Maybe this will help.

Great info, as usual. My newest 3/4hp (that filthy commercial roundtop block shown a few posts ago) is a new one for your list: 397.19671

Same as the 397.19470 for specs (6.0/3.0 amps). Don't really know what else is different.

So far, we have seen two variations in the 397.19670's. An Commercial Industrial Rated:

And a Commercial Totally Enclosed:

Can you tell what the 397.19671 says?

There are only shreds of the original label (its not a metal style plaque like the 397.19670), but I can make out "craftsman commercial", "3/4 HP grinder", "totally enclosed", "ball bearing", "capacitor start motor", "style 3084", as well as the 5/8 shaft, currents, and a few others. It's just too dirty to take a pic.
Physically, it looks like your 397.19670 except it came with the deluxe cast iron base and had no bottom plate.

No art work, sorry.

I do have a really good label.

The color is not correct in the 2nd shot. I can re-shoot a picture today. It's suppose to be sunny.

Also, there's this one.

I think that will work. I have a graphic artist friend that might be able to do that for me. Thanks!

Sorry boys, this one came home with me yesterday morning. Got it for $30!!!
Good to hear it!

Keep us up-to-date on your efforts to clean it up/restore it, ....

Dutchess County - was that much of a trip from you? Upstate NY covers a lot, but being from Central (upstate) NY, I think of Syracuse, Finger Lakes region as upstate.

BTW - Any questions, just ask.

It was actually less than 10 min away from me. I live in Dutchess county as well. You're right, Dutchess county is not exactly upstate NY. I'm just used to people I know further down south referring to it that way.

It is 'up the river' though! :lol_hitti

Exeter: cool looking label and i like the Heritage badge a lot. if i ever find a 3/4 HP block that has a bad label i will PM you to see if you can make one for me.

Ex: i'm looking for one of those big bases with the water tray and cool tool rests so don't blame you for snagging them off the old 3/4 block. of course with your talent you can spiff that 3/4 HP up and maybe put a couple wire wheels on it and sell it to one of us since you probably own more grinders than all of us except Doc.

Doc: so only 3 states away for local pick up? nice find and hope the roads didn't have too much snow on them yet. nice find again

have to run before my laptop crashes again and want to congratulate all of you that found and saved a few more blocks whether you own just one or ten now.

cheers and have a great Sunday

Well, you would think it would be as easy as that, but nooooo....

I took the Doc's advise and spent some time on that 3/4hp block in between trick-or-treaters. Had soaked the parts overnight in some degreaser and then in the dishwasher, finally painted and wire brushed to the point of it looking pretty good. Started to assemble it this morning only to find that you cannot install standard tool rests on a grinder that had a factory deluxe base---there are no mounting holes!
So now the decision is whether to drill and tap the guards for standard rests, or put it ALL back as original with that cast iron base. OR just put wire wheels on it like you say, but that seems a shame since it's so close to being complete---This has turned into more work than planned....

I think I got it. The half horse commercials did the same thing. 397.19590 with the metal tag and metal framed eye shields. And the 397.19591 had the adhesive label and the plastic eye shields. My 397.19670 has the heavy cast iron base with no bottom plate as well. My two favorite styles of blocks, btw.

And don't forget the 20% increase in amperage between the xx590 and xx591. Same way with the 3/4hp blocks. I'll take plastic eyeshields and more powerful motor every time!

Ex: now that you have it cleaned up throw some new wire wheels on it or a scotch brite or specialty wheel on it and sell it to one of the local GJ guys. without shipping expense i'd probably buy it and you know i don't NEED another grinder, but having one checked out by you Doc, McB or a few of the other guys would be great.

McB: any new additions to the Blockmeister speaking of doing a little extra work on a 3/4 HP?

ALL: i know most of you don't frequent Free Parking and i didn't until a few months ago either because it can be tough in there. i've met a bunch of great members and actually started a Diet or really a better health thread if some of you want to check it out. we discuss several topics and one member is quitting smoking after 40 years and is close to 60 days so far. other members are changing their diets or eating smaller portions. hell i started the thread and for the first two months i didn't lose a pound because just learning to eat 3 meals a day again and some good food. i've lost 10 pounds so far and a 1/3 the way to my goal and whether you want to lose weight, exercise, quit smoking or just want to post comments you are all welcome. Nines is maybe the only blockhead to drop in and he is skinny, but he's trying to get on NPT (normal people's time) instead of the vampire hours he usually is up and around.

cheers

I have the multilayered Photoshop file where you can edit each of the text fields. You can also change colors, turn on or off a white background depending on what you are going to print on etc. You can even swap out the logo for the crown or the more modern logo. I could post it, but I don't know how many of the readers here have Photoshop to edit the file...

Drives, I still use the blockmeister regularly. It's a "go to" tool for the belt grinder and wire wheel. I am working on a new stand. The one I made is plenty solid, but takes up a little too much room in my small garage. Hopefully I'll get that going before the cold weather hits.

Do your tool rests have big windows ground into them? Mine do. Would like to fix them and replace the sticker (somebody?/anybody?) before I sell it.

Yep, windows in the tool rests. One has a crack in it as well, so my plan is to mill them flat and epoxy fresh plates onto them. Thoughts??

PS, where are you in northern IL?

Yeah, I'm gonna take a little off the tops on my "belt grinder mill". Then drill, tap, and counter sink screws through some "1/4 plate near the rear of the rests. Then finish the edges on my "belt grinder shaper". Probably put some right stuff between them on final assembly. I'm in Rockford.

Less than a week into the restoration and here's where I'm at. New paint, bearings, cord, hardware. Just need stones, tool rests, eye shields and the new label to finish her up.

Thanks TM. This was actually my 5th block. It all started with two 1/2 hp blocks. Then I was fortunate enough to find 2 different 1 hp blocks. Both in brand new, unused condition. Now this commercial 3/4 hp. All 5 of them look exactly the same as they are all the flat top models. Now that I have 3 of the bigger boys I might thin the herd a little and get rid of the 1/2 hp models.

I have more questions than answers.
Finally my first block. I watched this one on CL for about a month. They finally dropped the price and brought it to my town. It still has what I think are the original wheels. It came with a rim type stand. Plus another grinder(?) and a Cole vise for about the original asking price of the grinder alone. It was an estate sale and they wanted to sale everything as a package. They had lots of tire kicker but no buyers.. Lucky for me I had some cash at the right time.

It's missing the rubber feet and has the as to be expected forever to stop feature, with no extra charge for the one piece eye guards that are hazy. Hope the guards polish out.

As I've watched this thread I've seen where others have posted the best place to buy bearing and other parts. As you might guess I had no reason to write down the information at the time. Sooo would someone be so kind and save me hours of searching and point me to where I can find this information. Thanks in advance.
