"1 HP at 5.0 amps"

You don't need too much math to know that can't be 1 hp. Probably better than HF grinders though.

Are you making fun of my cool grinder?!? :(
Please explain the math here. I know nothing about electrical measurements.

1 HP is equal to 745 watts. 745 watts divided by 120 volts is 6.2 amps. Or you could multiple the 5 amp X 120 volt which would equal 600 watts which would equal roughly a 3/4HP motor.

And yes, we're making fun of your cool grinder. :tard:

BTW, where's it at so I can actually laugh at it. :)

I would factor in efficiency and power factor and equate that grinder to no more than 1/2 hp.

We have these really nice Milwaukee 1 HP 10" bench grinders. We have used them for 10 hours a day for 30 years!! If anyone knows where we can find another one please let us know. The model numbers are 5091 and 5080.

I have had a couple of cheap bench grinders over the years, and they've all worked just fine, but have had some luck finding good ones late. The first one is a 1hp 8" Baldor on a factory cast iron stand, but I just realized I don't have a picture of it yet....I'll fix that later today.

A while back I managed to get a Wilton 350S on a cast Baldor stand, along with a Reed 105 that had a cracked slide for $125. I welded the slide on the Reed, put it on my welding table, restored the Wilton, sold it for $200 to a member here, and have had the stand sitting around idly until today.

Yesterday I saw an ad on CL for a "like new" 1/2hp 7" Baldor grinder so I sent the guy a note with my phone number. It turns out he had three left after buying ten at an equipment auction. They were using them without guards of eye shields (buffing) so he ordered new shields and guards, etc and has been selling them pretty quickly. I bought two. I mounted one on this Baldor stand, and I'm mounting the other one on a vintage/antique stand I found locally that has a brass tag from a now defunct Detroit machinery company (Peninsular Machine Co).

I have to say that I'm a huge fan of Baldor motors and grinders now. They run smooth as silk and last forever.

When I went to pick up the two yesterday the guy had a nice Wilton 400S on his bench and I told him I bought and sold vises and anvil because I saw a miniature anvil under his bench. He grabbed it, laughed and said it hadn't moved in a couple of years, and I could have it as a bonus since I drove an hour to get there....I was shocked! It's just a little 8lb Littco jeweler's anvil, but it appears unused.

Here's the Baldor/Baldor combo:

Something is wrong with the nameplate voltage and/or amperage. Based on the amps, that grinder was originally a 240v machine. Someone scratched in "110" volts, so hopefully the grinder was able to be reconfigured properly for that voltage. Amps would, of course, double the present value.

Yeah, Baldor marks them as 230V and gives instructions on how to wire it for 115V as well. The literature lists it as either 230V or 115V and the provide a schematic for setting it up either way. It's definitely set up for 115V and my guess is they wrote on it so it was obvious how it was set up.

It would have been better to mark it more clearly, and not write over the original 230V, no doubt.

The other two grinders I mentioned...a 1hp Baldor 8" model with the factory stand and the second 1/2hp Baldor I bought yesterday on the stand I plan to mount it on soon (have the shields, but haven't mounted them yet). I'm probably only going to keep the one on the black vintage stand with the brass tag, and sell the other two.

You did good Bart. I get to use a big old Baldor from the 60s at work. It has that big old red stand. I need to find one for the casa.

I am duly impressed by this lineup ! Doc, that is a bruiser. I wouldn't want to meet that dude in a dark alley anytime soon.

I just ordered new European 203 SFF bearings for my newly identified little 1/3 horse Dayton (I believe). I'm probably going to shoot it with Rustoleum Regal Red. I have a very nice old new power cord and am getting a new toggle switch.

It should be a fun refurbishment and I'll post some during and after photos in the next week. The inside is clean.

"Let's see your Bench Grinders!"

I have an opportunity to purchase a Blue-Point 1/3 Horsepower Model BG330 grinder. It has a stand but it looks like it may hand made and the pic sent was pretty poor. Waiting for pics of the label and the stand tomorrow.

He texted end said that "the wheel and the wiring are new and fixed by his friend". Not sure what that really means but I guess I will see. I am trying to look at it and test it out. It looks like it may be fairly complete.

Question, is there any way it could be worth the $75 asking price? Seems kind of high unless it had a nicer stand.......

Not a lot of information on this model so I appreciate any insight.

That grinder was made by Wissota and is the smallest model they made that I know of. It's missing the eyeshields and end guards, and the wheel is clogged with aluminum (making it both difficult to clean and dangerous to use). Overall it generally looks pretty well used. I would value it no more than $40 with the missing parts and clogged wheel.

Thanks for the insight. I am not sure if they guy will come down that far but I am not in desperate need for one either so I will see what happens.

Wait for a better grinder. There's nothing extraordinary about that Bluepoint to justify the high price

1981 Dayton 3/4HP / 10.8A that I got off eBay NOS, literally new in the box unused...

Craftsman round-top 1/2HP, middle band was pretty rusty so I brushed it some and painted just to protect it from more deterioration for now. Had a lot of caked on metal filings & grinding gunk I had to scrape with a cold chisel.

Both get a lot of good use.

Any recommendations on where to get a decent pedestal for a grinder? The HF one I got tends to "walk" as I use it. I don't want to bolt it down to the concrete if possible

Build one out of scrap metal. You can usually get free (or very cheap) bent steel tire rims from tire stores... Fill them with concrete.

Or, balance your wheels on your grinder... lol

Greetings. Picked this Cummins 8" 3/4 HP bench grinder and stand earlier this week.
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=5930.

I am excited about this grinder as I've been slogging along with a 1/4HP for years at work. I am looking for the left side cover and eye shield and any information (link to a manual, etc.)
I just received the following message, when I clicked on your link.
"Invalid Album specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator."

I don't know what's wrong. I did not notify the administrator.

Sorry you 1st post didn't go smoothly. I hope you get it sorted. Welcome.

I don't always quite get the math either. This is a half horse power motor.
