Menards has Sylvania drop in bulbs 17 watt 2200 lumens for $55 for a 10 pack.

I installed them in a T8 4 tube fixture and measured 28.1% increase in LUX 55" to the measured work surface with 43% decrease in power consumption.

Installed these drop in bulbs in a several Menards T8 shop lights. They work for several minutes and shut off. Appear they over load the ballasts . Turn off reset and it happens again. If have used the FEIT drop in bulbs in theses same fixtures without a problem. They ( Sylvania) did work ok in the four bulb fixture. So the Sylvania bulbs are going back !! . Not worth the hassle at $55 per box even with the good specs when the they worked. Not worth the risk over the long haul.

I have several 4' fixtures some good and some with bad ballast, this would be a great way to make them useful isn't it?
What does it take to rewire them for LED?

Just throwing a suggestion.. These are amazing. I wired all mine together, they was on sale for 45 + 10% military discount if you have it. Got them for around 42 bucks each out the door. Installed 5 in my garage.

after - (when garage door is open, it covers u 2 of my leds strips) I put 1 over each 10x10 slab of concrete. and 1 in the corner. sorry for mess. been painting walls, and getting it ready for the next step of progress

no gaps of light, everything is 100% illuminated in person. each pull 40 watts i think. so 200 watts total for all my garage light. instant on, and looks really nice. ran the wires thru the roof. so theres no wires showing.

I'm using the 4ft led lights (frosted) off ebay... I have a 20x20 garage with white metal siding interior and, right now, I'm using 10 lights in it and its likely bright enough.. I'll end up with 15 or 16 of them in total...

The lights just come off a sale price of $8.50 each without the plugs... If you order these lights get the plugs from them also, unless you can get male plugs cheap..

Here's my question. I've got a standard 25Dx20W with 8.5' ceilings. I bought 8 of the costco 4'led lights. Questions are is that going to be overkill? A light every 5' down each side (2 car garage) or go with just 6 lights and do it every 6.25'. And do I use the supplied chain to hang or should I flush mount?

I have similar size garage and I used 6. I think it is adequet, but YMMV it is your personal taste. If you already got 8, I would just install all 8. Perhaps use 6 as main and two as spotlight over workbench...etc. You can't go wrong with having more lighting. I flush mounted mine, simply screwed them into joists. Two screws per light, they are not going anywhere. Now I want to cleanly hide the wires, still weighing my options. Either galvanized conduit or monoprice.com cable tray.

Well.I'm going to go with all 8. Best way since the garage is 25' deep and each cord to link the lights is 5' the math works out perfectly.

Hello all, just a heads up on the Rural King lights. The ones referenced above are mail order only. I just left the store with 2 that are on display. Very similar light but only 3250 lumens versus the 5000 lumens mail order.

The Rural King model that cajunfirehawk has featured is available in Canada at Princess Auto. Sold under the APL-Akron brand there, and regularly priced at $75/ea (they drop to $50 on sale). I used them in my shop, great lights.

I did not realize it until after I got them but the ones I had ordered had poor power performance and used about 85 watts versus the ones I replaced those with that only draw about 45 watts, the replacements are shown above using my watt tester...but the ones I got the first time seam different from the other poster's $19 lights from rural king?

Yeah I think these are different, i haven't purchased them yet. Lumens per watt isn't that great but the lumens per $ is, if they can be trusted.

I just put up (8) 4ft 3200 Lumen LED's (made my Commercial Electric, from HD), daisy chained together on a single switch.

Garage is a 19x19, with 9ft ceilings. I have six (two rows of three running parallel to each other) going front/back, and then one perpendicular at each end.

My garage has never been brighter, with what I would consider perfect coverage. Best $350.00 I have spent in my garage.

Ah, I see what you were trying to convey.

Don't forget that people pay "dollars" on their electricity bill. So lumen/dollar is the same as "light output / cost to operate".

Very pleased so far...

Even at $30 each, they still have better specs than anything I can get locally. I went ahead and ordered 6 for my shop. I just hope they get here sometime next week so I can install them while on vacation.

I refuse to replace any more T8 - 4 foot florescent tubes. The cold weather seems to shorten the tube life. Some of the twenty ballasts at getting noisy.
Changing to T8-48-LED direct 120 volts (NO BALLAST) time has come.
Our Local LOWES has the T8 LED for $14.99 and possibly a discount for more than 20 units.
I will need to buy the non shunted "tomb-stone" connectors for the LED tubes.
I am going to remove the plastic light diffusers and clean them. If I like the light better without the diffusers, I will put the diffusers in a corner of the attic storage above the shop.
So, Friday is the day I change out the lights.

I found these on Amazon. With these you gut your old ballast, real simple to do. I thought I needed more florescents but after the conversion I have plenty of light .. It's nice to turn on the lights in the winter and they are really bright right away unlike the old florescents. I HAVE TEN FIXTURES IN MY 32 x 40 garage.

My shop is 27' X 34'. I had to go to the city board of variance to get this size. The standard size is 20'X20'. I have 10 double tube fixtures. In our near freezing weather it takes a long time for the fluorescent tubes to "warm-up" then I never get the brightness I want and need. The buzzing ballasts drive me to distraction.

It make sense to convert existing fluorescent fixtures to LED. I am in the process of doing our church.

My shop is a blank slate at this point. I was trying to source some used fixtures and convert them to LED. Then I start thinking, what about a standard light bulb (A19). Just a quick search there a chrome pendant Something like this. Troffer has 4 bulbs, say you go with a 18w/2000lm. For the same price you can get a A19 16w/1600lm. Both the tube and bulb led's are coming down in price and both should be around for a while. At cost (assuming can't find any used) of more fixtures, but same number of bulb and watts used, I can spread the light out. I do have some sources on used troffers, but have not looked for used/free A19 fixtures. Since some of my boxes will be mounted on a pitched (ceiling purlin), I was thinking a pendant type light, plus it would give the shop a little retro type look.

My biggest dilemma is the overhead doors. You can follow the link in my signature to my build thread for more details, there are two bays side by side. The shop is 24' deep, so when the bay doors are open, they cover half of the ceiling. The only place to attach lights in that area is where the overhead door tracks attach to some "hanging" angle iron. In OK summers can get warm and I can see the doors being open. But the height will only be about 7 to 8 feet.

I have the Sams club 4' in the garage and the Costco 4' in my basement, I like the white light the Sams fixture puts out better then the yellower light of the Costco 4' fixture.
