Induction motor. If you sand anything, you will probably ruin it. There are no brushes/commutator to need cleaning.
DC motors are nothing like AC induction motors.

The ONLY thing that may possibly need sanding, would be the contacts on the centrifual switch, but that may depend on if the switch assmebly is sealed. if it doesnt work, check the start/run cap with a multimeter, or replace it, and check the resistance of the windings( to see if you have continuity).

Edit: Well actualy, there is 1 kind of induction motor with brushes, but I really doubt thats a repulsion/induction motor.

you do know that has the reduction pulley on it for metal ???

Yes it was mentioned earlier in the thread but no up to that point I did not know it. That's a good thing as I'm going to be using it for metal.

I wansnt trying to be mean, I just had horrible images running though my mind of someone reading that and going out and sanding all the insulation off of the stator, and then frying the motor.:lol_hitti

Clean it up and repaint, its worth $250 easy. I ts a top notch machine.

Around here that would bring twice that amount cleaned up, painted and running. I once sold a Powermatic 14" wood/metal bandsaw for $900.

Also parted out a Delta/Rockwell belt/disc sander for over $500. Paid $10 because it was incomplete. :lol:

This qualifies for the Usuck of the month award so far. :thumbup:

I did the math on the deal. I picked up a rolling storage box (Kinda roached out), the delta scroll saw, & the band saw; all for $50 delivered so that would come to $16.67 each! This guy has a bunch (About 6 and 3 regulators) of torches as well for $40 Some are for cutting and some for welding. Just didn't have the $40 on me or I would have gotten those too.

This is a really desirable machine. The gearbox reducer models are great. I don't see the oil fill, so maybe this is just a jack shaft model, but it looks like the model with the gears. Google for the manual to be sure.

There should be 2 belts to allow you to adjust a full range of speeds. The big pulley should slide in and out to engage the different gears.

I paid $480 for one, in good cosmetic shape, but with the gearbox bypassed. (This was common.) Took belts and lube to get it running.

Clean it up, replace the belts, get the gearbox running (if it's that model.) The motor might just be a jammed switch. Try bypassing that first.

If you need new tires on the wheels, get some urethane ones on ebay.

Good machine, simple fixes, great score. MAJOR SUCKAGE!

Well I plugged it in and the motor runs great only thing is it won't run unless I press the button on the plug. If I let the button go it stops.:headscrat I'm going to pull off that safety plug and put a regular plug on it. I'll post a picture of the safety plug later. On a side note the scroll saw works as well.

More pictures of the gear box and the bent pulley. You guy's probably know more about it then me (make that definitely). You guy's will have to show me how to use it once I get it fixed up. I also took pictures of the saf-start plug. I'll have to do a little research on that. I'm thinking it may be bad. Can I just remove it & put a regular plug on it? I engaged the gear & spun it and everything feels tight and smooth (no slop).

That is the one that goes on the motor right?
If so, that's the fastest speed, depending on what you want to set up to cut,
either that or I bet you could lay in on a wooded bench and straighten it with another piece of wood and a hammer.

You can put a regular plug on the end, as long as you aren't required to abide by OSHA regulations.

The plug is a safety thing, in case you lose power it won't just start up when the power comes back on.
