Ever since his solo "adventure" five years ago, I don't trust letting him off the lead, even with supervision at home with the garage door open. He is constantly chasing the next scent, to the point where he pays no attention to what's going on around him. Even when on walks, he is often unaware of other dogs and has no interest in socializing (like father, like son). So, letting him loose at a fenced off-leash dog park for the first time was still an anxious moment for me.

Watch the socks. My daughter was telling me last Saturday they had an emerg obstruction surgery, a sock. 2nd surgery in under 2 yrs on this dog, both times, a sock. About $3500 a pop.
My German Shorthair would always grab one of my socks when I took them off to go to bed. She would carry it to her bed before she went to sleep. She never chewed it, and it would be retrieved in the morning and put into the hamper. My only guess was that she felt secure with my scent next to her while asleep. She was one of our most problematic dogs because she wouldn't come when called. Her playmates were a Weimeraner and a retired Greyhound who tolerated her as a puppy and was her best friend when she grew up.

My "mini-terrorist" Max, grabs a sneaker whenever I leave. He carries it into the living room but sometimes if I kick my shoes off watching tv and leave them in the living room when I go to bed. Later he'll go pick one up and carry it back to the bedroom! Get this: He's a super short with 3" legs but he manages to jump onto a chair and from there onto the bed with the sneaker in his mouth! He LOVES having it.

Like you say, I think he does it for my scent. I'm at least his 3rd owner (that I know of) and though he is a cute little ****** I don't think he was ever given affection like a lap dog would usually have. My girlfriend and I dote on him, stroke his fur, talk to him, etc and he LOVES it.

Man, I think our Arkansaw shop dogs are a little different from many GJ garage dogs.
Shop dog is a shop dog. I've got two little ones that fear nothing. They hang out when I run power tools. Ride with me on the tractor. Ride in the Dingo bucket. It ain't the size or the haircut, it's the heart. Neighbor's big dog is afraid of its own farts.

My little boy had a vet checkup yesterday, which left me $630 lighter after blood tests for his anti-seizure meds.

But...................as soon as we walked in the door till the moment we left, he had entire room besotted and became the centre of attention for the staff and those in the waiting room. He may be an old man now, but he still looks as adorable as the day we met.

Such a dignified handsome gentleman he's matured into. Crazy cute as a baby dog.

.....While I missed her, I think she got along fine without me...
UGH^^^ This line kinda kills me.
We have a long vacation upcoming and will be gone for almost 20 days. We will have a house sitter/dog sitter but my pups will think they've been abandoned and I truly HATE leaving them. They are rescues; Max at least twice if not more so they don't "KNOW" they've not been given away or abandoned.

My dogs have always yelled at me, or given me the cold shoulder after a vacation. I always feel bad about leaving them.

When we leave town, our dogs stay at a kennel. We found out about it from a friend who works there. Knowing this lady, who we know loves & rescues dogs, made us much more comfortable. You have some options as to how they will spend their time there. Since our dogs like to play rough we choose to have them play with each other instead of in the big group.

Astrid & Fozzie are alway excited to "go on vacation" at this place. Foz likes it so much I'm not sure if he wants to come home afterward.

Such great puppers, one and all. I haven't seen many Norwegian Elkhounds in quite awhile. I had three in succession in the distant past. Great dogs, but aren't they all?!

My wife and I have always had dogs during our 48 years of marriage. They were all good, but a few stand out as exceptional.
Our last dog was a purebred German Shepherd. She was such an outstanding dog that I didn't think anything could replace her in my heart. I worked with her a lot. She was smart and receptive to training.

At this stage in our lives, we decided to go dogless for the first time. It was good at first; Complete freedom to come and go for as long as we wished, no feeding times or food bills, no vet expenses, and no boarding fees when we were on vacation. But there was an obvious hole in our lives.

We started watching Dog Rescue videos on YouTube and donated to our local no-kill shelter. They asked if we would foster in our home to ease their overload. We initially resisted bringing a needy dog into our lives, becoming attached and then giving him away to his forever home.

One day, about a month ago, the shelter posted a 3-year-old male Border Collie who was an owner surrender. No back story provided. They would say he's very active and doesn't like being alone.

I talked to my wife and a few of our friends. They told me I was crazy to get a Border Collie at my age. Friends said to think about the freedom you have without a dog.

All I knew was that I was lonely being home alone all day with my wife at work, and this Broder Collie wasn't doing well being caged in a shelter. We went to the shelter with thoughts of fostering him. We were told he was healthy, fixed, and current on shots. We decided to give fostering a try. The first duration was two days, and if things went well, we could do two-week intervals. His name was Rocky, and he was very sweet. It took 2 hours at home with Rocky to know he was not going anywhere. We all bonded quickly. We went to the shelter after 2 days and signed the adoption papers. Rocky was ours.

His story will continue here if there's interest. He has me walking for hours a day. He is very receptive to training, and I'm working with him every day. Some things just work out.

Meet Rocky.

I really like elkhounds. Astrid is our second. The first was almost 40 years ago, & I had been looking for another ever since.

The first was quite a swimmer. Astrid isn't quite sure yet, but here she is testing the water.

She is one of our most talkative dogs ever. Not barking, but more of a conversational tone. Almost scooby doo speak. Ruh roh. And she watches tv. No telling what is going to catch her eye. She does like elephants.

Yup, I can relate. We had an across the street neighbor whose Elkhound had puppies and they were going to put down the runt of the litter. This was late 70's. We took her instead and she was a good though very small doggy. In those days we had to go to the dog pound to license her and while there we found they had a very large male Elkhound someone had lost while on vacation from somewhere very cold (vet claimed) He was great but came down with something after a year and we lost him. Such great dogs and yes, mine did the run-roh's too.

Mine go insane jumping up, etc.

Because we have a pool and Max fell into it ONCE - he could NOT get out. My girlfriend just happened to be outside and saw him. So I’m pretty concerned at the possibility of him doing it while we’re gone. I found a DIY pool ramp for dogs on YouTube I’ll be making. Basically a long thick rubber mat with places for his claws to grab, zip tied to multiple pool noodles and secured with rope to something immovable. I’d be inconsolable if he drowned. Ugh, can’t even think of it.

I teach mine to swim, and where to get out. They seem to get it. I even had one that would jump off the diving board, climb the ladder and do it again. Sometimes 5 or 6 times in a row.

Oh he knows how to swim. But when he did fall in, he fell into the deep end and stayed over there trying to figure out a way for his 3" long legs to reach up to the deck - impossible. Even if he could have reached it he weighs 20 lbs and soaking wet I'm sure a lot more. He'd have drowned I am sure. He needs the ramp.

Roxi had to spend a few hours in the car last night, while we were at my kids league championship track meet(no pets allowed). She did get out to run around a few times.

FWIW, my son placed 5th in the 800 with a time of 1:58.78. Won't know for a day or two if qualifies for district 1-2 championship. I'm very proud of him for the hard work he's put into this season.
