YOU ****^^ Pics?

:+1: O wow, pics please. Is that one of the commercial one? What does a NOS grinder run these days?

Saved the picture for reference.
:

It might just be the pic angle but it looks like the arbors on that unit are a good bit longer than the more common, older block grinders? O and I agree with Balane, $100, possibly a LITTLE more, but $200 seems way high to me.

Just picked this Nos Sears Blockhead. Owner bought it new, never opened the box and put it into storage.

All I've seen so far is just the label on the box, not even a hint of what's inside or what you paid for it, and I already know that YOU **** !

I bet he just found a box, there's no grinder. Right guys? I mean, who would just put a picture of a box of a brand new grinder, a grinder that he knows we would just be drooling over, a grinder like he stepped back in time and bought. Probably a box that was full of vintage Snap on wrenches or something he found at an estate sale.

I've seen these kind of things before, I just know he's going to ............... Really ......................****!!!
Unless of course it's just a box, then you **** for making us think you ****.
:bounce::beer:
What we all dream of finding!
Now please post the pictures.
You know the rules, no pics, it didn't happen, like *** in a dream.

+1 YOU ****.

The guy called me 6 times yesterday trying to see if I was still interested. After negotiating with him a little bit, our final price came out to $80. Now to decide if this grinder is really worth it.

Hah! He got one over on you! The warranty expired in the first year! And you can't return it to the store, because the store closed! :lol_hitti

I don't know if this one really qualifies, but it does have the general shape, and the model prefix.

Got it at a yard sale last year for $5. Model 257.190440. Motor draws 1.2 amps, so probably only something like 1/8hp. Body is plastic, and the wheels are only 1/2" wide. Assembled in USA. Seems like a toy in comparison.

Does it still smell new? Nice.. You get to take one out of he box and put together, priceless!

Warranty is for the new **** of today, there's a good hundred years on that one.

What do you think that matches to what you could buy today, in comparable quality? A $ 400.00 grinder?

They went for around a hundred in the mid 70's, which would be around $400 adjusted for inflation. Can you buy anything decent for $400 new today, though?

Boy, what a find!

How much was that Tsquare? You do realize you can add more than one attachment per post right? You may want to check the bearings before putting it into use.

Ok let me give some color about this nos Blockhead - the when, where, who and how much--

Like a lot of other GJ members, I have been looking for a nice Blockhead. This came up on Craig's list not to long ago, I was on vacation in Lake Tahoe with my family, just got home after a full day out and about, it was late in the afternoon and went on Craig's List in the San Diego area to see if anything new was listed for the day - that's when I came across the ad for this Blockhead. I couldn't believe my good fortune, but being that it was late in the day - I thought calling would be a waste of time. After calling I came to find out he had just posted the ad 10 mins earlier. I bought it right their on the phone, I told him I would not be able to pick it up for another two weeks and he promised not to sell it out from under me.

It turns out, the person I bought it from sells used machinery. When I went to his shop to pick it up, he told me the story of how he came across it. He was contacted about a storage unit that had tools and machinery stored in it from an estate sale. He went out and bought the lot. It had two of these nos grinders, this one being the last one. It also had two new in the box Craftsman tool chests from the early 70's (the grey and red style) top and bottom's, a drill press (used) and a host of other new and used Craftsman tools. I asked if he still had the tool chests, but he explained that those were sold along with everything else over a year ago, it just so happened he had forgot about this Blockhead and only recently came across this box in the corner of his shop.

I paid $200.00, that was the asking price - I never considered bargaining - I was just happy to have the opportunity to get one of these Blockheads new in the box. Compared to what is available today, $200.00 is a good deal - and yes it still has that new tool smell

Sorry for all the separate picture posts, I couldn't post more than one pic at a time because of size.

That's a good question, just took it out of the box yesterday, been busy with family matters. I do not believe it would be any newer than 1974 and shouldn't be older than 1970 - I will take a look tonight and post findings. Hell, I still need to put her together.

Incredible find! Older style grinder but after the change to a non-metal switch. I would have to guess 1969-1970. The date should be stamped on the bottom, that's where they usually are. (Example shown below.)

Dang, that was almost like watching a good stripper like GRL. It was beginning to look like you would tease right to the end, and really never quite show the goods...

Now we need to see a start up video. You are going use it, right?

My old half beat ones run smooth enough that I don't need to clamp to the bench, can't wait to see what a brand new one does.

Don't forget to ring test the stones.

Checked last night - no date stamp either side of plate.

T Square: maybe it's a toy. since we don't have any pictures of it set up yet and no comments from you after you plugged it in. or maybe the date stamp rubbed off in the box from being moved around for 40 years in it.

Nice find and we still want pictures of it if you have time to post a few more.

That isn't what we'd call a "classic" block grinder. I'd be inclined to refer to it as a "box grinder". It has the 315 prefix, which was produced by Ryan (some lists say Ryobi). The classic block grinders have a 257 or 397 prefix and were produced by Paramount/Allegretti or Delco.

I may be wrong, but I think that $60 is high for that grinder. I'd put it more in the $15 -$25 range or less. It's not really one of my favorites, but some may like them. From what I understand, they're fine for light occasional work, but the 5" wheels may be difficult to find. YMMV.

Found a 397 series 1/2 hp 6" grinder on Clist and had to check it out. Lady inherited it from her father and was cleaning the garage and needed to sell.

Only problem with this grinder is that it was dusty and barely used, seriously maybe 1-2 grinds on each wheel. Barely any grinder dust. Every part was there and only a scratch or two in places.

Oh and it was $20!

Nice grinder, good deal. ***** on the one eye shield. Make sure you give those wheels a good dressing. I see some plugged pores on both of them.

Found this 397 series 1/3 HP off a CL add. Dated 1966. It belonged to the lady's I bought from father. Runs smooth. This starts round two for me, I have a 1/3 HP, but I think it's newer.
The lady is moving and trying to sell off stuff in a full shed. She was telling me about the grinder " it's a old CM, don't know if you'll want, it was my dads from years ago" She will be calling me once she uncovers some more tools.

This one was $ 20.00. Also bought a brand new cord reel, never used, $ 10.00

Brooks, great deal on yours, you do ****!

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=326127&d=1394934309This was my grandfather's Craftsman Industrial grinder. My guess is that is from the mid 1960s. I replaced the grind stone and the capacitor about 20 years ago. The wire wheel is due for a replacement. I'd like to get replacement lampshade, mine broke, any ideas where I could find one?

Looks like CB has a few extra grinders if you happen to see his new thread, but if they all work he might not have the parts. i heard that you can still buy new parts for some of these and one of the other guys might have that information to give you.

I just wanted to tell you that Gramps didn't cheap out when he bought that grinder because it looks like one of the really nice 1/2 HP ones. Nice:thumbup:
