Re: Knipex Bottle Openers: Possible Group Buy?

thanks guys

How many are we up to on confirmed payments? Sorry for being nosy, but this is a moderately exciting escape from the work day!

about 24 participants

40 openers

here's the breakdown of how many people ordered:

attachment.php

most people (65%) ordered one.

about $1080 received

I filled out the form and paid for 2.Thanks for setting this up.

Mike

hey mike, i got your payment, but i didn't get your form submission for some reason. i also didn't get your goods&services fee.

can you please check your email?

I submitted my forum for 1

hey hudd1256, similar situation for you.

i got your payment, but i didn't get your form submission for some reason.

can you please fill it out again and click submit at the end? ty

edit: thanks hudd1256, i have your form information now. nothing else needed from you.

^What he said, thanks a bunch for putting this together. If it helps us get to 50 I will take another vs a refund of the difference.

totally up to you. just:
  • send $30 (F&F) extra for each one
  • and please update your form submission to reflect the new qty and payment amount. look in your email for a link that lets you edit it. if you got multiple emails, use the link in the most recent one or it might say invalid link. please don't fill out the form from scratch because it will generate a second record, and i use these records to generate shipments later.

also, i'll probably just extend the group buy deadline if we don't get to 50. so don't worry about it unless you actually want more :)

we're at 56 openers, so we should be able to get free shipping from germany. :)

I'm in for one.

How is it I'm just seeing this thread, and I visit every day!

i started it in the tools forum as an informational thread about knipex bottle openers with a group buy thought at the end. i wasn't actually sure if people would be interested.

it evolved into a group buy thread, and then i asked to have it moved to hot deals. should've asked sooner.

Anyword from Knipexfans? Price difference between Knipexfans and Jens is $4.04 per opener. At 57 openers that’s $230.28. Surely we could arrange shipping from Germany for less than that.

in for 1.

one thing I didn't see is that if knipexfans ships direct to the US, we don't have to pay VAT. At least, I don't pay VAT when I buy stuff from euro stores.

It might require an email to them to do a manual refund for the amount (since they're assuming 'local'-only customers) but I'm pretty sure there's a law against charging non-EU citizens VAT - there's a law about everything else over there...

they don't ship to the us
at this point, the main plan is to use Option 2 (working with jensputzier.com)

In for 2. I filled out the form and sent the money by PayPal. Hopefully I sent it as the friends and family.

Thanks for setting this up!

So definitely submitted the form... But I didn't get a confirmation email? I'm mildly confused/don't want to add complications by submitting again

did you check your spam filter?

anyway, don't worry about it. after i close up the group buy, i'll go through the payments and cross reference the form data. i'll contact people if i'm missing info from them.

i'm closing this tonight at midnight btw

Everyone always says to check the SPAM folder and it's never in there, but low and behold I checked mine and it was there too. Thanks!

so far, we're at 77 openers, but there's probably a few more because i think some people sent payment without submitting their form.

i'm closing it up in 20 minutes (midnight central time), but if someone really wants one, i'm flexible. there's nothing special about this deadline. i'm just trying to get a firm count on these openers so i can start calculating things.

oh wait, i guess the there is one special thing about it. merry christmas! :)

edit: where's my christmas spirit? i might as well let it run one more day.

THIS GROUP BUY CLOSES FRIDAY DEC 25 11:59PM CENTRAL TIME (UTC -6)

transparency update:

since we're getting so many now, i'm thinking that i might be able to get the price down lower by ordering direct from knipexfans.

assuming 80 openers...

the unit cost from knipexfans is $4 lower than JP.
although international shipping from knipexfans isn't free like it is with JP, that still gives me $320 (80*4) of wiggle room.

i didn't expect to get so many openers, so import tax has to be considered now, too.

my research is telling me that this falls under HTS code 8205.51.3030.

this code provides for:

  • 8205 Handtools (including glass cutters) not elsewhere specified or included; blow torches and similar self-contained torches; vises, clamps and the like, other than accessories for and parts of machine tools or water-jet cutting machines; anvils; portable forges; hand- or pedal-operated grinding wheels with frameworks; base metal parts thereof:
    • .51 Household tools, and parts thereof:
      • .30 Of iron or steel: Other (including parts)
        • 30 Kitchen and table implements

ordinarily, this is assessed at 3.7% ad valorem.

for 80 openers, that's:
  • 40.53usd for 13.69usd (11.20eur) (knipexfans excl VAT)
  • 47.01 for 15.88usd (12.99eur) (knipexfans incl VAT)
  • 59.18 for 19.99usd (JP)

plus DHL will probably slap a $15 convenience fee on top of that. and maybe a $27.23 MPF.

for a sec, i got scared wondering if some stupid new (trump?) tax would apply, but i scanned XII 98 and 99 and couldn't find anything applicable.

can any HTS gurus confirm?

i could also consider trying to split that into two shipments to dip below the $800 de minimis (tax free), but that would probably increase the shipping. without knowing the exact package weights and dimensions, it's hard for me to know for sure if we'd come out ahead doing it like that.

anyway, a new potential estimate:

Option 1: current cost estimate from knipexfans.shop:
  • item cost: 12.99eur (incl 16% VAT) = 15.95usd
  • domestic DE shipping: free
  • DE → USA shipping: 157usd (9kg, 12"x17"x8")?
  • import tax: 80 openers + MPF + DHL convenience fee = 80*15.95*0.037 + 27.23 + 15 = 89.45usd
  • domestic USA shipping: 3.30usd (estimated based on one bottle opener, 10"x11" bubble mailer, 3.7oz weight, IL → CA)
  • domestic shipping supplies: 0.25usd
  • overall: (80*15.95 + 157 + 89.45)/80 + 3.3 + 0.25 = 22.59usd
