OK first time I've seen this thread and OH MY GOD - FREAKIN' WOW!!! Is all I can say. I laughed, I cried, I kissed 5 bucks goodbye - READ WHY!!!

At first I was like: "Dudes digging that trench by hand - how must know nothing!" "Dude also thinks it'll be 14 grand!"
So, I bet my wife 5 bucks you'd be dead before you finished!
By time you where adding siding I was like "Hey, this guys knows a few things" and then the roof and wiring and more went up and I said: "Hey this guys got skills!!"

Then your cousin got creamed, without insurance yet - and I cried (well, almost..)

Then I saw the finished product, with the nice drywall, the incredible epoxy floor, the tool shed, everything just like the drawing...and I kissed my 5 bucks goodbye!!!

What a great front to back thread! An incredible amount of skill you have there. Also great to see you showing and including your stepson in the whole thing - I'll bet he never forgets and will be able to do something like it one day.

I haven't had much this winter to report, other than a boatload of overtime work, so I haven't been around much.
But every cloud has a silver lining right? I got approval from the boss to make the purchase for my 2 post lift It gets ordered in 2 weeks, and I'll post more pics as it goes up. After talking with a salesperson at Greg Smith Equipment, I've decided to go with a Master Series XL-9. I'd still like to have the Atlas 9 (unfortunately, it's gone up $400 in 1 1/2 years), but considering it'll only see hobby use, it should work perfectly for the money.

Yo, PS:

Nice job on reporting. We all are going to use you as inspiration. I didn't ralize you built the same size I want. I go in front of the zoning board on tuesday to see if they let me do it the way I want. If you are bored you can watch me plead my case over the Midland channel. They are also going to stream it to the net. I am the first one to go in front of the board at 6:30.

The only thing I have to say you forgot was more pics of the car hauler I built you. That one shot doesn't do it any justice

Hey Kirk! Good luck on the zoning meeting, guess where I'll be again. Yep, work.
Yeah, now that the garage is done, I'll be using that trailer more this summer to get the bird to/from the track

Also gotta start getting estimates for the next project. Gonna demo the attached garage, extend footings forward 17-18' and reframe it with the back as a recreation room. I'm gonna turn the peak and frame it to match the look of the front of the detached garage. Also gonna be re-roofing, re-siding, extending the deck to the pool, and then remodeling living room, dining room, and kitchen. I might have to contract some out next year.

Then again, the oldest will be 14, maybe he'll want to make some money for his first car...

Just started on building my workbenches. I have to wait til after christmas to finish the doors/drawers and build the 5 wall cabinets. That way they can buy me some tools. They get mad when I don't give them a list and just go buy what I need before the holidays lol. It's a start though anyway.

Mike Holmes would be proud, everything was glued and screwed lol!

Soon I'll have a place for all this **** lol.

Wow, I don't know how I missed this thread before and especially since it was started in '07. But anyways, great job and Kudos for doing everything yourself. It makes it all the more worth it.
On question, why not put a door between the furnace room and the rest of the garage to clean it up some? I would think a small roll up door would work well.

I have the same tool box from kobolt and love it just an fyi the hf side box fits or hangs perfect if you ever need more space or something to do great shop.

Hey all, thanks for the compliments .
That press is a RCBS Pro2000 press. I have 2 single stage presses too. I'm thinking I might fabricate a metal mounting plate so I have a single anchor point but can change out presses depending on what I feel like doing that day. Right now I have all my reloading stuff in my other garage awaiting this bench getting finished before moving it all.

And Kevin54, I have 2 sets of double swinging hinges already, I'm just waiting to grab 2 3-0 door slabs and paint them up (I'm thinking of crossing checkered flags on the doors). It's on the list, hopefully soon after new years.

Now that Christmas is over, and I treated myself to a new 12" sliding compound miter saw and folding miter saw stand, it's time to get back to work on the wall cabinets. Hopefully I'll have them wrapped up and get more pics by about January 10th.

I knew this was gonna be a little tricky because I remember that my drywall bows out into the room a little where it overlaps 4" of exposed concrete block, so I had to get a little creative. I did a lot of sketching on grid paper to make sure everything was gonna make sense when I started cutting.
I knew I wanted to make sure the bases were 24" minimum face-to-back for drawers/glides, so I ran everything around that number. Countertop material at the local builder supply came in 145" and 96" and was 25 1/2" deep. I planned to keep my bench 25" deep and scribe the 1/2" off to make it fit tight to the drywall.

I started out with the back support 2x4, leveled and lagged to the studs.
Then I started building boxes on the ground. I made them 2" less than the cabinet to have a toe-kick. I cut the BC plywood with the 2" overhang. Then I attached a backer and lag bolted the base to the bottom plate behind the drywall.
Verticals and the rest of the top plate came next (make absolutely sure you have them spaced right and plumb, or it'll play hell later with your cabinet door allignment. Then glued and screwed down the top. Now I've read about every thread here about workbenches and I see how overbuilt some are, but I can bounce my body weight on the 36" span that that front 2x4 is covering by itself, and I can tell, I'll never break it.
With 24" cabinet depth, and 25" countertop depth, I used up most of that 1" difference with the 1x2 and 1x3 face frame (I had to run the overhang close due to the anchor points on my reloading press). If I'd known I'd like that Kreg pocket hole jig this much after this project, I'd have opted for the next model up. Makes face frames a snap, can be used to assemble door frames, drawer boxes, you name it.
I did the end faces with 1/2" Blondewood, but you could use whatever you want.
Then it's just a matter of topping the bench with the work surface of your preference and painting if you so choose.

I should have the baseboard moulding finished around the bottom of the cabinets next week (that's why I didn't paint down there) and have the bulk of the wall cabinets painted and mounted. I'll try to get some more pics of the assembly

I used the "Epoxy-Coat" brand epoxy for this.
I love the two-tone myself, but I do notice scratches much easier in the darker stuff.
The rubber surface for the worktop was indeed just a sliced up parking pad.

Ya know, I'm sure you're right. I brought it back from the racetrack and put it up on the lift to take the drag tires off and pull the ******. I probably put them on the wrong sides lol

Well, I diced up 3 sheets of birch yesterday and drillled a whole lotta pocket joints, but I'm starting to get what look like wall cabinets now lol

Yeah, I like that jig. I probably could do the same doing biscuits or dado/rabbit joints, but I'd need a LOT more long clamps and would be limited to how many I could crank out in a day. I had all 5 of these fully glued/assembled in like 2 hours. I could plug the holes, but I don't think they'll bother me for right now. In a kitchen cabinet, yes, but out here, I don't think so.

I managed to get them mounted up tonight for the most part, need a few more lag bolts but still, they're up. I'll work on the corner shelf and face frames tomorrow night. Until I painted them, I was really fighting off the urge to put crown moulding around the top of them, they looked too nice lol

And of course, you can't enjoy time in the toybox without having the necessities
