Here are my two watch dogs. The lab is my daughter’s, but he stays with us while she is at work. The lab and my shepherd get along very nicely.
Both are rescues and both have their own stories.
The lab was seized from his owner by local authorities. Both of his ears had cuts like someone took scissors and cut right up the middle. Both ears are missing fur off the back and his head has life-long scars. He came with heart worms and every parasite know to dogs. Fortunately, he has made a full recovery and is a great dog. Well, he does not like too many neighborhood dogs.
My shepherd had four other homes until I got her. Most of the homes were housing her until a forever home could be found. For me this would be shepherd number seven, my first female and first rescue. She was wonderful on the meeting day and perhaps one more day after that. After that, well let’s say, the neighbors named her Cujo, and rightly so. She wanted to bite people and fight with every dog. For being 17 months old she was very spirited. My work was cut out for me. Before I could work on training, she was extremely hungry and began losing weight.. Went to various vets, including specialist. Her weight went from 60 pounds (small shepherd) to 30 pounds. This was occurring even after increasing her food to six cups, which doubled her recommended daily amount. It took awhile, long while, to find out she had EPI. She was not processing any food. Once on medication, everything turned back into a normal healthy dog. I was able to socialize her and fully train her on and off leash. She now loves other dogs and people.
This is the most expensive free dog I ever had.
