My son was using one of my block grinders and commented how smooth it ran. He is closing on his first house later this week and asked if he could have one, if I could spare one out of my 30 grinders (exaggerated ). I guess he forgot that I told him a while back that one was his.

Have no idea where the sarcasm comes from.:dunno:

Well I have been a lurker for about a year, just absorbing the wealth of information. So when I went to purchase a new Chiwan bench grinder I figured I better search the good ol GJ forum first. Low and behold I found this thread and living if rural Alaska my Craigslist is about a $1,000 plane ride away so Flea Bay it is. Got outbid at the last second for a 1/2 hp block and am still looking. So from rural Alaska I would like to give all of you a big....

YOU ****!!

Sorry for the long first post just had to getr that off my chest. Whew. Now on with the search.

AKA: so attitude on your first post and in our block thread? been lurking and holding on until you got sniped on an Auction? so sorry to hear you missed out on the Ebay 1/2 HP block. just curious how much it would have cost to ship to you?

i'm about as close as any member in the US except for your Alaska relatives so wondering if you might want to buy one of my blocks to make you a happier new member?

PM (private message sort of like email for GJ members) me with your email and we'll discuss options.

otherwise welcome to our group and we all hope you are not blockless for very much longer.

cheers

CB: once a kid and a block leave the home it's all downhill from there. best of luck trying to pick which one to give him.

I am not sure of the weight of the grinders, but thanks to the good ol USPS if it fits it ships. Fed Ex and UPS are really expensive here so we like/love USPS.
Thanks for the welcoming and all the vise info, just started restoring my father in laws vise.

I chased down another 1/3-HP round top Block.

I have left a number of messages from Michigan without a call back. So, when I arrived in Central New York, I thought I'd give it one more try, but this time with a 'local' phone.

That was the charm. The snow gods were with us, and the 55 min tip east from Syracuse went without a hitch. No small thing, because the west bound I-90 traffic was diverted off the thruway due to multiple accidents and snow-outs.

The young man selling the grinder was closing down the 3-generation general contracting business. My brother and I were able to get several items very reasonably.

The grinder is not complete and has a damaged LH wheel guard, but I know I can find a home for the bits 'n pieces. The eye shields are already spoken for.

This Block was born right after the Hendrix concert I went to in Miami FL, on May 18, 1968.

Welcome to the Forum and the Block grinder thread.

Depending on the grinder (HP, how complete, stones, ...) I have seen them weigh in (~28 to ~ 35 pounds) when all boxed and packed in either a 14x14x14 or a 16x16x16 FedEx box.

I help GJ members find Block grinders. For more information, see -->http://tinyurl.com/01-03-2015-GJ-post-3761

Torque,

I was 2 years old living in the Miami area when you went to that concert. Been to Gulfstream a number of times for events.

What did the word grinder mean to you 46 years ago? Im sure it wasn't that you'd be the king of the blocks now?:bounce:
As always, enjoy your posts.

How can I tell if my 3/4 HP is a brake model?

The original switch would have been a three way switch. ON-OFF-BRAKE. Instead of the usual ON-OFF switch.

There would also be something inside the housing that causes the braking action, but I'm not familiar enough with the details to say what it would be.

I ohm'd out my 3-position switch and found this terminal configuration.

Switch position::::::1st set of terminals::::::2nd set of terminals
Left:::::::::::::::::::::::::::Off:::::::::::::::::::::::Off
middle::::::::::::::::::::::::On:::::::::::::::::::::::Off
right::::::::::::::::::::::::::On:::::::::::::::::::::::On

For my grinder to be on, I need it in the "right" position. How do I wire this to cause it to brake?

So you are saying that your original switch is a 3-way? Does it have the brake circuit board like in this picture?

Do you guys mind me asking if the brake was just a safety feature? Or would it save the windings on the motor?
Also, is the arbor/ shaft the same as a newer grinder? I am curious because I would like to add a wire wheel to mine.
thank you,
Darik

Picked up this 1/3 hp at an auction for $50.00. Has some overspray on one side but saw little use. Stand is home made but well built.

So where do you find the 7" wheels (grinding and wire) with 1/2" arbor holes? Or do new wheels come with adapter bushings?

New to bench grinders, but mine is almost restored and ready to go back to work.

Also missing a set of wheel flanges if anyone has a good source for those...

Left hand wheel cover is coming from Sear parts tomorrow! Going to buy a replacement switch from ZORO this week NKK WR11.

Not sure what to do about the label. Still have the original, but it doesn't look good enough to put back. Thinking of putting it on the back and getting a craftsman logo for the front.
Try MSC, I have bought from them successfully more than once.

took it all for $40. Seller even added some NOS USA craftsman wheels (grinding, wire, buffing, and buffing compound)

I haven't seen a schematic, but look back in this thread for more information.

Also, here's a tear-down of a 1/3-HP m-397.19410.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=244561

Why has a VigLink been added to the "1/3-HP" above? It took me to: Omega j4000 Stainless-Steel 1/3-HP Continuous Pulp-Ejection Juicer

Torque,
Thanks for the links, those answered a lot of questions.

Picked up today my second 1/3HP, 6" CM Block. Saw the CL two days ago, however couldn't make the almost 2 hr, 90 ml round trip until tonight. With the luck I'v been having in my area with high asking prices and missing a good deal, this one was the closest and cheapest. Had to take the three boys, wife @ dance lessons, in the minivan, better fuel economy versus the truck.
CM Grinder #2 01-Purchase.jpgCM Grinder #2 02-Purchase.jpgCM Grinder #2 03-Purchase.jpg

Working condition, all parts there except quench tray, original Safety Glass with stickers and original Sears grinding wheels (both shot). This is the model with the Brake, works great however very scary stopping that much momentum at once. The motor groans to a stop. Date of manufacture looks like MAR 3 1958 or 1968.
CM Grinder #2 04-Purchase.jpgCM Grinder #2 05-Purchase.jpg

Can't find a close match for the manual on Vintage Machinery. Maybe some one here can help narrow down the year (1958 or 1968) and manual. As you see it $35, didn't even haggled on the price. Besides had my three boys with me and was rushed to get back home. Was in and out of the sellers house in under two minutes. Btw, didn't mentioned that on the way home 1/8 mile from the house my middle six year old decided to puke inside the minivan. That cost me an hour of clean up. Well at least it wasn't my truck. :lol_hitti

The project I've been working on for the last few months will be completed next week, and the job I thought I had next fell through. Not much on the horizon for a while. So I'm selling off some expendable shop stuff (mobile tool bases, panel saw, parts and pieces, grinder). I posted pics back at #3777 of the brand new, in the box grinder I picked up. I'm giving you guys notice that it is for sale. Going to list in CL and maybe ebay. Have to get all I can out of it. If you're interested, PM me an offer I can't refuse.

Holy smokes! A NIB 1960's crown top commercial. That ought to do very well. Good luck!

Nice!
I have another m-397.19590.

Shoot me a PM for what you want for yours, I can have my son in Seattle hold it for me until I see him next spring.

No sense in risking shipping it across the country.
