So what's the verdict on power .. I have a 6.2 amps ..7 inch wheel 1/2 horsepower(1975) ..in terms of power ...real world is that the one your looking for. I'm assuming these aren't cast iron parts by this era, but not sheet metal either right ?

I see the 3/4 has 6 amps, 1hp has 6.8... but 8 inch wheel...

Any depth charts in terms of real world power

Picked this one up today; my first 1 hp grinder. I already have a grinder for the house and one for the shop and maybe a spare or two somewhere on a shelf, but this popped up for $100 so I figured it was a good buy.

I'm not familiar with the color scheme; is that original or does it look like someone painted it?

Thanks

Nice find! first one I've seen that size without the added base/tool rest thing.
I vote for repainted.
Sears stopped offering the heavy duty base and went to just the slip-on quench tray sometime in the mid-to-late '80s. Last catalog I saw the base included is '82/'83 and the first I found with a quench-only was '88.
My swag is that one originally came with the heavy duty base, but it was removed. The wheel guards are not drilled for tool rest brackets.

Is there a date printed anywhere?

Argh!

It's much more difficult to research grinders (and other things) since someone uck-fup'd the Craftsman grinder page on that Antique Equipment website.

Anyone have any experience with the 9012 sharpening attachment? I have about a dozen chisels that need sharpened; I'm assuming it's useful for this.

Now that I have a spare 1 hp grinder, I'm looking for a way to put it into service. And also looking for an excuse to buy another tool, of course.

Motor efficiency tends to go up with horsepower. It's definitely possible a 1/2HP and 3/4HP motor both draw around 6A depending on motor efficiency.

1 HP motor rated for 6.8A is a lie however. That'd be 91% efficiency, which just doesn't happen in this size range of induction motor. You don't start hitting those efficiencies until you get into the 15-20HP range.

Been watching locally for a bench grinder for about 1.5 years now. This is the first one that’s come up that has intrigued me. Guy is asking $100. What do ya’ll think? I haven’t been able to determine the age, but he thinks he bought it in the 70’s. IMG_1887.jpegIMG_1888.png

I've been looking for a replacement for my 1/4 hp cheap Chinese (Sam's club I think) underpowered grinder. It seems especially lame lately when grinding lathe bits and one finally showed up at a good price on FBM, the first photo is from the ad. Thanks to this forum I knew what this was and that it was worth buying and hopefully outlasts me.

There's no date stamp on the bottom so no idea on the age. It is in excellent condition and my plan is to regrease the bearings and give it a minor soap and water cleanup on the minor accumulated "gunk". The only thing "wrong" with it is the lightbulb is burned out.

I checked inside the bottom cover but no joy, there's no date stamp there either...no biggie.

Also, either the lightbulb wasn't screwed in all the way or the socket was dirty, I took it out , cleaned the bulb and BINGO!, it works!

It's the little things that satisfy...

This belonged to my grandfather. I remember using it in his basement when I was a kid. I have had it for ten or fifteen years. I did not realize they had such a following! I am inspired to clean it up and paint it.

The wire wheel is too close to the right side. It also needs eye shields. Are they available anywhere?

That paint actually looks pretty good - hit it with some Auto paint product and see where you are.

My latest project was a lucky find 3/4 hp on a factory stand. A complete tear down with new bearings, power cord, paint, label,(Thanks Matt), power cord, replacement safety glass shields, tool rests, new wheels, and rubber feet. Attached are a few photos. One before, a few showing the new label with the tools I made to install, and the finished grinder.

Does anyone know if Craftsman sold a or sent along with the Heavy-duty grinder a tool for adjusting the tool rests? I seem to remember seeing an ad or photograph somewhere of a stubby t-handle 1/2" for this purpose. I have searched all the old craftsman catalogs I could find on line but no luck. If they did I'm sure it would be a rare bird and hard to find. Many would have been lost over the years. If I could just see a photo it would not be hard to make one. Just hoping.
