Does anyone have a grinder around 1/3 or 1/2hp grinder for sale. I can do a rehab on it, I just can't locate one. And I'm looking for a project

Saw a 1/3hp today at an estate sale, bad guards otherwise nice shape, as well as a pristine 103.243xx three wheel bandsaw, wired up with motor and diy wood stand.

The asked prices weren't out of line by any means. If you're local to SoCal (or anyone else) pm me and I can direct you.

It's not like I need this one. But......the plan is the separate it from the stand. Put my 1/2HP 397.19590 on the stand and put the new one in my basement.

I'd be all on the bench and vise for $100, after trying to negotiate it for half that... :lol_hitti

DOC: i have that Craftsman vise in my "little" cabinet or it might be on my shelf or i might actually have 2 of them. if you really need me to measure it because i can't remember if it's a 3 or 4 inch vise i'll do so in a bit, but most likely a 4 inch wide jaw. bonus with the copper jaws and bench and i've paid that much for that Craftsman vise because those old Rock Island made 1930's vises don't show up often anymore. i'm guessing it weighs about 60 pounds so maybe K will say when he takes if off the bench which is also a good one.

i don't blame you for not running to buy both or either of them because you (we) all probably don't NEED them. I would just BECAUSE though if the funds were in my pocket.

K: you can pay full price and it's still a good deal, but if it's been out there for a while maybe making an offer on both might save you some gas money. good luck.

Sadly I don't have the money or space for that workbench and vise. And I don't have a vehicle large enough to get it, so it's gonna stay there. Hopefully someone else here can snag it. I'll grab measurements on the jaws when I get the grinder.

K: if you don't have a space or need the bench i understand and maybe he'll just sell you the vise which is a keeper since you are buying his grinder. those benches sell for $100-150 around here and are pretty well made.

good luck and hope the grinder is in good shape.

Hi guys,

Would anyone know a good place to get replacement eyeshields for this block grinder? Is there a link to searspartsdirect I should be looking at?

This grinder itself works well, though I'm always planning on a restore-- however I'm nervous about replacing the bearings since I don't have any tools for doing it. I know about torqueman's legendary work in documenting his rebuilds, but are there some links I could see on best practices on bearing replacement?

S4: i wonder if that is another member's block. nicely restored too. if it's a 1/2 commercial on the stand restored i'd have to say in the $200 range wouldn't be out of the question at all and more is ok if you need one. great grinder and one of my favorite models. metal sheilds would be about the only thing i'd like to see, but those look pretty clear and functional.

Drives - thanks. Asking price is 250...I was thinking 175-200 was fair so very close to your thoughts. I've got a set of metal shield I could swap on too...

Waiting for a reply from the guy now. He also has a beautiful band saw and table saw as well...

S4, I saw the ad. Beautiful machines, seem nicely restored, but I'm not sure anyone will pony up that much for the two saws. I agree with you and Drives on the grinder value. That whole set for around 800 would sure make a nice shop for some one......

Gonna give it a proper once over tomorrow and swap my 1/2HP over to the stand. The workbench and vise were gone before I got there.

***S4cruiser has claimed the grinder***
Now, I really don't need this grinder. This makes number four, I was really just after the stand for my 1/2HP one. Soooooo............provided nothing is horrifically wrong with it, $10 plus shipping an it's yours. I'd really REALLY like to pull the lamp for my other 1/3HP grinder, but I don't want to cannibalize this one and then pawn it off on someone.

Drives - thanks. I searched some, but couldn't find specs for it.

You're right, I (we) don't need more vises/grinders, especially 'smalls'. ;)

Larry - I haven't found OEM eye shields; but the following link covers a replacement non-OEM option.

Thanks for the support. Here are some links that should help. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and/or post here.

What's a fair price for this gem?
Sweet!

That's a fair price, if the bearings, power cord are new, and the other electrics have been attended to.

Waiting for a reply from the guy now.
That's always the hard part for me.

:) I can relax, now that the temptations have been removed! Glad you snagged that Block & stand.

All apart and in process of being cleaned! This is my first time refreshing a block.

Keavark- I'm pumped, thanks for the super deal!

Is the glass in the metal eye shields usually double stacks of glass?

Yep, the eyeshields are like that on my 1/2HP. Laminated safety glass. And do yourself a favor, get a couple sets of Raptor 3X bushings for whatever grinding wheels you use. Those things eliminate the run out from those crappy plastic collapsible bushings.

I got this about a month ago and found it does not run. I got it cheap so not too bummed.
When I plugged it in it would barely spin just kinda hum, then blew a fuse.
I dont see any abuse as it is in great condition and clean inside and was hoping it might be an easy fix and wont need to dig further.

My very first Craftsman block grinder. I found GJ while searching for garage flooring options but quickly found myself more interested in the design, longevity, and wonderful restorations of vintage Craftsman power tools. I never knew what a block grinder was and then I quickly figured out my life would not be complete without 1 or 2 or __ of them in my garage.

I have been searching for Cman power tools for at least 6 months without any luck. I saw a CL ad last week. “Must sell tools”, one of them being “grinder on a homemade stand $20. Must get rid of asap. All items work.” This photo of the back of the grinder was the only one posted but I said to myself; self, that looks like the back of a block grinder.
View media item 55575So I texted the seller and told him I would buy the grinder if it was a Craftsman. I figured I would take my chances since this is the first one I had seen in months. He texted back “Craftsman 1/2 hp” so I told him I would give him some extra cash if he would hold it for me as it was a 2 hour drive away.

It turned out to be a 1/3 HP model 397.19581 with all the parts including the quench tray. Date stamp is Dec 12, 1974. It hums nicely and takes about 35 seconds to spin down (normal?). Now I am going to have to re-read this thread and pay attention, maybe even take notes before I start on the restoration. It should be a fun project. Thanks for the great information all of you have posted here.
View media item 55577View media item 55581It looks well used and will likely look at replacing the bearings and definitely the stones. The one eye guard is shot, may replace with the ones Grainger sells but I prefer the metal framed ones. While the stand is pretty heavy duty and easy to move, the crooked pipe weld is already driving me nuts (would love to find one of the CM pedestal stands). It also seems too high with the tool rests at 47”. I will also need to get one of those nice labels done that I have seen here from a couple members.

Great grab Cman.
Search this thread, or the Block Grinder 101 thread for the Hillman replacement rubber feet for it (available at Lowes). You'd be surprised at how much vibration the feet can remove, even when the grinder is bolted down.

OBTW - It's also a CrownTop. At 1974 it could be one of the last with that logo.

$20 ? - Yup, that's suckage pricing.

Hello all,

Just finished this rebuild and posted the details over at owwm.org under omwm, but thought you'd like to have a peek and also to contribute to this excellent thread.

It's 397.21125, a Canadian model, identical to the .21135, but no tray or light.

As found:
As%20Advertised%20Craftsman%20Grinder.jpg

Front:
Craftsman-397.21125-Front.jpg

Left side:
Craftsman-397.21125-Left.jpg

Replaced the bearings, painted the centre band with Rustoleum Metallic Aluminium. Didn't paint housing or guards, but used NuFinish The Once a Year Car Polish, that worked wonders removing the oxidization. Everything else was buffed.

Front after:

Used many ideas from the postings here, so thank you all very much.
