Bought our townhome as a shortsale(I'm an agent) just over 3 years ago. Did some painting inside, but never got to the garage, until now.

Its a basic single car garage. 19x10ish. 10' ceilings, so decently high. High enough that I can do some upper storage shelving. Going to be a pretty slow moving thread, as winter is coming. I hope to have the entire garage painted before it gets real real cold and will do Rust Bullet flooring come spring time. I have two rubber storage cabinets that are around 3' tall, that I will probably turn into a work bench along back wall. You can kind of see them in a few of the pics, but not well. At some point down the road, I plan on getting a Harbor Freight 46" tool chest.

For shelving, I am going to have either one or two shelves on the back wall(gray). The wire shelving in the pictures, will go above the garage door track on both right and left sides.

Here are a few pics of where I am starting. Really, its just packed with stuff. A few older craftsman series tools(drill press, table saw, planer(all 1950's). Boxes, toys, junk etc....The empty space on back wall under shelving is where I have had the two rubber cabinets, they are on the left of this picture(where the blue drink and propane tank are sitting on)

Did do some tool storage on the wall last year, but needs to be reworked again.

Not a great photo, but looking from the back wall out. Space above the garage door track, so I can add shelving.

Cutting in around the top for painting the ceiling.

Cant remember if this is after first or second coat of ceiling, but its done now :) Its not perfect as there are some joint lines you can see. But its not to to bad overall. Good enough for me.

This is for sure after second coat.

Rear wall is painted(have since done a second coat and is completed)

Thats about it for now. I need to go get more gray, as I am doing the lower 3' in gray, with a 4-6" red strip and white on the top 6 1/2'.

I also am going to remove the dome light and add a LED 3-4' light.

Updates as they happen :)

Thinking about doing something a bit different, over the straight strip.

Thoughts? My only thought at this point, is I would probably NOT run the white at the top on the back wall. So, would that look dumb, or should I just go ahead and paint the top couple inches white to make it really flow?

See attached below, they are awesome paint products lol, took only a few minutes, so speed was my friend ha

Got a small bit done today. Left wall, which has entry door to house, plus my pegboard. Basically, it was the harder of the two walls, but the least amount of area to do prep/paint. Just got coat number 1 on a few minutes ago. Will get coat two tomorrow and will then start working on the lower color.

Also, I think I am going to go with this design. Way less work, and I will have shelves along the top rear wall, so the stripe would be hidden 99% of the time. So this will make me happy.

After a few coats of paint on the long walls, and not good results(patches showing thru etc). I resorted to redoing it, this time a coat of primer went down. About to do my color coat now. Should be good, as the primer alone has covered all patches.

Pictures to come later. Slow but steady progress

I like the color idea though with that small of a space it might be a tick on the dark side. Also the more light you can have the better

Thanks for the comments. The color in person, is a little bit lighter than pictures lead it on to be. Majority of the side wall is going to be white(plus ceiling), so I am hoping the small amount of gray on the walls will still keep it fairly bright. Our garage door also has the top row as windows, plus LED lighting upgrade too. :fingerscrossed:

Also, Red stripe is going to be small. Roughly 5" wide, so that will give a little more white to hopefully keep it as bright as it can be.

Ok that should help. Being in the kitchen and building industry I see a lot of bad color ideas in small spaces

Gotcha! Yea, I am in real estate, so I see the good, the bad and the ugly as well. Just today actually, saw a home with Maroon walls and ceiling....It was finished attic space, so the ceiling sloped up, it was just odd and really dark.

Lower gray will go on tomorrow. Wanted to do tonight, but I am just beat. Tomorrow it is, will finally look like I am making some progress. Once I get this side done, I will be able to move everything from the center to the back left corner and really knock the other wall out quickly, since I will have a bit more room. Not a ton of prep to do on last wall thankfully and its just the wall. No doors or anything to work around.

Ran out of paint and made a late run to the store for more gray paint. Was only able to get the cut in areas done today. Tomorrow I should have the grey done(on one wall) while the son is down for nap. Minus the Red, I should have fairly good idea how light/dark it may be(also without LED light upgrade).

Looks good so far. reds are hard and get some sample jars of paint as they tend to look different from the color chips when you actually paint the wall

Yes they are! I have one that I like on the sample, however, the walls are eggshell and the small red only comes in gloss.

Im thinking I may go with a little bit of a darker red. Not maroon, but not like a standard red car.

Red Paint - Check
LED Light - Check

Also just ordered a Waterloo Chest(top section) from lowes for $35 bucks(onsale for $50, then a $15 off of $50 coupon). Its not the best quality tool chest, but it will be better than what I have(nothing besides peg board) and will work well on top of the workbench I am putting together.

Came home after checking out their LED selection and ordered the LED light. Will be ready for pickup in an hour or so. Same thing, $50 dollars, and then a $15 off of $50 coupon was used.

I went with these. At the store you can hardly look at them they are so bright, so I have no doubt, itll be enough for my single.

Slowly coming along.

Ditto. I knew I wanted to paint mine. But after going thru thread after thread, I decided I wanted to do a little more than just paint it. So, painting, coating floor, building shelves, workbench etc. The list grows weekly lol

Once I get the workbench done, I may grab a 19-20" tv to hang from the shelving above it and just use an antenna for watching sports while in the garage.

Made some progress...Spent far to long and far to much paint on this red stripe....Next wall, I am actually going to do the top white, the red stripe then the gray bottom, instead of white top, gray bottom and rep stripe. The red took forever to cover the gray. It may actually still be slightly visible, but I leave tomorrow for 10 days and its going to be getting much colder, so I wanted to get the frog tape off the wall, since I have put a number of coats of paint on it. Just a few crappy pics. When I get back, I am going to do the 4ft LED install, so I will have better light at night.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving week! I am not sure how much I'll be on the boards over the next 10-12 days.

Thanks! Its been a pain. Besides the painting of it, getting the tape straight is a chore. The lines are very crisp and I am happy overall now that its done. Just one more side to do....

If you have not done this before, do this. Put your tape down, for example in my case, take the white paint(top color) and paint the bottom of the tape(the top of the stripe), to lock the tape down. Do the same for the bottom piece of tape, but paint the top edge(in my case gray), to lock the tape down, then paint the stripe its color(red in my case). Its pretty easy and any paint that bleeds thru the tape, is just from the first time you paint the tape and is the same color as the upper/lower color.

If that doesnt make sense, I'll try and find the page I found that explained it.

Thanks. Glad to be out west in the warmer weather, but wish I was at home getting this completed :)

Sealing and coating floor will for sure be a spring project.

But, after walls, I plan on doing the shelving. Should really help out, having over double the amount of shelf space!

Just got in from doing a bit of work while little man was napping. Since I got the harder wall painted, i was able to move everything off the unpainted wall, to start prepping. When all holes were patched, I moved into the lighting. Currently, just using one 48" led light fixture. I want another, but my garage only had one light to begin with, so to not get to invoked with adding another, in just going to stick with one for now.

Made a huge difference!!

Can't wait! Lol, unfortunately, I had no other choice, but everything is dust covered. Will be so nice to get it all cleaned and in order!

Need to go buy some 2x4's for shelving

Thanks guys! I find myself just opening the door and turning light on just to see the new lighting lol.

One thing I forgot to mention in the initial light post the other day, is that the cutout for the old dome light, is larger than the width of the light. So, need to figure something out for that. There is about a 1/2" on both sides.

Sadly the colder weather is here. Mid 50's as a high most days. I may go out to night and do some Sanding of the patching I did the other day. Need to get that done so I can primer and get this thing painted asap.

Will do the shelving once paint is done, as I can do that when it's colder.

Also, just found a product called easy stripe. I may try that on the other side. 36' x 5" roll is 32 dollars, BUT there is no taping off to worry about!!!

Yea, now my reds won't match, most likely, but will do one side and see how it lasts. Now, to bust out prep, primer and painting. Very glad I'm on the east side now!

Got my order in! Looks good, red is slightly lighter than the Red I painted, but thats ok. It says to wait 2-3 weeks before applying on new paint. So, I have a few weeks before I can install it.

You should just cover the painted stripe with this one then it will be the same. LOL

Thats what I plan on doing come spring time, if it holds up :)

The 36' roll isnt enough to do both sides sadly. I think each side needs roughly 24' worth, so I will need to buy a second roll regardless.

Fingers crossed, I just did the last of the sanding.... Will take a better look at it tomorrow. If so, will wipe it down and get primer on the wall asap!

Well, got wall primed today!! So nice, even with primer on the wall! No more tan drywall and mud walls! Just a small 2x2 area over the garage door that's still tan(just cant reach it right now).

Gonna be near 70 tomorrow, so hoping it dries so I can possibly do a coat of white!!

Boy, If its not one thing, its always another....

So, got the white paint on the wall and it was drying. So, I decided I would put the garage switch back on the wall(just had it hanging). Put two drywall anchors in, get bottom screw in and as I was tighenting the top screw, the wires must short or something and the garage goes crazy(up/down/up/down etc the last down was the killer....all I hear was glass breaking and shattering and seeing the door extremely bent!!

Didnt take pictures, but it was a mess. It torn the aluminum in a spot up top, but I have it bent pretty much back into place....NOT WHAT I HAD PLANNED ON DOING lol Replaced the glass with some plastic plexi glass type stuff. I replaced the other side last year when the garage door got stuck to the ground and then shot up. I should've changed both sides then, but I just did the one. This stuff is awesome. The one side I did replace already, did not break, crack or anything.
