Picked up this bad boy at a flea market for $35. It took 2 years but I finally have one!

You **** on that one! There is only 1 other that is a higher hp than that one. I say you did pretty good ! Maybe you would even want to swap for my clean 1/3 hp model [emoji2] that way you would not have to worry about a restoration!

I just picked up a 1/3 Hp block grinder today it looks well used but runs great. Does anyone know where I can get a few replacement parts i'm missing both wheel covers and one tool rest and a light shade.

Thanks. I was aiming for at least a 3/4 hp, I would have been really happy to find a 1hp but after firing up the 3/4 I'm pretty happy with the amount of power it has.

I only have a 1/3hp block grinder and a mail box grinder and they have decent power so I can imagine how much power it has! Replace the wheels, give it a cleaning and put that beauty to work!

Hi guys. I found another grinder in a pretty unique setting- still sealed in the original box, with the sale tag still hanging on it after 5 decades. I made a post about it, but thought I should post here as well.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=361513

I'm guessing it's a 1962-3 doghouse 1/3 horse. Was in a hoard with a mountain of other unopened items.

It'll probably go up on eBay but I'd love for an aficionado to get it, so PM me if you're interested in having it for your collection.

That's a "Pre-Block" grinder, and it didn't come with guards. The guards are on the 1/3 and & 1/2 hp models.

Very true! They also don't have holes in the base for mounting which was why I sold mine! Still a great machine but priced a little high in my opinion

Hmm, I've never seen one with no holes. Every Pre-Block I've seen has a pair of mounting holes near the rear of the base.

Price-wise, $80 might be a few $$ high for a 1/4hp model but in the ball park. I would think my 1/3hp Pre-Block would be worth $100

So I recently counted, and I had 15 grinders from various mfgrs. Decided I needed to get rid rid of most of them, and I've been selling them off little by little. I 've even passed on about 4 block grinders in as many months at various sales. Well, that was until yesterday. I stopped by a local estate sale a few blocks from my house and found this sitting in an extremely clean little workshop in the basement. Not bolted down, just sitting there staring at me. The kid in charge of the basement accepted my $20 offer without hesitation, and the rest is history. What can ya do? :dunno: Pic is as found. A little dusty, but otherwise complete with light, etc...

I thought I did well on a 1/3 hp mail box grinder for $15 but you killed it! Well done!

There's a tag on the box showing (barely readable) a price of $174. I estimate this grinder was about a 1980 since it has the four housing bolts and the dark gray/light gray coloring with black background label. Would you guys agree? I'm hesitant to pull it out and look for a date stamp.

JZ,

My 257.191401 1/2hp with the same coloring as yours didn't have a date code, but had this casting mark on the wheel guard that shows a 1984 date stamp. So, early 80's is the right time frame for your grinder. Run the inflation calculator numbers from 1979 to 1984 and there is a huge swing in "today dollars" - $623 to $418.

Found a Craftsman 1/4hp all cast grinder with stand petty cool little guy. The last 1/4 hp one I had was a brown color neither had side covers and they were not drill out for them. This one had an original stand with it.

Ziggy: nice find on the NOS 1HP Block.

ALL: maybe if Ziggy's 1HP gets sold to a member across the USA he might be one of the first successful shipments of the GJ MULE TRAIN. i started a thread today at the urging of some of the members and i'm getting a lot of responses from truck drivers, and members.

if you might want to touch some of the tools either by driving them down the road a bit or just storing them for members as other members stop by to pick them up and drop off post up on the Mule Train thread and here's the link:

All,
A couple of weekends ago, I won a 3/4hp block grinder at an auction. Although it was complete, the corner of the cast iron base was broken. Thankfully, the pieces were in the quench cup.
Seeing how popular and rare these grinders are, I decided to braze the pieces back on to the base. Here are some pictures:

1st. Picture: The broken base.
2nd. Picture: Using silver solder on both the outer and inner side, I was able to repair the damage. I'm leaving this as a functional repair. It would be easy to sand down the high spots, fill in the low spots and paint it.
3rd. Picture. The grinder and pedestal.

Cheers

Picked up this flat top 1/4 hp 397.19300 yesterday. This was the base model I think - didn't come with a light nor a quench tray (both knockouts are still intact).

This one will probably go up on Eprey - I really don't need another 1/4 hp unit. At $20 though, I couldn't pass it up.

Hello all. "Long time listener, first time caller" :)
There's a 1/2 hp block, model 397.19340 (115V, 1/2" arbor) available about an hours drive from me for $100. Overall great condition and appears to include original pedestal stand but probably missing wheel covers, safety guards & tool rests (typical trouble reaching the seller for confirmation).
That is more $$ (and more grinder) than I was looking at getting for myself (1/3 hp model 397.19580; maybe $40-50), but if somebody was really interested I could be persuaded to help out by picking it up & being the origin point for a GJ Mule Train delivery.
Look forward to hearing from thread 'block-heads'

This isn't at all specific to CM grinders, so help me out:
Stumbled across an upcoming (online) auction to be held at GM/Holden Engine Operations in Port Melbourne, Victoria from 15-19June, 2017 that included dozens of grinders (on bench & pedestal) as well as literally TONS of other heavy-duty shop equipment; also workbenches (many have attached vise/vice or other eqmt), tool cabinets, parts cabinets, storage cabinets - the list made my head spin!

Not sure if its appropriate to post the link to this specific 'event' on the auction site's website; seems a bit too close to advertising? Everyone can try their Google-fu to find it, or I can provide the info if requested via PM (if I'm allowed), or tell me where to post it publicly 'for the good of the GJ'. :dunno:
