A month or so ago I was at work and was having a hell of a time removing some JIS screws from a motor. So I went to the McMaster catalog and wrote down the P/N's for a #1 and #2 JIS screwdrivers. Well the next day two Vessel screwdrivers showed up and they worked beautifully on the JIS screws but I tried them on standard philips and they worked just as well. I have used Many different phillips drivers (SO, Whitt, Wiha, Cman, Klein and Wera are the ones I can think of) and none have gripped the screw head like these Vessels do. I saw in another thread that SO uses a JIS profile but I don't think mine are, maybe they used a regular phillips back then, mine are around 25 years old? Does anyone know of another manufacturer that makes a JIS profiled screwdriver? I would like to purchase a set for home, I may just order the Vessels but I was wondering if there were any other options.

I would get Vessel

I have some of both brands and I prefer Vessel. Their handle is better.

Vessel 930 Megadora :)

My Vessel screwdrivers have become my go-to's. The magnetic tips are even useful, and I normally hate that feature.

I would like some bits, same answer there?

I got some JIS bits from Vessel. Have not used them yet so I can't comment further. Been using the Megadora's rather than the bits.

Have you tried a search? Numerous threads on this recently...

Actually I did but did not find much, Google was actually a better search. So what I have found the Vessels conform to DIN 5260 and not actually JIS. I would think my other screwdrivers that are made in germany would also conform to the DIN 5260 standard but they don't fit like the Vessels do.

Bigblue&Goldie, that is what I am doing right now. I was just curious if anyone else made a screwdriver with this same profile as it seems that the DIN 5260 profile is superior to a standard Phillips and works with the old JIS screws as well. I just could not believe the difference in these drivers.

Yep, unless you can find NOS true JIS screwdrivers, as far as I know, modern "JIS" are rolled into DIN 5260.

There was a recent thread that showed, or linked to another thread that showed, close ups of driver profiles of different "JIS" drivers

I think there have been 3 different threads on JIS drivers in the last week or two. Good info to be gleaned...

BTW, I use Vessel too and haven't needed to seek out any other

FWIW, Hozan, PB Swiss, & Moody are names that have been mentioned for JIS screwdrivers/bits...

Also, JIS profile can be used in PH heads, but not vice versa

I've been conducting some research on the JIS => DIN 5260 movement before purchasing a set of JIS compatible screwdrivers. I was very close to just ordering the Vessel Megadoras but figured Id see what else was available. Preferring a Euro brand, I looked at PB Swiss as they have been mentioned as supporting the JIS standard. The response below is from their US distributor and claims that the DIN 8764 now supersedes the DIN 5260 and is compatible with JIS. They also state that all PB Swiss drivers conform to this new standard.

[Zeug],

I was able to get a response from my contact at the factory in Switzerland:

We [PB] are producing our PH drivers according DIN ISO 8764-1-2004. DIN 5260:1994 is an old norm and not any longer valid.

In other words DIN ISO 8764-1-2004 is the new, improved (tigther tolerances) version of DIN 5260:1994.

The tips of DIN ISO 8764-1:2004 drivers fit perfectly in JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) screws.

So, any of the PB Swiss Tools drivers will work with the JIS screws.

Thanks,

Craftsman has a set of chisel drivers that are made in Japan ,rumored to be made by Vessel.
I picked up a set of 2 for $19.99 includes a #2 and a flat, but I have yet to try them.
Just another option......

Vessel is what I use on Jis and phillips. They grip phillips better than anything else I have tried including Cman, Klein, SO, Mac, Wera, Wiha, and many others. I can't see the difference but it's there.

Moody is the best kept secret if you need small electronics scredrivers of any profile.

I love my Vessel 220 and PB Swiss, but the 220 series of Vessel is more addictive than anything else IMHO...

THANKS! That's a very helpful contribution, and good to know.

Not a rumor, but not chisel drivers either. The Craftsman impact screwdrivers are positively rebadged Vessel Impactas, at a better price than direct from Vessel.

A few weeks ago, I encountered a JIS screw at work, and was SO glad I had one of these handy. Someone else had stripped it out with a Phillips, and push as hard as you wanted, it seemed like it was a lost cause. The Vessel driver took it right out as if it were undamaged.

Moody makes some small electronics JIS screwdrivers. FYI.

Yep. I've got the small eyeglass style screwdriver with interchangeable tips. It's great on the 000 and 00 sized stuff.

There are in fact NO JIS screwdrivers made anymore. The JIS standard was incorporated into a DIN specification which is what everybody (except America of course) uses. You are right about the "JIS screwdrivers" working perfectly on Phillips screws as well. All of TOPTUL's Phillips screwdrivers and bits are made to the DIN standard and they, and all of the European brands as well that use the DIN standard too, work great in both JIS and Phillips screws. Why anybody would use anything else is a mystery to me.

I beg to differ on the part about "all of the European brands". I have Wera, Wiha and Whitt and none of those fit jis screws or even phillips like the Vessels do. I don't know what it is about their phillips tips but they absolutely rock.
