Looking good. Running air lines is one my top wish list items.

I have 1 last thing to do before I call phase 1 completed and that's a work bench using that HF tool box back there

last night I was alone so I just piddled around seeing if I will be happy with the drops

One problem I had was the inlet pipe moved about 1/2" to the left and I thought I would have to butcher the nice perfect hole I had drilled
I decided to work on it some and see if I could still make it work. It was not going well as the short pipe that that runs from the 90 to outside just didn't want to line up and thread in. And mind you all these fittings are really tight (maybe too tight) and I was being carefull about how much pressure I was putting on those clamps holding the pipe up. I could see me knocking it all down since I was by myself :lol_hitti

Well it took a few trips up and down the ladder and a couple of sit down drink a beer and think it overs but I managed to get it to work without butchering the gable end

A better pic of the pipe coming in and as my wife would say I came up short after all was tightened up

So I cut a longer one

I spent the week getting the air line drops done. Heres a pic of my plan

since I was fairly happy with what that looked like I spent a few hours each evening sealing and mounting the drops. I wanted to leave the bottoms of the drops open to clear the lines so the drain went in last.

Saturday mid day we drained the oil and discounted the compressor from the attached garage for it s move to it permanent home. I keep saying we need 1 more person but give it to #2 son use #3 son s10 and lay compressor down. I will say first try was more than engineer(aka son #2) thought. But we pulled it off

we made it no damage done next up get it off the pallet... And before anyone says something yes a roof and 2 walls are in the works

we used some 3/4" pipe and went between the tank and pump plate and we got it in where I wanted it and marked it. we them moved it out of the way drilled and installed 1/2" x5" redheads. the electrician was there by then so the 4 of us put it on the red heads wired it up and made it run

You know letting the 125 lbs of air out would made moving easier. :bounce:

With compressor in place, what's next besides compressor shed?

xmas I hope you have a joyous Christmas and don't let the lack of snow bug you.

Shorty we knew that about the air so yes we did release it  and we also drained the oil it was over due .

I have been having computer issues so updates are slow sorry

I did get it hooked up and running in a short amount of time

I had left the bottoms off of the drops so we could use the air to clear the lines. Then I just had to put the drains in that only took a few minutes
My plan was have every thing done move the compressor out there plumb it in and make it all work.

A pic of the drain valves

All ready for pressure fingers crossed

We had everything ready inside with 2 on the look out and me to turn the handle. nothing blew apart and no major air leaks detected. Soooo some one wanted to try out his new toy that was all ready to go. This pic will make more sense later

Looks like the shop has a nice air about it.

I assume the right side of the compressor shed will be open?

Where did you get the drain valves? Looks like what I need.

And looks like the cabinet has been thoroughly tested.

Thanks shorty yes the right side will sort of be open the plan is to have the whole length of the back wall under roof 4' out for storage of stuff. I was supposed to go get the steel for the roof and the stevo inspired work bench last Monday. The steel place is closed today thru Monday  so I have to have one of the boys do it during the week.

I found those drain valves at Macmaster carr I wasn't to sure about the thumb screw but so far they are working good.
While fixing a few small air leaks the dam regulator by the compressor started leaking I just received the warranty replacement yesterday but my faith in this brand is not good :dunno:

I need to find jaws for this wilton vise I have emailed wilton but haven't heard back yet. my grand daughter bead blasted it for me

Here is where I need some help ideas from the GJ :lol_hitti The blast cabinet needs to stay closer to the wall but I want to be able to pull it out for the rare times we need to open the clam shell. I'm going to put some rubber feet on it to help level it out and get it off the floor. We are thinking some thing like wheel's mounted to the back of the legs that when tilted it would roll. Anyone have any ideas :dunno:

Some fixed wheels mounted perpendicular to back legs where wheel is just touching floor should work. Also a couple of handles on the front of cabinet if there's no place to comfortably lift and pull. When it comes time to move, just call the moving expert, Gerard. :lol_hitti

That's the same thing my son wants to do and we can make the handles so the fold down when not in use

Well my last post was about moving the compressor to the new shop. Next step was to get it covered up and somewhat enclosed I had a plan in my head that I felt would work, my #2 son also had a plan mine was to build the roof truss's out of 1" square tube his was a mixture of square tube and angle iron. I let him do it his way and I'm glad I did I think it came out pretty darn good.

First task was to get some steel, I'm also planning a Steve O inspired work bench using the HF tool box so I picked up steel for that while I was there

first step was to make the truss's

After he made them I primed and painted them we started with 4 spaced at 24" on center. The plan is to use this concept across the entire back of the building

Here is a pic of the first one installed we used wedge anchors to attach to the wall

and here is all 4 installed and cross braces welded in place. Notice we used the 4 wheeler as a welder cart

For the roof we used corrugated steel and screwed it to the truss and trimmed it to go around the air line and electrical conduit

there was a storm coming and we wanted to get the sides on. I had 2 full sheets of hardie board left over from the gable ends and the compressor pad is 4'x4' so it worked perfect

we left an air gap on the side and attached a short piece of angle iron to the wall we still need to weld the angle from the wall to the corner but it was to windy to weld. you can see the piece of angle sitting there ready to be welding in

with the compressor covered we have started moving stuff from the attached garage to the new shop I didn't get any pics of moving my tool box but we just used scraps of plywood and rolled it across the 80 ft of dirt grass.

Next up was the parts washer I ran into a deal a few months ago on some clean safety kleen fluid so before it got put in place I drained the old and removed all the sludge from the bottom of the drum. Also the red top needed a color change and yes it was mentioned that maybe a fresh powder coat job would be in the near future. But there are other things that need to be done so for now this will work

#3 son came across these rubber mats so I cleaned one up and set the pw on it

Nice thing is I still have enough fluid to do another change :D

Was there something you didn't like about surplus? I have done business with them for many years.

Thank you for the compliment on the shop. Its a work in progress

Alro in Longwood is all new metals, and they have a lot. If you're looking for something specific and a lot of it, it's the place to go. I always go in to look for scraps tho; the extra bits from other peoples projects. I haven't bought full length anything from them.

Surplus (Acme I'm guessing) is good for stuff you can make due with. If you know what I mean. They'll have some specific things but it comes and goes with what they find. You might find the angle bar you want or you might find blank street signs.

Skycraft surplus in Orlando is a cool little place for all sorts of things. They have a small metal section where you can find really unique pieces. Fun to dig around for, "man I could use this for **" kind of things.

I'll have to check out Alro. I havent been there. Been to skycraft many times for a bunch of things. There is a sheet metal place close to me that I can get what I want from them for cheap. They usually do big projects for companies but will sell to individuals also if they have what you want. Way cheaper than HD. Place is called sheet metal shoppe.

Hadn't heard of that place, and it's right down the street from my office in Maitland.

I was thinking it was Acme Surplus in Sanford. Could be a good place to check out if you've not heard of it.

Well I have been thinking.. beer seems to help :lol_hitti anyway some of the Florida chapter have been giving hints to a party and my excuse has been its not finished. Well we are now going to put this build in phase's

Phase 1 Have final inspection, floor coating, more lights , air compressor and air lines

phase 2 loft, ceiling fans , insulation and ceiling

Phase 3 pavers and landscaping

So with that said Phase 1 is complete so its time for a "shop party"

:lol_hitti

Just need to find out whats best for all :dunno:

I've had that same Stihl saw for a couple of years. It's a great saw. Mine has seen a lot of use with no problems. Good luck with your build.
I'm late to the discussion but I second what ejm1961Tbird said . They are a bit heavy but a great middle of the road saw that can do most anything I've asked of it. You made a good choice.

I'm still here  just been busy the side affect of owning old cars that are daily drivers.

So while have to fix said old cars the lack of work bench became a real issue. :shocking:

I already planned to do a Steve O style bench using the HF 44" box. My boys got me 1 box last year for my birthday and I had been using it out there as a make shift bench and catch all. My plans were to use 2 of them. there is more to this but I'll save that for later.

Disclaimer we are not fabricators by any stretch of the means. Mistakes were made .

Our first issue was finding a flat spot to tack and the weld some 2" steel . We had an old frame jig out back holding stuff. so we moved it inside the shop and put down a couple of welding blankets. ( don't want to hurt my floor)

We made 4 sections then welded in the 1-1/2" Angle and did a test fit with the one box
