One of the projects on my list is a set of steel stairs for my shop. Been dragging a little bit due to the cost. I picked up 20 treads and 2 20' channels from a guy doing an estate cleanout. He had 2 or 3 times that amount but I grabbed the cleanest of the lot off the top of the pile. It's all never been used, but sitting for 20 years. $180 bucks, well worth it in comparison to the $950 plus I would have in new material.

I'm going to do bolt together. I think I'll weld up and paint the treads this summer and finish the project closer to fall.

Ok, so big question I have on the fire pits you've made is how long does the paint survive once it's been used a few times? I'd think the clearcoat or paint would be burnt right off and then it's rust-ville. Is it not that way?

I really don't know on the black ones, its BBQ paint. Customer can touch it up.

My personal one is ceramic header clear. Outside is fine, I'm sure the underside is taking a beating.

They are 3/16 plate. MY primary intention was to let them naturally patina. The general public likes satin black. Corrosion protection wasn't a priority for me.

One of my lingering project is my press. I finally got an electric pump, which works great and solves the slow actuation/low flow issues I was having with the smaller pneumatic pump. Happy with that. Really trying to shine this old gem up, it's so nice.

Now on to solving the sticky and slow return issue. It really acts like the packing is too tight or too dry. If I slather the cylinder in heavy oil, then cycle it a few times, there's a huge improvement. I wonder if this little port hole is supposed to have oil in it or not, maybe to keep the wiper lubricated?

Been chipping away at my stair project, got the treads all welded up and painted.

THEN BOOM. Bought a JK Rubi with a 5.7 Hemi. Sold my TJ. Wasn't really looking, but at the price, it was kind of a once in a lifetime chance. Drove it 500 miles home. It needs a lot of little tweaks, I'm about 1/2 way through the laundry list.

Fixed so far fuel vapor leak, fuel splashback issue, leaking rad, alternator, underhood aftermarket wiring 90% removed, tensioner, idler, belt, radio, added skid plates for EVAP and fuel tank.

Up next week is brakes, suspension and steering. After that it's just fun bolt on gee-gaws like bumpers, winch, tires and fenders.

Nice. Every jeep should have a V8. How well does that 'Hemi move it around?

I babied it on the way home on account of the radiator, and haven't driven it much yet otherwise.

With that said, it does boogie. It's pretty controlled and tame though. Drives pretty nice, gets good mileage on the highway and seems like a clean install, no noises or rattles etc.

Now you’re talking, very cool bud

Let me know when you want to cam it, I got a couple of decent bump sticks laying around. Or..OR, A forged 392....ya that’s it, and a huffer too. :bounce:

We need some motor pics.
What tire/lift combo are you planning? What is the goal for the vehicle?

What is the brake used with the press above? manufacturer/model

Looks like a big wad of black plastic and aluminum jammed in a green box lol. I'll have more pics as I go.

It will be same as my TJ. Good street use, solid mid level trail rider. We call the trails blue and purple with some black mixed in. I wheel at Rausch Creek, coal country with everything from hills to mud to plenty of rocks from basketball sized to school bus sized.

2" spring in back, 3" in front with Old Man Emu shocks, working on that now.
It will run 35" BFG Muds, Alumimum Fenders and a Genright Front Bumper.

Brake I made. Used the punch section of a real press brake, home brew around that.

Don't know how I missed this thread before but subscribed now. Great work on the projects thus far.

You had me at Jeep but then when you mentioned V8 Jeep, that REALLY got my attention. Looking forward to following along for the ride.

Looks like AEV Pintler wheels and AEV's bumper/light combination. If I could give one suggestion for warding off overheating issues, ditch the large lights in front of the grille area. It looks like the winch is already sunken into the bumper which is a good start. That way the air can get into that engine bay easier as it is already at a disadvantage based on its small size.

Yes sir they are, the AEV wheels and bumper will be sold off, I had the same thoughts about the airflow so I've already pulled those goofy huge lights until I get a new bumper. It didn't run very hot sitting in I95 traffic on the way home from NC with a small radiator leak, so that's promising. I just installed a C and R radiator, which I'm hoping will last a long time. I'll be running a Genright low profile with sunken winch once my bank account recovers, which you surely know about haha.

I don't have any real Hemi JK pics to show yet, but I have been pounding out a laundry list of little things that didn't suit me.

Now it's time to move on to more fun stuff. Before I order my bumpers, winch, fenders and tires- I have a small fab project to knock out.

I removed the back seat, and am installing a cargo basket behind the 2 buckets. It will just keep my bag, strap and other junk from rolling around- Nothing real heavy.

Here is the basket in progress. It's 42x16. I'll be riveting and welding tomorrow, with hopes to have it painted by the weekend.

It's my first AL project that's not flat. Did the best I could with what limited knowledge I have and the materials I could scare up.

Nice job on the storage box.

What kind of brake do you have besides your smaller press brake that you used to bend those up. I keep waffling on getting a 48" pan brake but question just how often I'll use it for the real estate it will require.

My tool and die repair neighbor has both a 48" National 16 ga shear and brake in his shed, so I can walk over and use it anytime the shop is open. That's what I did here.

I too would love to have one of my own.

This 16ga brake was almost too small for .080 alumimum at full width. I think when I do buy one, it'll be a 14ga floor mounted model with more leverage.

Nice to have that available.

I too have been looking at a little more heavy duty of a brake. The 48" ones I've been eyeballing are 14 and 12 gauge models but carry a hefty price tag so I'm having a hard time justifying one for the occasional use.

What type and grit belts do you use/suggest on the Kalamazoo BG248?

I bought Norton Blaze in 60 and 80 and some house brand ones in like 120. I am only on like the 2nd belt so no real feedback.

Norton Blaze is my go to on 3" discs, so I kind of knew what to expect.

If I knew what I was doing, I'd be unstoppable man! Good thing I'm just flying by the seat of my pants.

True success is the man (oops-person) who makes it up as he/she goes along and pulls it off

Don’t feel alone brother, I’ve made a damn good living off winging it :spit:

Is it anchored down?

As nice as the box is, I would fab up a cover for it. Too many projectiles in the cab when things go bad.

Very much anchored thru the seat mount loops.

After having a fully enclosed box for 7 years, I'd never do it again unless it was a super custom box from someone like Highway Products. After much consideration, I did the basket on purpose knowing the risk. It can be netted if needed.

I was just going to say just throw a bungie net over it. looks great!

Here's a few shots of my finger brake I built for bending. It handles 12" of 3/16, mostly with a 85 degree heavy gooseneck punch but I also have a smaller gooseneck punch for 14ga that yields a tighter radius. The bottom is just a 2 way die made from 1214.

What type of springs did you use for this brake? Size and coefficient would be great!
Thank you

I couldn't tell ya bud. It was big enough to fit over a 5/8 bolt with ease, and the wire is a solid 1/8". It came in a 2 or 3 foot stick from McMaster Carr.

my next question was going to be the bolt diameter, thanks for the info. its great having Mcmaster 10 mins driving distance for stuff like this.

Been chipping away at the JK. Unfortunatly not a lot of fab, mostly trimming/fitting and bolting. Inner fenders, fenders, bumpers, winch, slider and tires/wheels.

And here it is, visually finished.

A few lights, a CB, bump stops and front driveline are on the punch list.

Undecided if I should be running alloy axleshafts or not.
