Well, after doing a bit more research I have realized the ladder they purchased for me is really too small for my use. It's designed for the small opening in the ceiling in say a closet. It's only rated for 250lb max (that's my weight right now) :(

I need to visit Home Depot and exchange it (with some additional $) for a larger/heavier capacity unit. The bigger ladders hold the capacity of 375lbs and a much bigger hole to move things through, which I think would be better for garage use. So I'm thinking this one.

Kyle,
I used 1/2" plywood for the storage areas (where I don't normally walk) and 5/8" for the walkways. Most of the trusses in my attic are made with 2x4s so I put 2x2 spacers on them to ensure there was enough room for the R-19 insulation to expand to its full thickness. I screwed the plywood down so it is fairly easy to remove for wiring upgrades and other stuff buried in the attic space.

Depending on the size of your access opening, you may have to cut the plywood. I have the 24"x48" rough opening so 2'x8' sections fit just fine.

I have two attic ladders. One came with the house and has wooden rails and treads. I installed the second one in the garage to allow access to the space in the gable over the garage. It is the same design as the one you show and it is a good solid ladder. I had to be careful locating it so it cleared all the garage door and opener tracks but it's a great addition. Installation was pretty simple, other than getting it up into the opening -- alone. I think it's a two-person job unless you are very patient and very stubborn.

Bob,

Thank you for your reply. Your recommendation on the thickness of the plywood sounds good. I'll check the insulation to see if I need the 2x2's, but again that is helpful advise. Thank you again!

I used my new Snap-on stool in the garage this weekend. :)

I'll get some other pics of it from different angles, this was just the quick pic I took of it while working on a car project.

I found a lateral office cabinet with drawers is the perfect place to put shoes, boots, bulk purchases of pop, beer, ect. Once it's closed it looks neat & clean. I also mounted wheels to the bottom so that I could move it around the garage easily if needed.

k1106, that's a good idea. We always have misc large items. I'll have to keep my eye out for a lateral office cabinet. I was actually suggesting some kind of cabinet for the entry room (large room as you enter our house) where she can store ALL of her stationary, invitation making stuff and so on. There seems to be a ton of it around the house. Looks like I'll be looking for two different kinds of cabinets now. Thanks for the input!

I have the same snap-on rebranded stool and it is actually awesome. I weight 300lbs and it seems to hold up good. I also got the cheap LED work light with the small stand and it is AWESOME! Very bright and I dropped it off the top of my outboard motor 6' onto concrete and the lights all still work and nothing broke!

Excellent garage, I like.

Thank you both.

How are we doing in here Kyle?

I hope your not slacking :) j/k

Lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's not slacking but planning in head a lot lol

I'm still here, just have had some other house/car projects going on that have taken my time. We played musical rooms with the kids after my oldest started college. So for a while it looked like we were moving :yikes: We have a pretty big entry room to our house and it was stacked with items like beds, boxes, dressers, etc from the three bedrooms.

Just so you guys don't think I've been slacking, here are some pics of my in-house project. This is what my daughter's room looked like during and when finished. (she'll be 5 this weekend)

As for the garage, I just haven't made time to exchange my attic ladder for the proper one. I did pick up a 2x6 to cut a piece off for mounting my retractable hose reel. I want to mount it while in the attic with the attic ladder, so I can run my air lines.

Also speaking of hose reels, I'm also considering some kind of retractable water hose reel. I've got a software system in the garage near the single bay garage door, that I could connect directly to the software system.
I'd mount it in this area:

Anyone have any suggestions on a water hose retractable reel? I can always move the brooms, etc.

Just found your thread tonight, Kyle. It's encouraging to see another making progress, much like what I'm going through in my smaller garage. It really does help to see some progress, even if there is a ton of work to do. I've been through my first purge this past two months or so and have uncovered the walls enough to paint, which is almost done. Lights are up( and yes , my cords need work), the electrical is finished, for now and I have routed a hardline from my storeroom compressor into the garage. Fortunately, both the softener and hot water heater are also in that room off the garage. Attic access ladder was installed years ago and I do keep bulky , but light , stuff up there. I'm really starting to enjoy doing all the work in my space, even if it isn't related to my car or fabrication hobbies. I don't have to worry about shoes in my garage as my Japanese wife doesn't follow exactly( we wear slippers in the house), but it seems like they're all over our bedroom, haha. That's my next project.

Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing! Subscribed.

PS. I live in Chandler, too.

Nice work in the Kids room. It pays to keep the wife happy.:bounce: I do a lot of Ikea projects around the house and they really make rooms more usable. As far as a water hose, you can use an air hose. Most of the they have a strong enough spring. They flow a little less, but not really a big deal. I wanted to use one on the outside of the house, but the wife didn't like the look of it.:(

rixtrix1,

Howdy neighbor! Since you're in the area, I'd like to meet up some day and check out your garage (and show you my mess). But you are correct, progress is still progress. :)

Thanks Alex.. yeah, the room turned out pretty nice. And "happy wife, happy like!". As for the water hose, I'll keep looking around. I also want to use that area to store some detailing products, so got more measuring/planning to do.

Great work on kids room and as far as hose reels thinking put tank closest to door and both air and water reels above it side by side high enough to service tank. Imo

Have a good one, Gerard

Sounds good, Kyle. Give me a few more weeks to get some more organizing done, maybe even some cabinets up and I'll PM ya.

Gerard,

Thank you for the suggestion. The air reel is going to be mounted between the doors on the ceiling, so I can use it either the two car bay, or the one car bay or outside. The water hose reel I will mount near the soft water system there on the side. It makes more sense for me to have the water over there, it's closer to where I wash the cars and all of the car care products are over there in those cabinets.

Hey Ric,

When we do meet up I should have a little more progress on my newest additions for my garage. :)

I haven't been making a lot of progress in the garage, but I have been buying items to help make my garage more functional.

I like the light on the bench grinder, gonna borrow that idea ;)
I have something I can mount on mine. It is on my to do list already.

From what I can see, a number of the grinders came like that. I'm just happy mine had one on it, and it still works.

Thanks Taurus. At this point no garage improvements at this point in time. I've just been trying to get my vise(s) setup and get a shed installed in the backyard. I realized that the attic space I will have once I put the ladder in won't be enough storage space. So the shed is the next project.

Quick update. So while doing some reorganizing, I started working on the clean-up/restore of the old US vise I purchased awhile back. Some of the members here have used electrolysis to clean their steel parts, so I figured I'd give it a shot. This is what it looked when I hooked it up.
IMG_20140427_103659.jpg

This is how it looked after a few hours:
IMG_20140428_142616.jpg

I'll be pulling it out and starting on the restore here tonight. Then after I finish cleaning it up and painting it, it's going on the bench. :)

Thanks, Kyle. Wish I had thought of this before I spend $80 on Evaporust. which doesn't work as good as I thought on the heavy rusted parts I had. Looks like it's a real easy deal to use. I need to make a blast cabinet for my sandblaster, too.

Ric, I haven't pulled my vise out yet.. but after seeing all the **** that was built up on top, I'm SURE it has worked. I was going to pull it out tonight but didn't get to it.

What is it you're needing to clean?

I have a bunch of 8" scaffold casters I'm using to make a body dolly for my Malibu, to make it easier to move it around the garage while I redo the suspension and start doing the bodywork. Rolling it in and out on it's wheels on a slanted driveway, then jacking it up every time I need more room to do something isn't an option I want to use. With the dolly I can move it anywhere in the garage while it's about two feet off the floor with an easy push. I built the dolly about 20 years ago to back half the car and it's been sitting outside and rusting ever since.

I said the heck with it Sunday and sandblasted and painted everything, making a huge mess of the side yard, but it's done.

Bummer, you could have dropped them off with me and I'd have had them clean in a day or so.. just leaving them in the tub. ;)
