And its a big one!
You **** on that one! There is only 1 other that is a higher hp than that one. I say you did pretty good ! Maybe you would even want to swap for my clean 1/3 hp model [emoji2] that way you would not have to worry about a restoration!

Thanks. I was aiming for at least a 3/4 hp, I would have been really happy to find a 1hp but after firing up the 3/4 I'm pretty happy with the amount of power it has.

Nice looking 1/4 hp on Chicago CL. Doesn't appear to have the wheel guards.

That's a "Pre-Block" grinder, and it didn't come with guards. The guards are on the 1/3 and & 1/2 hp models.
Very true! They also don't have holes in the base for mounting which was why I sold mine! Still a great machine but priced a little high in my opinion
Pic is as found. A little dusty, but otherwise complete with light, etc...So I recently counted, and I had 15 grinders from various mfgrs. Decided I needed to get rid rid of most of them, and I've been selling them off little by little. I 've even passed on about 4 block grinders in as many months at various sales. Well, that was until yesterday. I stopped by a local estate sale a few blocks from my house and found this sitting in an extremely clean little workshop in the basement. Not bolted down, just sitting there staring at me. The kid in charge of the basement accepted my $20 offer without hesitation, and the rest is history. What can ya do?Pic is as found. A little dusty, but otherwise complete with light, etc...

Opened yes, but barely. Just took out a couple things to get this picture:

There's a tag on the box showing (barely readable) a price of $174. I estimate this grinder was about a 1980 since it has the four housing bolts and the dark gray/light gray coloring with black background label. Would you guys agree? I'm hesitant to pull it out and look for a date stamp.

Wanna bet its a GJ member tooWow, the 1 HP is up to $580 already.

All,
A couple of weekends ago, I won a 3/4hp block grinder at an auction. Although it was complete, the corner of the cast iron base was broken. Thankfully, the pieces were in the quench cup.
Seeing how popular and rare these grinders are, I decided to braze the pieces back on to the base. Here are some pictures:
1st. Picture: The broken base.
2nd. Picture: Using silver solder on both the outer and inner side, I was able to repair the damage. I'm leaving this as a functional repair. It would be easy to sand down the high spots, fill in the low spots and paint it.
3rd. Picture. The grinder and pedestal.
Cheers
Very nice repair! I hope to find a 3/4 mail box like that !

Picked up this flat top 1/4 hp 397.19300 yesterday. This was the base model I think - didn't come with a light nor a quench tray (both knockouts are still intact).
This one will probably go up on Eprey - I really don't need another 1/4 hp unit. At $20 though, I couldn't pass it up.
Welcome, the original pedestal stand alone is worth the $, IMHOHello all. "Long time listener, first time caller"
There's a 1/2 hp block, model 397.19340 (115V, 1/2" arbor) available about an hours drive from me for $100. Overall great condition and appears to include original pedestal stand but probably missing wheel covers, safety guards & tool rests (typical trouble reaching the seller for confirmation).
That is more $$ (and more grinder) than I was looking at getting for myself (1/3 hp model 397.19580; maybe $40-50), but if somebody was really interested I could be persuaded to help out by picking it up & being the origin point for a GJ Mule Train delivery.
Look forward to hearing from thread 'block-heads'
