This is Kaya. She's a Border Collie/Aussie mix. Smarter than I am, and definitely the one in charge. Since I don't have a herd of sheep for her to manage, she makes do herding us. But she loves chillin' in the garage as much as I do, and seems frustrated that she's not allowed out there now since there are renovations in progress.

Drives, I know you're not asking for unsolicited advice but here goes: I have been heartbroken for all my dogs but especially for Sooner, the big blonde Lab in my avatar. I had 3 other small dogs when he passed away almost 5 years ago and 2 of them have passed since. I miss them all but for some reason his passing hit me hard and I still "talk to him" daily.

I'd suggest you get another dog asap if it's the grief that has kept you until now. You will never stop grieving him if you are at all like I am (a total emotional slob for my animals). But Sooner's passing has taught me to truly enjoy them every moment you have your pets. Mine almost don't qualify for that word. I nearly treat mine as small, voiceless people. Hope you find another great one soon.

Dan: thanks for taking the time to make that thoughtful post, but we don't own a dog at the moment cause we choose not to. We still miss Taffy our mutt golden lab that came to us as a 6 month old and lived here 13 awesome years until she passed.

we also had another huge dog (165 pound mix) that left to be on a farm after a few years here because our small unfenced yard was just too small for Simba who would catch frisbees out of the air.

we've also had maybe 4 or 5 tortoise shell calico cats and our most recent one is 9 that we rescued about 4.5 years ago.

we take care of our daughter and son in law's dog ZEKE about 2 months a year while they are out of the country on business and without a fenced yard and being in the city it's not always easy. (pic of ZEKE with a couple of his chew toys)

I am building a fence so maybe we'll have a dog again, but we also like to travel and we'd have to arrange doggie day care if we had a dog.

speaking of that what do some of you do when you want to leave town for a week or more with your pups? house sitters, kennels, doggie day care or ?

One of the reasons we bought a camper was to take the dog, he's at the door waiting to go, he knows when the camper is hooked. Since ours kids are grown & starting their lives he has filled that void, I can't even go to HD without him, though he waits in the truck. We even bought a convertible as a compromise to not taking the bikes so he could come & we could at least have the top down.

My wife & I both feel that if we have a dog we're not leaving him or her out of the fun, he even goes off roading in the s x s, out in the boat, hiking, he's part of our adventure.

I can relate^^^.
My girlfriend's son is going to school full time and working full time and has our 6 year old granddaughter several days of the week too. His dog, Oly was being left alone constantly with just the back screen door open to go outside to do his business. Oly has known us since he was a puppy and is a gentle giant. We've brought him to live with us and he seems to be doing fine. He's got lump tumors all over and sleeps most of the day - he's 100 lbs and now 12 years old. But we're glad to make him happy and give him the attention and affection he craves.

If it's one of our RV trips, Joey the poodle goes along with us. Even when we had Joey's sister, Sugar, my avatar dog Sooner and our little Corgi mix, Bella they all went along. Yeah, a bit of a pack but they relied on us and were good about going along. When we go on trips where we fly we have relatives come stay at our house to care for just Oly & Joey now.

She's still in her puppy phase (not quite 2yrs old, yet), and I do have to be careful not to leave tools and removed bolts or parts where she can grab them off the floor, as she likes to dash off with them so that I chase her and she can "play" :)

Beautiful pup. Guess she's just about got you trained. My lab likes to hide tennis balls under stuff and whine until I fetch it and throw if for him. I know my place and function in his life.

great ideas about RV ing and CAMPING with the pups, but my bride's idea of camping is a new hotel without room service so I need other ideas on how to travel and still have a dog when we are at home?

i'm guessing swapping with neighbors who have dogs is one idea?

any great DOGGIE DAYCARE places or people in that business who you'd trust with your best friend?

As far as the traveling etc; we have a sitter from Rover app come. I'm currently deployed and my wife works full time so our sitter comes noonish to let the dogs out for an hour or so.
When we do travel together we have her stay at the house daily/ overnight; less stress on dogs that way and I don't want to worry about boarding etc. Supposedly all the people on rover are vetted/ insured and bonded; we have had few issues but if you take the time to "meet and greet" before extended travel it helps with everyone's stress and trust levels.
Rover is like care.com for pets. not affiliated in any way, just we have had good experiences with them. Also each "sitter" sets their own price I believe and everything is negotiated and paid for through the App..

I posted Piper a while back but here she is for a refresher. She's not much of a garage girl but hung out for a bit when I took this picture. The rest are Tango, he's my little car guy. He will ask permission to get into the car while I'm in the garage and just mills around waiting for me to finish it so he can go for a ride.

Ugh, give Piper and Tango an extra hug for me.

I had a little girl Corgi mix named Bella. She was an odd looking little thing but the sweetest most gentle dog ever. She passed away in her sleep on my birthday last year. Breaks my heart to think of her even now.

Here's our Missy Bella. She wore a necklace instead of a collar because her neck was bigger than her head. Collars fell right off. Rest in Paradise my sweet little girl.

thanks guys for the tips on traveling or having your pet (dogs in this case) taken care of while we travel.

we already have friends (and good neighbors) watch our cat when we leave for a few days and this cat we have now has about a 2 block radius of friendly neighbors to just stay with if she wants to. I bet she wouldn't know we were gone for a week or two.

we don't RV or camp so taking a dog with us would be a challenge to hotels, but I have seen some people travel that way with theirs so I'll look into that.

i'm guessing there isn't a nationwide awesome dog care biz with 5 star ratings?

keep posting up your dog pics cause even though I don't have one at the moment I sure like them.

cheers

Here is a pic of my male German Shepherd Otis who is 12 weeks old. He is 75% East German (DDR) lines and 25% Czech. The East German lines are known for their large bone structure and defense drive. He is a little boss for sure. Paul

My first garage dog Tank, got him after I graduated from college 14+ years ago. He stayed with my parents when I moved out because he was bonded with their golden retriever. They just had to put him down yesterday, had a large mass on his kidney, wasn't eating, was in pain. Miss him already.

Bella looked like sweety, no doubt she's missed. That's the hardest part with pets, they go way before we're ready to say goodbye.

I'll give them both a big squeeze tonight in your honor!

Thanks! Yup, I miss every dog I've ever had, though I admit some a bit more than others.

My garage pal, Momo.

100lbs of handsome white German Shepherd. He is very hard to keep clean after he spends time with me in the garage.

Here's our Brittany named Jessie.

She's only a momentary garage dog when the garage door is down. If the garage door is open she will spend all day in the garage with me. But, if I have the door closed and the kids are inside she will come to check on me occasionally. Other than the brief safety checks she spends my garage time in the recliner.

It used to be MY recliner before Jessie came home with us. I probably owe Jessie a big thanks because I’m pretty sure if Jessie had not claimed the recliner as her own I would have come home one day to discover my wife gave away the recliner. She hates it, but won’t take Jessie’s chair from her. :willy_nil

This is Hans the wiener dog. He's 7 years and 11lbs with a dynamic personality. He's my shop buddy and is very good at chasing out the yard critters.
He is by far the best thing I've ever gotten off craigslist. (rescue dog)

Here is Bentley, a rather rare English Shepherd. Couldn't imagine a better, smarter, calmer 9 month old puppy. At 52 pounds, will probably not exceed 60. Sort of looks like a cross between a wolf and a Holstein cow... Excellent at frisbee as well. :)

Hans is a GREAT looking little guy. LOVE the long haired dachshunds and don't see them all that much. (I'm sure he'd resent being called "little") In my experience, Dachshunds, like Corgis are little in height only. They mostly function as full size dogs if at all possible! Give him a belly rub for me.
