Do you think that there was a set of these ratcheting wrenches in different sizes or do you think it was a ratchet with different sized hex sockets?? I’ve seen a 7/8 hex ratcheting wrench with different sized hex sockets but not a 5/8 hex ratcheting wrench with hex sockets

This is a rare vintage black and red snap on toolbox from the sixties in good condition.

I found this brass hammer in the yellow-metals scrap bin at Navy City Metals in Gorst around fifteen years ago. Silly scrappers!



I hadn't seen it for maybe two years and then two days ago, I found it behind one of my benches. I'd been wondering where it was. I think the 16 is referring to ounces. It's a very useful size.



Could that be a little tiny E after the 16/ Or, am I just seeing things in the little dings and scratches? That seems pretty small for a date stamp.

I also found a little bundle of small hacksaw blades in the shop recently and they fit this holder pretty well.



I'm guessing there's more of a bend in the rod than intended, but it sure holds the blade tight.

While poking around in the garage recently, I discovered a Snap-on plastic wrench holder I had taken out of service years ago, probably because it had gotten quite brittle and wouldn’t have stood up to much more toolbox service. I believe that bought it off of the Snap-on truck in the late 70s. It seems to hold metric and fractional combo wrenches equally well and I imagine the same holder was sold with both sets. I replaced it with some plastic covered metal wrench racks at some point. After taking pictures, I didn’t want it to crack any more so it is now back in storage.

Picked this up rescently. 1/4" drive Ratchet has '57 date code and is chrome and 1/4" drive sockets have '44 (E) date code and are cadmium.
Im curious on the years this style box was made and if the color is original. I see on the KRA style box the hinges go all the way across from one side to the other and this box has 2 seperate hinges . Heres some pics...

Here are a few of the Snap on pieces I've picked up lately. I got some sockets with the LR 42 but immediately dumped them in with all the other Snap on and couldn't re-identify them The ratchet was badly rusted and is still pretty corroded but it seems to run really smooth. Should be a good user. The little ratcheting wrench I picked up in a free box at a hoarder give away which was nice! That same box also had this old breaker which I believe is 9/32, or maybe 7/16? It's marked M-10-DG.

I have that Rachet but its missing the selector. The Screw is broke off in the hole.

The color is fine. The wartime boxes were grey enamel. I don't know how long they stayed with it after the war, which is not something I have ever tracked. But the boxes I have or have seen are embossed "Socket Wrenches" under the brand and, while they have two hinges, they have three elements, not four.

I could be wrong, but 1/4-drive "E" sockets are pretty uncommon. They were making the ratchet, because it was the same frame as the 9/32-drive with an easy-peasy 1/4-drive plug swap, but I think it took awhile to re-tool to get the other pieces going.

Alll of the tools in my wartime 1/4” drive sets are E except for the breaker bars which are Gs. I’ve been unsuccessful at finding E dated breaker bars (TM-10-D) but it’s not for a lack of looking.

Estate sale find today. No. 71N ratchet. On the ratchet was a 9/16 socket with two slots cut in it. Pretty interesting modification wish I could talk to the guy and see what it was for. He is still alive just in assisted living and his kids are selling everything off. Socket has a 1946 date code and the ratchet I believe it’s a 1945 but it’s really hard to tell on both so I could be totally wrong. I paid $3 for it. I have been looking for this style of ratchet for a long time. It was the first thing to pop out at me when I walked in the garage.

That is the 3rd one I have seen. May have been a salesman case or something. I have this one with some 29 tools.

I am starting to wonder if there were any e code breakers!

Is it safe to say then that a "G" code breaker is correct for the "E" code sets? If so, I can pull my "G" out of my trade pile and put it in the tin with the set.

The breakers in all of my midget sets have the G codes, even my 9/32” drive set. I have checked literally hundreds of 1/4” breakers on eBay without ever seeing one with the E code.

The "O" series is odd, I do not think they are in the cats. Probably 50s to 60s. There was a collector at one time trying to get the whole set. They are hard to find.

For what it's worth

My uncle has told me that he and my Father bought a set of these in the summer of 1947. With the exception of several special service tools, these were the first Snap~on Logo wrenches and were likely prototypes, no dates and no catalog record. Could that be correct?
