I do have a suggestion, toe kick. Makes it way more comfortable to stand there with an extra couple inches. I made my 2x4 risers to sit back 2.5" from the front of the cabinets, also left a 3.5" overhang on the counter top to clamp to or just more surface area. Super over those cabinets!!

Killinger: is that 3 pieces of 3/4 inch plywood or a 3/4 inch plywood on top of some other type of wood. looking good and i'm betting those cabinets are not light so hopefully you won't be too sore tomorrow.

keep taking pictures and loving the look of those old cabinets. i've got a drawer of old RR spikes and files and maybe we can exchange a few flat rate boxes for some of those nuts and bolts you might not need?

It's 2x6 frame with 3/4 ply on top. All screwed from the bottom with kreg jig and glue. No screws from the top. I'll finish off the edges with some hardwood. When I do the next one I'll shoot some pics of how I do it.

I haven't had a chance to sort all the goodies that were in the cabinets yet but I'll keep you posted!

Thanks! I was gonna do a toe kick but the cabinets are not very deep and are not solid on the bottom. I wanted as much surface area as possible to support the weight. I left a 2.5 inch overhang on the counter top for clamping thou. Very comfortable as is.

I knew when I saw the cabinets how cool this could turn out. I still have a ways to go. I have to finish the top on this main one. Then I have 2 more that are going to be 75" long or so. One will sit on my back wall and one will sit where my chest of drawers that has the metal frame is. Then I'll have 2 individual cabinets left that will sit alone and be 2 different stations. One will be for one of my bench top drill presses but will hold all my drill bits and taps. The other will be my bench grinder and buffer station.

Not much work done in the shop this week. Got some old stuff moved out and made some room. That's about all I had time for. However, I was able to pick up another project for a song! New jeep trailer! Needs a lot of work but I'm ok with that. Get to do it my way. Won't be able to start on it till I get the shop set up but should be fun!

Got some time today to get more done with the cabinets. This is the single drill press stand on the end of the long run of cabinets. My floor is really out of wack so it's about 1/2 lower than the long run. What do you do? O well. Anyway I took a couple of different angles to give you an idea of what's going on.





Mock up of the next bench. Think I'm going 8 ft long top on this one. Have about 6.5" overhang on each end but with how I'm building the tops should be no problem. I can't fit 4 cabinets in this space so 3 will do. It will be nice to have a full 8' back here.

Got the columbian pattern makers vise mounted as well. So awesome! Been useing it already!



That's it for today. Once I get this all done and the shop cleaned and arranged how I want. I'll break out the good camera and take some good pictures.

Thanks! Ya I noticed not much for replies but I figure I'll just keep plugging away anyway. They will find it sooner or later. I got some more pics and shot quit a bit of video today. I'll post the pics next but video might take a day or 2 to edit and upload.

Top construction starts with drilling the pocket holes. I will use these to attach the plywood to the 2x6 frame.



Long rails layed out.



Spacers layed out. Adds a lot of stubility to the top and makes it so I have no soft spots.





All screwed in place.



I finished up by laying the top down and marking all the holes to attach the top to the cabinets. Then I stand it up and pre drill holes. Next I lay it down and lag bolt it in place.

I forgot to take the final picture. I'll do it tomorrow. Only a few to go! Thanks for looking!

Thanks! No crazy update at this time. Did get the single cabinet set up. It was by far the roughest. At a later date I will have to re do the bottom of the cabinet as it is really messed up. It will work for now. I'll snap some pictures tomorrow .

I only have one more bench to do then I can really get things orginized. I have started a little but haven't even scratched the surface of the storage possibilities. I'll deff shoot pictures of what and how I store things.

Congratulations on the cabinet scores. The last photo came out with a super shop set up and it looks like a great place to work. I am lusting on the lathe, sander, and drill press and that grinder with the brushes has really caught my eye as well.

I'm not 100% on what they used them for? I think they were inside road vehicles for tool storage? Also see one in our supply room at the armory. They use it for tools there as well.

Those cabinets look exactly like the one issued with the TOOL SET, Common Number One, Organizational Maint Set. These sets were issued to Company/Battery and Battalion Maint sections. They were designed to be deployable with the unit maint section, so yes they would have been on the 2 1/2 ton maint truck. I had my eye on them for years!!!
Never saw one at the DOL they were getting rid of though.
