I ended up using one coat of rustoleum clear to make it look good. 2 coats make it look like orange peel. I also tried krylon clear made for uv protection and photographs but it was no good.

I was thinking about using clear to provide some resistance to oil and abrasion but was worried the solvents in the paint would cause runs in the ink. Glad that's not the case. Looks great!

Well, I got one of my 3/4 hp commercials cleaned up. Not perfect, but that was by design- I want her new owner to put her to work, not collect dust. Rustoleum metallic night black and silver. DIY label in InDesign (with intentional errors so that no one gets duped into thinking its original, however unlikely that may be). Made in July 1974, just 6 days after my other 3/4 hp block was made. Started out rough, but in perfect functioning order:

Stripped down, wire wheeled, ground, decreased, etc. The slag build up was a pain to get loose- needed a punch and hammer to knock some of it free. Stole a pair of steel/glass eye shields off an older 1/3hp model I bought. Replaced the glass with Lexan and used a flat LED Philips bulb. I think it came out nice:

It is not nice, it is perfect. I think if those craftsman factory workers would be proud to see it still exist and that folks are willing to bring them back to life!

Currently working on a 1/2 hp and after stripping off the paint I realized how bad the rust had pitted. Any advice?

Prime and paint with many coats of hammered finish. Or you can do body filler.

I don't know much about primer but should I use self etching in this case? Should I use two coats of primer to help fill in the gaps or let the paint do that?

Etching is good for the bare metal areas. Look for a sandable high build primer. It will build up a bit to fill in all the pitting.

I haven't visited in a while, and got to thinking I should check my local CL. 1/2HP commercial with original stand comes up, so I picked it up. Came with the quench tray, which isn't pictured, the original owners manual, and a stack of original stones. Its missing one tool rest.

I wanted to space the wire wheels away from the motor to get more clearance. Found that drill bushings from McMaster fit perfect! Here's the one I used.

Thinning the herd, gave a friend a nice 1/4 HP block with a nice USA made Craftsman wire wheel on it as part of a trade on a 48" lawn tractor. He was tickled Block Gray!

Well had and interesting day went to Prescott to do some paper work on a piece of property and found this, was going to sell it but they more research I did on it and the more I ran it and watched how I could go put a frozen burrito in the microwave and come back out and it was still winding down I decided to keep it. It had a light on it but when I first turned it on I had to take cover thought ISIS was firing motor rounds at me. Removed the light will look to get it repaired. Its a 3/4 HP commercial with tool rest, water troff and stand.IMG] [/IMG]

I think I'm gonna start following you around and offering people $10 more for the stuff you find!

Those tool rests aren't even all chowdered up. Beauty.

Chilang: that's one Block most of us want to own. Well Done on the spiffing up too and it looks great. good luck on the garage/shop ORGANIZING and i'm right with you.

04: i think you are talking about PUPUHD (PUP as i call him) that might be snowed under with a ton of orders. guys are asking him to make new labels for a ton of different 100 year old machines too. here's a thread to his link and maybe he'll see your post and just post an update on his thread. there is always the chance emails are not going thru or going to junk mail. i've had both my email accounts stop working for a week at a time this year for NO F"N REASON so it might not be that he's avoiding you. good luck

ALL: so i picked up to 1/2 HP blocks from the same great guy last weekend. he definitely used the one more than a few times and he said the other one he might have only used a couple times and i had to agree. hard to believe they are the same identical grinder. in fact the new one's plastic cover had a crack in it so i swapped it with the old weathered one already.

I'm working on my first resto for my 1/2 hp. I have it mostly stripped down but need to remove the bearings. Are you guys using bearing pullers (which I don't currently have) or is there another trick to removing them??

A puller is nice but not needed. You can supprt the bearings with a few steel bars over a vise, and drive them with a soft hammer (or drift). New bearings are driven on with a pipe catching just the inner race.

What maxima ^^ said.

Also, here's a thread: CM Block Grinder bearing replacement - 3 methods that shows several ways.

Let us know how you make out. It's satisfying to hear/see how you are doing.

I had posted this on the Garage Sale thread a couple weeks ago when I got it but figured it belonged here as well. This was listed on CL and contacted the seller and was told I was 4th in line someone coming yadda,yadda,yadda....3 days later I get an email saying the grinder is mine if I wanted to come take a look.Made arrangements for that evening after work. Seller wanted to plug it in to show me how horribly long it would take to spin down. While waiting several minutes to spin down I paid him his $10 and loaded 'er up.

That's funny!

I was alerted to that CL ad by a fellow member. At the time I was 'up north', in Michigan that can be anywhere past Flint.

I called or eMailed the seller, he let me know I was 5th on the list. I figured it wouldn't still be there when I returned the following week, but to my surprise it was still listed when our trip was cut short.

I called or eMailed him to say I was back early, and was surprised it was still listed.

He replied he had run through the list and the 4th person (you) was suppose to pick it up, but if that fell through it was mine.

So, YOU ****!

That is a great Block for very little $$.

Found this on CL last night Craftsman Grinder with stand $25.00 emailed and didn't get a response so figured someone else beat me to the punch. This morning I get a call back and said I was first to email him and be at his house at 5pm. Real nice guy who owned it forever, promised me that when he finds the other eye guard and side plates he will call me, I believe him. Changed my screen name also (its Latin)

Was Chilang....... Crotalus Atrox is latin for Western Diamondback Rattle Snake. Figured it more appropriate for where I am from and the many I have shot. To be fair I only shoot them when I am hunting with a bird dog or they scare the living DOO DOO out of me
