lil escape artist lmao

I hate having to tie him up, but when I’m busy, he runs to the creek. And if he runs UP it, I’ll be chasing him for MILES.

So we’re hanging out lol

I’m hoping one day he will stick close, but that nose of his leads him in any and all directions without even a hint of hesitation.

QUESTION FOR THE DOG OWNERS:

Anyone bought paw "shoes" for their dog? How'd they do with them?

I'm asking because we're headed to Lake Mohave next week and it'll be well over 100*. Several years ago I had my avatar lifetime best friend, "Sooner" in Laughlin with us and the aluminum dock was too hot for his paws. I feel bad even thinking of it. I'm guessing Max & Fifi will HATE them but better than them being in pain or burnt. Wondering if they'll just refuse to walk in them or try to chew them off?

Mine have them. They usually do some variation on the Lindy Hop while wearing them. Some of them were successful in getting them off. I had one that just rolled over on her back, game over. I have small dogs, I just scoop n carry over hot surfaces. If I had a large dog, I'd get a runner for them to traverse hot docks n whatnot. If I question the temperature, I take off my shoes. If I can't take it, then I'm pretty sure it's not doing them any good.

Leila - no longer with us - was my pack trained Siberian Husky, quite capable outdoors. She was OK with carrying the pack, once trained, and even looked forward to hiking when she saw her pack come out with mine.

I always carried booties for her, as you sometimes would encounter sharp ice that could build up in her paws, and just had to have something to put on her feet. But she never liked the unsteady footing and would always pull them off.

Bought a set last winter for quite the opposite reason, salted sidewalks and ice buildup between his pads, he just takes it in stride, business as usual. There's a big difference in quality (and cost) and method of securement between brands. They may let you try some on (not on you, the dogs) ;) in the pet store

The booties arrived this afternoon. I didn't see how the bigger dog reacted because I was outside but I put them on the smaller dog, Max the mini terrorist and he let me do it reasonably well. He walked weird as hell in them (expected) and even got up on the sofa with me wearing them but then he tried to chew them off. So I took them off and he's right next to me as I type this. I will only use them while we have to be on pavement loading the ski boat and houseboat. Once underway and when on the beach they won't need them. I just don't want them to be in pain or to actually burn their paws.

I'll call it a very qualified success.....for now. Lol

I like how you "summer"
We do too. Or we used to. Well, at least for one week out of the summer. Then maybe a couple weekends. Haven't done this since the pandemic so we had to have the boat serviced, buy new batteries for it, fix the trailer lights, yada yada.
were they comfortable? :D
Apparently not as he tried chewing them off!

My poor little boy has been in the wars again.

IMG-8909.jpg

He'd been a little off for a few days, but on Saturday morning he was breathing heavy and panting. So, it was off to the vet, although not our normal vet as they no longer offer afterhours/weekend service after being sold out to a chain. Que an x-ray, then into theater with an obstructed/perforated bowel. Dog's are known to eat just about everything, but cockers instead inhale any food they can get their paws on, no matter what might be around said food.

Surgery went well, he woke up from anesthetic better than most I'm told. But there was some concern about his kidneys and gallbladder. The surgery itself was not an insignificant cost, but to deal with the gallbladder would be more than three times that cost, and I'd have to travel to Melbourne for it.

He spent the weekend at the vet. It breaks my heart leaving him alone, likewise not having him follow me around, meeting me at the door, waiting for his afternoon treat, barking at the front door when the neighbor's cat walks through the garden.

We picked him up early afternoon, bright and happy to see us.

In addition to what he should not have ingested, his gallbladder and liver are not great. This could be cancer or in my opinion, the result of a near lifetime on anti-seizure meds. He started having fits at about age 2 or 3, which was horrible to watch. Initially, the meds did nothing, but after changes, he has not had one in the last 5 years. That's not the focus at the moment though, its about making him comfortable and happy and we'll deal with what comes later.

He's an incredibly lucky dog, not everyone could sustain such ongoing medical bills, let alone two major surgeries in the last 4 years. I do wonder if I would ever put myself through such heartache again with another dog, but then I realise how much love and friendship they bring. I don't have children, but I do have a dog that depends on me, and surprisingly, that I depend on too.

My girlfriend gave him a tug o war rope a few weeks ago, and it’s his favorite toy. But he’s already chewed damn near through it. I think this pup is part velociraptor IMG_4431.jpeg
Let's try that again. Please be careful with that kind of "stringy" chew toys. Dogs can ingest the threads which may cause stomach - bowel obstructions, bloat, or torsion. Need to start to trimming nails. Just a heads up. Beagle = energy bomb. Cute Pup.
