Buddy... when you bring aftermarket tuners into the mix you open Pandora's box. I can make my toilet outrun a Ferrari with enough money. Take a look at LPE and the monster Corvettes they produce. Anything can be fast, and what's with starting the Ford vs. Chevy bull? I mean did you not see the motor in the race car? I used to have a '97 Cobra (hence the screename), but I prefer a car that is more well rounded than a Mustang so I moved on to Corvettes 6+ years ago.
That's the kind of deal I'm looking for... I figured there'd be depressed prices given the economy, but nothing in my local area I can justify buying.

My new Mountain top chest will be here today between 1 and 3 PM; once I get it un-wrapped and inspected, I would love to write a vendor review on it as compared to my other Matco Tool Boxes. Anyone interested in seeing / reading all about that??

Is this worth $100 assuming the drawers and rollers/casters work?
I'm pretty sure I have that exact box. It was MABYE $150 new seven years ago.
It didn't age very well and the drawers don't work so hot anymore. To be fair, the slides probally could use an oiling

If it has ball bearing slides yes. If it has friction slides then no.

I have a KRL1003 I found advertised on Craigslist. I recall I paid less than a 1/3 of new retail price. While it was not less than 2K I think I got a pretty good deal. It also came with a Snap On tool cart. Link is below.

The deals are out there if you are patient and are willing to travel a little to get a good deal.
I have two of those stainless steel Costco boxes too and they are certainly decent quality and a good value but the Snap on box is so much nicer than the Costco boxes.
I'm not a professional mechanic so I was not that familiar with the Span on and Matco toolboxes but as I was shopping for a really nice toolbox I came to appreciate the quality, constuction, and features of the Snap on and Matco boxes.
Of course not everyone needs or is interested in Snap on and fortunately there are lots of other toolboxes to choose from.

You must have VERY high prices.
I've sold that box with friction, in perfect shape for 35 and felt guilty.
In BB about 70.

Here is a new 56" stainless on CL for $500!

Most of the replies have pretty much summed up my viewpoint except for one. I don't turn wrenches for a living, but I use my tools just about every day. As a casual user, I still can see the benefit of owning a better box.
I've lived with Craftsman boxes for 20 years and never thought anything of it. I never owned anything better until two years ago I bought a Macsimizer triple bay at an auction. (Caught me at a weak moment, and the cash was burning a hole in my pocket.) There isn't a day that goes by that I don't smile to myself when I open those smooth gliding drawers. To be honest, I take better care of my tools now, I think because of the box and how organized and clean all my tools look in it.
I guess if you have never owned a nicer box, a cheap one is just fine. Once you own a nicer box, it's hard to go back. I'm surprised how many of my buddies always comment on the box when they visit the shop. They think I must have won the lottery or something.
BTW, I own a Corvette too. Nice car, but not on the same quality level as a MAC or Snap-On box. The MAC is more akin to my BMW, smooth, clean, quiet, beautiful, and bulletproof.
Did I mention that I love that box?

Turns out the Matco works better in the "depth-challenged" garage as it's 24" deep vs. 29" for the S-O.Cobra, your dad looks very pleased. I don't think you could've went wrong with either box that you were considering.

Those Matco boxes have always had very nice drawer handles - well rounded and plenty deep enough to get your fingers under them.

This is exactly how I feel about the box I bought this summer. I had a Craftsman 3 piece box with a total of 10 drawers. The top and middle were only about 12" deep, and the bottom only had 3 drawers. I needed space. It was in basically brand new shape still though, so I sold it to a guy at work for $200
This is of course only after I bought a box to flip. I found this Mac box, 19 drawer thing on CL and got it for $525. I had three offers when I had a garage sale for up to $850, but I had absolutely fallen in love with it and wouldn't take less than $1k. It might not have been worth that, but it was worth it to me. Tons of space and the drawers are so solid and smooth. This thing is probably 15-20 years old, plenty of paint wear (all the corners are worn through the paint, but smooth), but it still works like a champ. There is nothing low quality about it in my opinion. Yeah, its friction slides except for the bottom drawer in each box, but personally now that its full, those are my least two favorite drawers. They just roll too free. The friction drawers have just a little drag and I like that I actually have to open and close them.
I've become a tool snob in this last year. I no longer think C'man makes the best of everything. And when it comes to tool boxes, I look at them about monthly at sears, and there is something that really bugs me about every box they have. I love my Mac box, have it organized nicely, and in 10 years you'll see a difference in the condition of my tools because of it. I'll never be able to "downgrade" again. Also with as many Snap On double banks as I see, I'm sure I'll be toting one home within the next couple years, that I just couldn't pass up. I'd have brought a top and bottom harley box home a month or so ago if they auction wasn't cash or ohio check only. It went for a song, like $2300 if I recall.
My current box is just about perfect for my tiny 1 car garage. Fits exactly where I need it to fit:

Most of those videos have all the guts of the lock removed. Finger presser will turn them over.
But cheap import cabinet locks are easy to pick. Unless you are my old boss.
I share shop space with a welder/locksmith (I know, I know.....he is very good at both though!!) He has tried to pick the lock on my KRL1023 and has not been able to do it. He has all of the fancy tools for it too. He said that the barrel on Snap On locks is an odd size and that is what makes them so hard to pick.

A guy I worked with had a garage fall on his old KRL1000, we are talking a 1 ft I beam falling directly on top of it, he still uses it to this day. That was proof enough for me that my decision to buy a 1000 series KRL was a good one. As long as I take care of it I should never have to buy another tool box in my lifetime. Snap-on tool boxes are no joke.

I am a professional that makes it with a Cman box I bought used 15 yrs ago for 75$, I wouldn't mind a better box, ain't gonna go for 8 k though. Maybe a used one, have seen decent new stuff in the 1500 range that looked like it would work fine.

let me reverse the question for the original poster,
how can you justify spending $200 for a low quality toolbox that doesn't hold alot of the most common size tools? An auto mechanic cannot use that kind of box because it physically does not meet the mechanics needs for storage.
I am not very wealthy and i can get by with what i can afford. i'd rather spend my money on a used large snap on box then buying 3 top and bottom craftsman boxes.
has anyone seen that picture with the huge dump truck on top of the snap on boxes? I buy for quality and craftsmanship, craftsman just doesn't offer anything i want.
