Amazing that we got to the second page and no one mentioned US Jack.

Probably because the OP said they wanted to spend $60/pair and USJack are over $150. With shipping its close to 3x their stated budget.

I have a set of these also (3 ton version) and they're fine. However, I'm 99.5% sure they come from the same factory as the HF ones that were recalled.

My HF stands were in the recall, but didn't show the defect (slim shelf on the bar). I really should take the HF ones in for the credit since I have a QuickJack and little need for that AND two sets of stands)

Weight rating is specified on the stand, required by OSHA and if used in a OSHA environment the rating decal/sticker/stamping has to be maintained.

Standards have changed. the current ANSI spec makes it very clear that stands are to be used in pairs, the rating applies to a pair, which shall not exceed the capacity of a single stand.

A few months ago, there was a recall on Harbor freight 3 ton jack stands, turns out the ratchet lock sometimes would not lock and drop.

Wow, thanks for this. I'm going to check mine right away.

Edit: Turns out mine are not even HF stands at all. I was sure I bought them there, but they are ProLift, not Pittsburgh. Thanks for the heads up just the same though.

It really depends on what car you are working on. The modern European cars use special jack adapters, you might want to consider the flat top jack stands like Esco in order to support jack adapters.

I have a pair of these 4 ton stands from Advance Auto that are quality constructed and nicely finished with nice welds. It might seem gimmicky at first, but they have an air spring inside the center column that raises it to the frame or support point when the pin is pulled and the lever raised. This is nice if the stand has to be positioned far under the vehicle. The pin is not a safety pin to lock the teeth of the column but serves to keep the column from extending when carrying the stand by the lever.
They are sold INDIVIDUALLY so double the price shown for a pair. But with the 25% discount I paid less than $60 including tax. For those that like Torin brand, Home Depot sells the TCE (Torin Commercial Equipment) 4 ton stands for about the same price for a pair. These look to be the same as the 4 ton stands carried by NAPA, just different colors. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/teq-correct-4ton-quick-start-jack-stand-1-ea-tq43002/11971137-P

You have to look at the label on some. The label may state, that they are 3 ton ,if used in pairs. Garage or estate sales are good to find jack stands, with the understanding, you know what you are looking for.

I have a couple sets of the Torin 6ton double locks and they have been awesome. Great height to them and with the double lock, I don't worry about them somehow dropping the car on me.

I agree on the 3 ton being to too small height wise, I have a pair of 2 ton and 3 ton that I keep around for supporting the axle when I'm working on suspension stuff.

BM

I have a pair of the Torins 6 tons. I bought them specifically because they had the secondary pin lock. Still got them, but I don't use them anymore since I have my lift.

I gave my jack stands away.

I have a series of 8x8, 6x6, 4,4, 2x4, and 1 inch thick pieces of decking and build up to the height I need. I find it safer and more convenient for a variety of reasons.

Won't Scratching up the under coating. I hardly never used the pinch welds because they are often damaged and unstable. Between rust and People damaging them by using Floor jacks which point load them and add a side load.

More stability. As someone said if you wrench with a breaker bar on jack stands you may have a problem.
Plenty of strength.
excellent on uneven surfaces. dirt, gravel etc.
Won't dig into asphalt

If I were to buy a jack stand I would get the Ren Jack. Only because some cars now have no safe jacking points other than the pinch welds.

I just did a search on Napa, they have Balkamp 3 tons on sale for $29.99/pr (normally $40/pr) and 6 tons for $49.99/pr (normally $65/pr). I'm thinking of spending $160 plus tax on a set of each. They don't have the safety pins, but neither do my old 3 tons.

My understanding is on these types its the tiny roll pin that gives away. I've kicked around the idea of drilling another hole or two on either side of the existing pin and putting in some new rolled pins, anyone ever do that?

Wow, thanks to Los and Bacon.....great info. Definitely will go with 6 ton, realizing I may need to invest in smaller ones for our smaller vehicles.

Can anyone vouch for ProLift? These look pretty good.

I have two sets of ProLift, 3 and 6 ton. Never any signs of trouble from either, but I use them at the lowest or next to lowest setting.

If you feel the need to drill into your jack stands, you should just get better jack stands...

I made these yesterday out of 2x10’s . [emoji4]
I’m just doing fluid changes - so it works.
Best part is, they stand vertically.

After the HF recall , I decided on ramps.
I’m planning on laying a new driveway later this year and didn’t want stands to dig into the fresh asphalt.

I returned two sets of the 3 ton. There was no HF markings on them at all, but same exact design. I got full credit and no questions asked.

Are they still taking stands back? How much are they giving for them? I have four sets of 3 ton and two sets of 6 ton that I'd like to replace with US Jacks

Yes they'll take them back, there's an actual recall letter floating around. I printed it and had it in hand when I returned mine. In fact they even took my jack stands which weren't part of the recall. IIRC that was addressed in the recall letter too. After two back to back recalls I wasn't taking chances. I returned 4 6ton stands and got cash back. I payed up for US Jack 6 ton stands, well worth the money and no regrets.

Are you talking about the roll pin that connects the handle to the pawl on ratcheting jacks stands? I would have thought that most people would have wanted a roll pin that would break with less force rather than trying to reinforce it.

Exactly, that way the pin breaks before you can release it while there is weight on the top.

Depends on what features you need, specifically if you must work on uneven ground or soft ground, even asphalt then you want a larger base with flat feet on them.

If you don't need these things then I'd just get a $30 pair of Torins or really any name brand, not generic including not Harbor Freight.

Some people feel a safety pin is important. I have sets with and without and would pay a little more for the feature but not a lot - I inspect my stands before use and have never had a failure where it would have mattered. It is extremely difficult to accidentally bump a (non-defective) jack stand hard enough to release it while it has significant (corner of a vehicle level of) weight on it. Almost impossible, that's why there's a shear pin on that type of jack stand.
Oh interesting, you mean the roll pin is designed to shear before it would have enough Force to pick up the pawl, out of the teeth?
As far as the double lock safety pin look how long we were using these jack stands without a double locking pin, without issue.

Are most 3 ton jack stands even tall enough to get a 1/2 ton pickup off the ground? (assuming you are on the frame and trying to get the front wheels off the ground)

I think anything name brand is going to be fine. I have OTCs, some CarQuest ones, some no name el cheapos, and a set of 3 ton Craftsmans. They all look about identical and never had an issue with any of them.
I had a 1 ton E350 , I used small jackstands under the front axel.
Bigger problem was finding a jack with enough reach.

I'd say go with the 6ton. not so much for the weight, but for the height.
A lot of these jacks go up to 24 in, so why have a jack stand that's only going to go up to around 16 in?
I'm looking at some six-ton jack stands,
as a matter of fact I just ordered a set I ordered the pro lift six ton,
but I got them used like new through Amazon warehouse.
Hopefully they're in good shape but anyways they go up to like I think it was 23 and a half inches somewhere around there, and I actually wish they went higher because the AC Hydraulics Jack I ordered it's the DK 13 Long reach goes up to 29 in.
To be honest I wouldn't mind having the car up 28 or 29 in all the way around just makes it more comfortable to work on.

I bought these last December, under $50 a pair and are 6 ton, also have a lock pin.

IMO if a person isn't going to get under the car 3 ton are fine.

Yes "was" a good price up to
$97. 79 now.
I swear as soon as Amazon sees somebody buying something that's when they raise the price.
That's the stands I ordered.
I have a pair coming through Amazon warehouse, hopefully they'll be okay they were about 50 something but they were $55 Monday (the new ones) they just raised it this week.

That was back in March, seems like every shipment from Asia comes with a price increase..........................

Good to know was that store credit only?
Wrench 97.
Seems like every time I buy something at Amazon it goes up the next day or a couple days later.
I called Amazon took about 45 minutes but asking him why they canceled my warehouse deals jack stands when there was other warehouse deals available they gave me a bunch of moringa Maru, about the seller being out of stock or whatever they ended up giving me a $55 credit though
I have another warehouse deal ordered we'll see how they are if not I'll send them back and just buy the new ones and use the credit that will bring them down to around my $41 original price of the warehouse deal.
But I asked him about my AC Hydraulics Jack also I was concerned since they had canceled my warehouse deal jack stands, that they would cancel my floor jack since it has not shipped yet "he said"........ not to worry it was guaranteed delivery by the 7th so we'll hope so.

But I am watching my email and my Amazon account because if it ships I want to intercept the shipping and make sure I leave special instructions to leave it down at the garage and not up on the deck here so I don't have to try to drag it down to the garage.
I don't know how they're shipping it I hope if it's ups they don't beat the heck out of it.

I wonder if harbor freight will come up with a good heavy duty built set of six ton jack stands?
Looks like there is practically zero jack stands at harbor freight right now maybe a few three ton.
If my AC Hydraulics Jack works out there's no sense having 3 ton jack stands that will only go up to what maybe 16 inches?
When the AC Hydraulics Jack goes up to 29 inches. I'm kind of a height freak, and I don't get around as well as I used to so even like something like a brake job, or front hubs, I think I would like to have it up nice and high.

Looking to be some simple 3 ton jack stands. This would be to work on a sedan and a compact car.

I purchased a nice Daytona floor jack from HF. I don't want to buy their aluminum stands. I prefer steel. I'm looking to spend around $50-60 for a pair of stands. Any Recommendations?
Did you get the Daytona Jack with the 3-year warranty the big one?
If not which one did you get?
How is the jack working out for you?

Been buying Lincoln/Hein Warner stands as needed since about 1990 and haven't found any problems yet. They used to be made in USA, but now I think they're assembled here from parts from who knows where.

Think I have two pairs of the 3 tons and three or four pair of the 6 ton versions.
Six ton jack stands are more versatile, but sometimes are kinda overkill.

Not the cheapest but I like to think I'm paying for extra quality inspections!
I think pretty much the 6 tons will do everything the three tons will do and then some. Of course it can't hurt to have a few three tons laying around also.
